  1. Katie,

I'm having this same problem with VW 12.5. I'm using Windows XP Pro with 1Gb of ram and ATI graphics. Not on a network. I'm working with relatively small files - 4 to 18 Mb, and I'm not trying any complex rendering or lighting.

After VW has been runing for a while it gets slower and slower. Opening the task manager shows the memory commit charge getting very large. As it approaches the total available ram, the hardrive runs longer until the program either hangs or crashes. I've also noticed that if I manage to close the file before it crashes, task manger still show VW processor usage hovering around 30% - just sitting idle with no files open.

This problem occurs whether I'm running other applications or not. There is no particular function or sequence of operations that causes it. Just the fact that VW has been running for awhile. How long depends on file size. This is very similar to a memory leak problem that I had with another progam several years ago.

I see that the last post to this thread was in October. Is there a solution yet? The original post for this thread was from a VW 2008 user, but I hope you are able to fix the problem for 12.5 also. I never had this issue with previous versions.

  2. I'm having trouble aligning the working plane to an object. I'm using the "set working plane" tool in the 3D modeling tool set, and I selected the planar face mode. The cursor changes to an arrow with a rectangle when I hover over an object, but nothing happens when I click on it.

Does this method only work with certain types of objects? Maybe not with groups or symbols? Is there any other way to accomplish this - maybe with 3D loci?

  3. Hi everybody,

I've been reading the posts on the solid modeling forum to learn some 3D modeling techniques to build architectural models.

I've tried the method Islandmon posted on another thread - extrude a polygon along a path, and save as a symbol. I've also used the extrude command from the "model" menu. Both techniqes have given me the shape I wanted, but placing them accurately in 3D space has been difficult.

I can use the 3D move command to place an object if I know or can calculate the correct coordinates. But I can't get one object to snap to another in a 3D view. I've tried placing 3D loci at the corners of the symbols I've created (tried both hybrid and 3D symbols), but still no reliable snaps. They appear to snap to loci, but after rotating you can see that the objects are not actually touching.

So, is there a way to snap to objects in 3D? If not, is there at least a way to restrict movement to one direction at a time to help place objects manually?

  4. I was also having this problem. Couldn't select or snap to objects on another layer even though layer and class options were set to show/snap/modify others and the current view was "top/plan" with layer views aligned.

The problem was layers set to different scales. Set all layers to the same scale, and use viewports to get the scale you need for printing.
