I was under the impression that one of the huge benefits announced during the VectorFest tour to promote VW2008, was that when using DLVP (design layer viewport) referencing, one no longer had to clean up the classes in consultant files, because they were not supposed to get 'imported' during a mere DLVP referencing process. Unfortunately, I have not found this to be true.... all the consultant classes are still importing. Am I doing something wrong? Or was this feature not programmed into VW2008 afterall?

It appears the root of the problem seems to have been caused by a 'circularly referenced SYMBOL'. Now that that symbol has been deleted and all files in the project have been purged, the program is no longer crashing, at least for now.

Islandmon, you seemed to be on the right track with your initial comment, but in the end it was not a circularly referenced file (using DLVP), but rather that one symbol. Now that that symbol has been deleted and all files in the project have been purged, my largest file size is 1.5MB and the program is no longer crashing a dozen times a day. So, my advice, certainly use referenced symbols, but don't let any loops develop.

VW2008 is crashing on me EVERY single time when I try to do a 'true' reference (view port design layer reference). Does anyone have any suggestions what might be causing this? And more importantly any suggestions on what might fix this? Thanks in advance!!!!

Patrick, at the bottom right of your window a little bar appears that first says 'Reading File' and then switches to 'Verifying File'.

In an effort to try and track down why all my file sizes on a project just exploded, I am trying to pin-point the potential problem: Typically all of our project files use referenced symbols, i.e. we have a file in which all symbols for the project get drawn and made into symbols and then each and every file in the project uses these symbols via reference symbols. This seemed to be working great until this afternoon, when all files which used to be around 1MB grew to around 8MB. I have now set up one test file in the project, which does not use any reference symbols and it has stayed at apx. 900KB. What experience are others having with referenced symbols? And if you are not using referenced symbols how do you work with symbols?

In trying to 'save' a file, which kept causing VW to crash, I decided to reference said file into a blank document and then to delete the reference, but asking for the objects to be 'imported into current document'. This caused apx. 3000 design layers to develop (whereas there used to only be one) and each class to duplicate anywhere from 10 to 20 times. What could be causing this? I tried this again with a much simpler file and it only added one additional design layer and half a dozen classes, but why would this be happening at all?

Typically I set up a Template file, off of which all project files get created. In VW2008, the template file extension .sta was causing said file to open in Photoshop CS3 rather than in VW. Thus I have simply created a regular .vwx file, which merely has the project classes, the title block and a sample viewport in it. Now, all of a sudden, when I do a 'Save As' on this file (without adding any references or any other data), it all of a sudden jumps from a 208KB file size to a 7MB file size. What could be causing this?

My understanding per the thread to a previous of my questions, one could do the circular referencing once one had installed SP2. (I copied the reply from that post, since I didn't know how to create a direct link to it). Re: Work Flow Question - Design Layer References Prior to VW2008 SP2, you could not have circular file references - you will get a message stating: 'The selected file cannot be referenced, because that would cause a cycle of design layer viewport style references'. In VW2008 SP2, you can now have circular file references. However, you cannot have circular data references; if this happens, you will get a message notifying you of circular data. Having said this, I am not sure that the setup you described above is circular. Furthermore, all this applies to DLVPs.

All of a sudden all our files are starting to have large file sizes... they used to be around 1MB each, now they are all of a sudden around 8MB (sure we have added some information, but certainly not 8-fold). This may, or may not be the root of the problem, but now the 'File Verification' process during the opening of the files is taking around 3-5 minutes. And after all that it crashes VW (I'll include the crash report below). The only other change I noticed prior to every file, which has references going both ways (e.g. Plan has Structural Grid file referenced in and Structural Grid file has Plan files referenced in), crashing is that upon opening it was telling me that Reference Links would have to be broken, but they appeared to be file upon opening the file. HELP, I have a project deadline on January 2nd and can't open 3/4 of the project files. This is a nightmare!!! When using the Grid Bubble Tool (from the Tool Set Menu > Dims / Notes), I like the idea of the Starting Marker, however, can one also add grid lines such as 1.4 into the line of column line makers? Or should I be adding this to the wish list? What have I successfully been able to label: A, B, C, D 1, 2, 3, 4 1.1 ,1.2, 1.3, 1.4 What have I not been able to do when labeling column lines: A, B, B.3, B.7, C 1, 2, 3, 4, 4.4, 5, 5.3 Also, interesting to note, that when one for instance sets the starting marker as A.2 then all the column lines are labeled with A.2 So how are people labeling the non-major grid lines?

I am wondering if there is a setting I am not aware of, which would cause the TRUE references to also export to the dwg's? Right now these simply do not show up in the dwg files, which makes effective consultant file exchanges impossible.

Back when using import referencing (in 12.5), I used to have a file for the structural grid and separate files each floor plan. To check alignment I had all floor plans referenced into the structural file and the respective floor plans above and below each 'active' floor referenced into the plans. Now using Design Layer True Referencing (in VW 2008). I am, for instance, only able to reference my structural grid file into each floor plan, but then not able to reference any of said plans into the structural grid file, because I get the following error message: 'The selected file cannot be referenced, because that would cause a cycle of design layer viewport style references'. How are people approaching this issue from a Work Flow point of view??

If you are using Design Layer Viewport Referencing you can check the 'Black & White Only' box under the Advanced Properties in the Object Info box.

One of my colleagues found the answer: Under Tools > Organization > Viewports go to the Design Layer Viewport (the one that has the reference file in it) and select Edit. Then select Classes and change the Fourth column in this window from 'Use Viewport specific class definitions' to 'Use document class definition' (it's an icon that either has a picture with corners or the VectorWorks logo on a sheet of paper). Now everything will be in color in the Design Layer, but the class overrides in the Sheet Layer Viewports will apply to all the layers, referenced and active.
