  1. Yes, it IS, and always has been. And I happen to need it, along with all of the other symbols in my library. Multiple restarts do not solve the problem. What gives?? VW/Designer/Renderworks 2008 SP2, Windows XP, 933 MHZ Pentium IV
  2. LOL, should have mentioned that -- I'm in Designer 2008, recently installed, on a Windows NT system.
  3. I've turned the "log time in program" feature on in the preferences menu, but I can't seem to locate the log file. My employer and I use this to help bill our clients, so it's kind of important! Thanks Jeff
  4. I've had the same problem, but I'm on a 933 Mhz Pentium III/512 Mb ram runnming Win 2000 professional. What's even more disturbing is that even on relatively small 2d drawings (less than 2mb) I'm having to wait 10 seconds for edit handles to appear after selecting objects, 10 seconds for objects to appear where I've moved them... I upgraded from 8.5.2, and never had these problems before. I'm about ready to uninstall it and send it back.
  5. Woodhead -- Sounds like we have the same job. Mind if I ask who you work for? As for your question, it's a fairly easy process to convert to 3D. Most any 2D object can be extruded by selecting the object and sipmly: CNTRL+SHIFT+E. You will then be asked to enter a Z height value. symbols can be extruded in the same fashion in the Organize-Edit Symbol pull down menu. Hope this helps.
  6. I running 8.5.2 on a 1Ghz PIII/Win 2000 machine with 512Mb ram, and I just bought Acrobat 5.0. I've been trying to save various 2D Vectorworks drawings as .PDF files (using Acrobat Distiller) and it's taking FOREVER. The last one took an hour and 15 minutes. The Vectorworks file was TINY (191Kb), and the resulting .PDF file was also relatively small (271Kb), yet still it takes forever to save, tying up my system for an hour each time. I know it's not supposed to work this way. Some of our vendors send me .PDF files of their Vectorworks drawings and they're telling me it takes them about 30 seconds. They are using comparable hardware/software configurations. This is unacceptable, as you can imagine. Has anyone out there experienced this? Any suggestions? (I know -- buy a Mac... Unfortunately that's not an option)
  7. Amen, Brother! I have a library of over 1000 drawings, most of which were created in MiniCad 6 and 7. When we bought 8.5 it was a nightmare. I still open drawings and get that annoying "a new file is being created and will be opened with a new name" message. Then if you want to actually CHANGE anything, you have to re-name the file, choose where you want to save it to, save the new file and delete the old one.
  8. My documents all print pretty much as soon as I send them. The problem is that less than 1% of my clients have any kind of CAD program, which leaves me needing to send them files that under no circumstances should be edited, only printed at a level of resolution where they can be sized 36" x36" or larger. (Hence the need for sending .PDF files..) I've tried exporting JPEG and .BMP files, but the resolution is poor at best. Most of what I do is larger scale (i.e. 50,000 sq. ft. or more), but my clients need to see details of much smaller (10'x10') areas within these drawings. 45 minutes to save as .PDF is UNACCEPTABLE. Any other ideas out there?
  9. I just bought Acrobat 5.0. Runing 8.5.2 on a 1ghz/512mb RAM PIII WIN2000 machine. Saving a simple 2D Vetorworks file to .PDF takes nearly an hour. This doesn't seem right. I've read in other posts that you can install a 'virtual printer' (on a Mac, at least) Here's how I'm doing it: In Vectorworks, go into the file menu, select 'print' and an 'acrobat distiller' option shows up along with my other available printers. Upon clicking this option, I get a menu asking for a filename, and asking to save it as a print (.PDF) file. Close to an hour later, it finally does save, and the pdf file looks great, but it seems like it shouldn't take that long. Also, how do I get it on one big page (i.e 36x36 instead of 12 8-1/2x11's. I've tried changing the print size in file/print setup, I've tried entering custom sizes in the acrobat options menu, and still, all I get is 8-1/2x11. Any other WIN2k users out there?
  10. Go into your "page" menu and select "layer scale" You'll find a number of standard architectural and engineering scales to choose from. If you need a custom scale such as the one you mentioned, you can enter manual values in the "paper scale" section of the menu at the lower right. For example, if you choose 1/16"=1'-0" the value entered in "paper scale" is 1:192, which is the actual ratio of 1/16" to 12" (i.e 12x16=192) I hope this helps.
  11. Mr Hutchinson, I also use a designjet 455. (Ours is the designjet 455CA, prints on a 36" roll) I've been considering the upgrade to 9, but now I'm not sure. Tell me this: Have you had any problems with your plotter? How is the resolution? Ever tried any photo-quality stuff? Do your colors match what is shown on the screen? I've had a ton of trouble with the HP ink cartridges, most notably the blue one. I'd love to hear how yours works.
  12. Hi. I just bought the full version of Acrobat (5.0) and I'm trying to create a .PDF file from a fairly simple 2D Vectorworks drawing. I'm using a 1GHz PIII w/512MB RAM/WIN2000 machine, which should be PLENTY fast enough. My question is this: How long does this normally take? From Vectorworks, I went into FILE/PRINT menu, and chose Acrobat Distiller, which SHOULD save the VW file as a .PDF, right? It's been thinking for 49 minutes so far. This doesn't seem right to me. Am I missing something? Is there something I need to do to the Vectorworks file first? Is this amount of time typical?
  13. I have a designjet 455CA that I use frequently. It's great for CAD line drawings, but the resolution isn't that great. Anything with a solid fill comes out pretty grainy. Forget about anything photo-quality.
  14. If you select the dimension and then go into your TEXT pulldown menu, you can change the text size from there. You don't have to ungroup the dimension. What I Like to do is put all my dimensions on one layer so if I need to make changes I can do so globally (i.e select all, and then change text size, Dim stds/etc.)
  15. I'm running Vectorworks 8.5.2 On a 1Ghz Pentium III/ w/512 MB ram. Whenever I copy and paste dimensions from one drawing into another, they paste as individual line segments and seperate text blocks for each character (128'-3/4" becomes 9 individual text characters) Almost like I had ungrouped them. I never ran into this problem with my PII/Win 98 Machine. I can't imagine having to re-dimension every time I copy/paste into a different drawing. Has anyone else heard of this?
  16. I had a similar problem on a co-worker's machine, running WIN 98. I installed and un-installed Renderworks several times, but it never asked for serial #'s. It turns out that Renderworks will not run unless you have Quicktime installed. I hope this helps.
  17. 12 pt. type would become almost 12 pt. and would no longer have a check by it in the font size menu. Also, one could see differences in font sizes, depending on the zoom level, for type which was all created with the same font size setting. Never looked right on the screen. This problem is gone. I only see it on older files and they can now be corrected and will remember the correction. The only change I made was a new computer with a new video card. I can't tell you how glad I am to hear that I'm not the only one with this problem. It has been my experience that Vectorworks simply does not handle text well.
  18. It sounds to me like you're having the same incompatibility issue as everyone else with G4's/OS9/8.5.2 I'd suggest you read the posts under "Video Card Woes". [This message has been edited by Jeff Lietz (edited 04-11-2001).]

I've had similar problems from time to time with certain layers crashing Vectorworks (and my system). What often works is to copy your entire drawing layer by layer and paste it into a new drawing. If you've already narrowed it down to just the dimension layer, you might just try copying that layer only and see if it prints on a new drawing. By chance was this drawing imported from another program?
  20. You may choose to create a template on which all your symbols live. When you start a new drawing you can just use the template instead of a new, blank drawing. you can then set all your preferences (line weights, text size and style,units/scale settings, layers and classes on your template. The symbols you use most often can be kept there as well. For existing files you can just import whatever symbols you need from the template. It's time consuming to set up, but once it's done you never have to do it again. Hope this helps.

For SMP support, you will need to stick with the PIII, the PII based Xeons, or wait for the SMP AMD Athlon board comming out soon. Well, that's ok. We decided to go with a 1 Ghz PIII w/512Mb ram. I tried to get them up to a gig, but they wouldn't go for it. Anybody out there using a similar system? I'd like to know how it runs.

Notice that we don't try to steal anything (for example upgrading the 3 packages while paying one). The reason is simple : softs are dongled, so even if we intended to do so, it would be impossible. Our dealer in Belgium pushes the problem in the faraway America. So will you please explain us where is our misanderstanding of your sales policy? Thanks a lot. Francesco. Hi, Francesco. I read your post a second time and I think I understand what you are asking. there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to upgrade just one license. What they will send is identical -- you'll get the install CD, the manuals/etc, but you'll only get one serial number. You'll then be able to actually install the program on as many machines as you want, but you'll be unable to have multiple users in the program at the same time.
  24. So, Vectorworks isn't designed to work with dual processors... What about Artlantis? I'm considering Cinema 4D as well. Would that justify the additional expense of a dual processor machine? Word on the street is that VW9 just might work with dual processors. Can anyone give me an estimated release date?
  25. Thanks for the info on Mac vs. WIN. I've been leaning towards a P4 mostly because of cross-platform issues. I've used Mac's and I do like them better, but our whole company is Windows based. I'll let you guys know what I wind up picking up and how it runs.
