  1. When I double click an elevation or a section, to add or edit annotations in a Sheet Layer Viewport, the 2d projection of the model, typically rendered in hidden line, reverts back to wireframe. This makes it especially hard when I am annotating the drawings, or adding hatch or other details to the drawing.

It must be a setting that I changed, because this is a recent issue although I do not think it is associated with SP2.

Any clue as to what setting I may have changed?

    Thanks,

  2. Bug not fixed in VW2011 SP2.

I'm losing time because of this bug. All the efficiency of using keynotes is wasted away in reformatting the keynote legend after each edit.

  3. I'm using callouts as keynotes and experiencing strange behavior when editing or adding keynotes.

Each time I exit the notes manager after editing a keynote, or when I add a new keynote callout, the keynote legend reformats itself. It seems to be editing the note text indent and I have to re-edit the legend formatting each time.

Anyone else experience this in VW2011, it didn't happen in VW2010.

    Thanks,

  4. Well said Shaun. I agree we have to keep pushing NV to improve VW. I've been using VW as a flat cad program for a few years now, but with the recent downturn in the economy, I chose this slow period to exploit VW to its fullest. I'm on my third full 3D project, and think I'm ready to begin a wish list.

The 3D interface and especially the 3D perspective interface are not as fluid as they should be in this age. Design should be fun, I get excited about seeing my projects in 3D and the software should be just as exciting so we can truly use VW as a tool for design and documentation and presentation. VW has so much going for it, we just want it to be even better, even more intuitive, even easier, perhaps simpler and at the same time more powerful.

Some particularly poor features of VW are the re-rendering of a 3D view just because of simple modifications. This is really not inspiring to my design workflow and hampers my initiative to make iterative revisions. And I'm just talking about simple render modes, hidden line, polygon, and opengl. I want to view a live simply rendered model in perspective while I work on it, and I want to be able to make changes to that model without having to wait to re-render the model. Also Updating sheet layer viewports is also antiquated. There has to be a better way for VW to achieve what we see so many other programs doing. We have faith in VW because it has so much potential, and if they have to drop some legacy features to streamline and improve the product, I'd rather they do that, than fall farther behind.

  5. At the recent Texas Society of Architects convention, I visited the Archicad booth to get an introduction to their product. I'm not thinking of switching, but I like to stay current. I was impressed with their demo, and their verbal description of BIM Server, although that wasn't part of the demo.

They gave me a trial disc, and I installed it to get a feel for the program.

I've experimented with Archicad twice before this, none of which is truly relevant, but I'll point out that I was able to tryout Archicad in undergrad school in the mid 90's, and also in grad school in the late 90's.

It's always seemed easier to me to draw in Vectorworks, and this time its still the same. The VW interface seems streamlined and more polished, and the icons are both more meaningful and more aesthetically pleasing.

I realize I use Vectorworks day in and day out, so obviously Archicad is going to feel less intuitive, but that's not what I was expecting. I was expecting it to be more intuitive. Although getting Archicad into a 3d perspective view is certainly more intuitive that Vectorworks.

I was wondering if anyone else would comment on the intuitive nature of Vectorworks vs Archicad.

    Thanks,

  6. Peter and bc,

    Thanks for the tips.

    Here's how I'm approaching this.

On my foundation layer, I'm drawing foundation walls that are just stone, no framing, but match my floor plan wall geometry above, and fitting the bottom to the 3d topo. Now, I'm going to try to reconfigure the 3d topo to show 1ft contours, so that the wall is not stepping down so abruptly.

    Thanks,

  7. I'm working on a residential project on a sloped site.

I've built a 3d model, and am using it to project my plans, elevations, building sections, and interior elevations. Its going pretty well for my first 3d model in vw.

I want my exterior stone walls to step down the sloped site, but haven't found an elegant way to do this yet. The finish floor elevations stays constant, I just want the stone ledge to drop down the foundation wall. Any tips would be appreciated.

I do have a survey with 2' 3D countours modeled but the building model and the site model are still independent.

    Thanks,
