  1. heres a screenshot to illustrate I've run through my class/ layer visibilities + lineweights but it seems a bit erratic to be one of them. The L.H. pic is a wireframe VP 'created' from the section, the R.H. is a duplicate VP with section style class turned off. sorry for pic quality - the forum doesn't seem to like PDFs so it pixellated in photoshop, but I think you can see the missing lines.
  2. the only problem I'm finding is that in my 1:100 section I have the section style set to fill the cut line black. If I switch the section style class to not-visible in the (duplicate) viewports that contain my new 1:10 details, I'm losing a lot of lines (odd edges of shingles/ battens/ wall layers etc). Any ideas?
  3. That does it for me! Thanks a lot its a great help.
  4. thanks for the speedy reply...I was doing something like this earlier today but realised (if I've understood you right) that this makes a copy of that viewport as a snapshot in time, so can only be done at the end of the process. I really want some dynamic details that I can set up now and start annotating whilst I'm still working on the master model thats continually feeding into my section viewports...updating the details right up until I hit the printer. I have managed to draw a (15mm, because ultimately I want a 1:10 in a 150mm sq) box on my (1/100) section viewport/ sheet layer, then create a viewport. If I keep the scale at 1/100 in this dialogue box it gives me a tiny wee detail on my specified sheet layer. I can then change the detail to 1/10 and it all looks good in wireframe, but as soon as I go to hidden line, it becomes clear that it hasn't cropped the section - rather its cropped the view (right view) that you'd have if you were looking at the end wall rather than the section. I guess I could use the wireframe to set up the page layout and get my annotations in then use your method to copy a bit of the final section over as a final job. But I'm sure there must be a dynamic-details-from-section-viewport trick in here somewhere ?!
  5. Is it possible to create dynamic 1:10 details from the section viewports I am assembling on my sheet layers? If I draw a box over an area of a sheet layer, then go to 'create viewport', it doesn't like it ..'you have selected only one object or an already cropped viewport'. If i draw the box then also select the section viewport I want to crop for use on another viewsheet, it brings up the dialoge box for create viewport and transports me to the viewsheet I nominate, but the port is empty?! I've got all layers/ classes turned on and have updated a few times. I'm guessing I'm missing something here... if this is roughly the right way...i'm slightly confused by the scale in create viewport box - if my section viewport is 1:100 and I want a detail at 1:10, would I go for 1:10, or 5x? There is a box for 'view'- I just want to replicate the existing but bigger, but am faced with top/plan, right, left etc. Maybe this is a hint I'm in the wrong place... or if my section viewport faces right, should I put 'right'..? I'd like to leave the boundary box for my crop in place on the original viewsheet to locate the detail - is this possible? I've hunted round help/ the forum/ knowledgebase/ my books and cant find the answers! any pointers gratefully received...
  6. as t threads seem to have converged to the same topic, can we shift this discussion to the thread 'wall tool - basics' thankyouuu!
  7. Ace! thanks for that - the original drawing file should be attached now, and a Jpeg of the screenshot (the file manager spat the PDF back at me). The internal walls should be 2x 15mm ply outer layers, the ext walls should be (from the outside) 2x25mm, 15mm, 200mm, 15mm. The 2 threads is definately a bad Idea - I'm not sure how it happened. I'll post a msg on the other referring any more discussion to this one as they're now the same issue. thanks
  8. selection issue resolved by force select, but I don't know what happened. Wall layers still troubling me.
  9. on the selection issue - force select seems to have sorted me, but I'm none the wiser as to what happened.
  10. I thought it might be like a shortcut where you usually hit 'browse' then navigate to the file. As far as I can make out I can only post a picture if I have a web page (I dont) - the FAQ suggests you can post a file at the reply-preview stage if using mozilla 4+, I'm using firefox 5 and the attachment option didn't appear. So thats me stuffed for posting files?!
  11. It is the drawing they're not showing up in... heres a screenshot of the situation - the interior walls should have 15mm ply either side - rather than one only, and the exterior walls should have 15mm (you can see the gap) ply then 2x25mm (one only shows). All class visibilities are on, and anyway, all the wall layers are in the same class as they were drawn at the same time. Where are my wall layers? Has someone stolen them? a side issue - on opening the drawing this morning I can't seem to select anything - if I select all, the object info tells me theres 69 objects, and theres a few joists off to the side, on the same layer that I can select, but my current drawing - walls, symbols etc - none of it will select...any Ideas? Am I being really dim? I have tried select all - unlock and its not that. Yesterday I could double click on a door and edit it - not today. help! (F1 doesn't offer me much here, or I dont know what search term to use!) Actually it seems as I dont have a webpage I cant post an image - I will try and email a file to the address on your linked page, or can you give me a better address. It says in the FAQ that if using Mozilla 4+ you can add a file at the preview stage of replying, but I am using version 5 and couldn't see the option.
  12. heres a screenshot of the situation (hopefully - how do you find the url of a document on a mac?) - the interior walls should have 15mm ply either side - rather than one only, and the exterior walls should have 15mm (you can see the gap) ply then 2x25mm (one only shows). All class visibilities are on, and anyway, all the wall layers are in the same class as they were drawn at the same time. Where are my wall layers? 13. thanks - I'm sure its all in a book somewhere, but I'm a poor wee student and my VW book spend is already about ?100, on top of the programme. I have the Resolve Architect training workbook for v12 (which doesn't have an index!), and a quickstart guide to 10.5. My book budget is pretty well spent up. Anyone moved on to VW2008 want to part with any books for v12?
  14. Is there a feature, like in illustrator etc. (I think its apple D there?) to repeat the previous action? I've modelled some joists individually and want to repeat the action of duplicating and moving by 600mm (cmd+alt+shift then drag by 600). This is really useful in illustrator I assume its possible with VW?
  15. wall layer display issues - have (not) attached my drawing if anyon has time for a look. As far as I can work out, I have created 2 new wall styles - Longshaw internal and Longshaw Larch Studs. They should have 3 layers and 5 layers (or components) respectively. But in the drawing I can only see 2-3. Exporting as a PDF (after knocking most line weights down to 0.05) suggests the rest aren't there..any ideas where they are + how I can make them show? actually I can't seem to attach a file, will happily email to anyone whos up for it...
  16. ace, just the ticket - I was looking for that option at the door creation stage, rather than going back to edit. Thanks. Now - any idea why only a few of the wall layers display at one time? theres always a bit of ply or suchlike missing from the onscreen preview - I know its there because I can snap to it, but I cant see it which irritates me, partiularly at junctions...
  17. anyone help me to cut a doorway in a hole, without putting a door in in? I have an internal wall that goes up to meet the pitched roof, and wants a walkway of 1200mm x 2100mm cutting through /removing from it. I can't find any reference in the help, or in my book, though I'm sure it must be basic stuff!
  18. can I come back to the point but the screen view shows the 2x25mm as a 50mm layer, then a 215 mm layer, then a 15 mm, as if it can only preview a max of three layers. Is there a way to get the view to accurately show the layers? this seems the same on my internal walls with only three layers - it only shows me 2 on screen, but the other one can be snapped to. Can I up the screen view quality or anything?
  19. actually I'm drawing up an existing building for a student project - a structural case study - the building is quite innovative in its use of timber so its really important all the members are in the right place. Our cheerful building contractors actually managed to construct it like this too (apparently!).! It seems unlikely I can 'build' a model as it is so I am making traditional 2d plans and sections with extensive use of the double line tool! don't know about the US building regs, but Rural Studio seem to have the sort of fun with building that suggests there aren't many! the french don't seem to worry about insulation too much either!
  20. also... the symbol for a wall stud (rectangle with diaganol cross) doesn't seem to want to snap to a reference grid - in fact it seems very determined not to! - any ideas?
  21. I am trying to set up a drawing of a stud walled timber building, I have made a new wall style - 25mm cladding, 25mm battens,15mm ply 200mm gap for studs + insulation, 15mm ply... but the screen view shows the 2x25mm as a 50mm layer, then a 215 mm layer, then a 15 mm, as if it can only preview a max of three layers. Is there a way to get the view to accurately show the layers? I've created a 2dsymbol of my studs and now want to insert within the 200mm gap - these are mostly doubled up, but are single at the corners. Is the symbol route the best way or should I try and incorporate within the wall style? likewise, creating a pattern/ hatch for my insulation - UK style that is! Should I make it part of the wall style, or try and draw it over the top? thanks for any help on this..
  22. ace - its starting to make sense. Its a lot to get me head around! book is due for delivery thurs-fri, have a slim guide to VW 10.5 at the moment thats a bit short on info! any good online help to recommend? a lot of it seems either super-basic, or ultra complex... cheers again for the help its really sorted a couple of problems for me
  23. thanks, that makes sense, but how do you annotate a viewport? If I 'activate viewport' Im still working on the sheet layer and have the same problem - my viewports have the right scale - if only I could get 'in' there!
