  1. Bash around and use the help a lot! The help is generally obtuse, but every now and then it provides an "ah ha!" and solves your problem. And actually using VW on a project instead of test files will increase your learning speed. Besides help, many answers can be found here on the forums, but you need to be specific. I've been more successful learning VW through that combination than trying to watch the vids and learning tools that came with the software. The vids that came with the 2008 upgrade are better, but leave something to be desired.
  2. That's excellent. Now... How about a definition of the Drafting Workflow and the BIM Workflow? (I do know what BIM is, what I want to understand is the process for successfully including this data into a VW project.)
  3. Thank you again Mike! I looked at that site, it's linked from Vectorwiki, but somehow I missed the donationware page. That sounds just like what I need. Great!
  4. This is a Transition from AutoCAD question: Is there an equivalent in VW2008 to the Freeze (layer) or On/Off (layer) express tools from ACAD? For those lucky enough to have not used ACAD, these buttons allow you to click on an ACAD object and freeze its layer or turn it on or off. I'm looking for a way to do this to VW classes. I've tried searching the forums and Lightwiki, but haven't been successful. It's an issue now working on some large drawing imported from ACAD, I'd like to quickly hide the classes for extraneous info not pertinent to my design without having to hide the classes in the organization window or the navigation palette. I want to just select a tool then click on the object and have the class hidden! Anybody?
  5. Holy Cow! This is great. Thanks for this tool. And I even learned a ton just through the creation of this tool on my computer! Thanks again.
  6. The alias route didn't seem to work. We have a persistent network connection, so that shouldn't be an issue. Is there a way to give the alias a "hard" path including drive names instead of the relative path they seem to have? Maybe that's not quite right... Maybe I didn't do it right though. What I did was remove the "default" template and replaced it with an alias names "default" pointing to the default template on the server. I did the same thing with a different template for our projects. Both had alias pointing to the server. When I opened VW, it couldn't find the default template. Then when I tried a new doc from template it couldn't find the other one either. Darn macs... every thing's so user friendly!
  7. Is this something that I should look up in VW Help or is it part of OSX? I'm relatively new to both Mac and VW (especially from a CAD Manager perspective) so please pardon the stupid questions. Although step by steps are super, I'd appreciate just a point in the right direction. Plus we will be upgrading to 2008 in a few weeks... so maybe a hint there too? Thanks, jwlyon1
  8. I just tried it with alias's on the Mac (their equivalent of a shortcut) and it didn't work either. Dang.
  9. Is is possible to point VW at a network location for drawing templates? I have developed a template for our office and want to share it to everyone without having to continually save down to each computer's hard drive when a template revision is made. Also, it would be nice to make a template for each project and be able to point to that project specific template without mucking around in the application folder. By the way, thanks for everyone's help with my stupid titleblock questions. I think I got it and the template is very useful now! Thanks, jwlyon1
  10. Thank you so much!! Nowhere in the documentation does it say that. And based on comments from another thread about title blocks & drawing borders it seemed logical to think it was just an option. Thank you again.
  11. I don't seem to have the ability to create a red, plug-in object. Does anyone know why? If I'm just being extra dense, can you walk me through the process? Yes, I have read the helpfile and followed the steps. Unfortunately, I don't have the same choices as the help file for symbol creation. See my sig for versions and configuration. Screen shots are attached. Image 1 is the objects to be made into a plug-in object. Image 2 is the first symbol creation dialog. Image 3 is the symbol creation options dialog. As you can see in the third image, my only option is to "convert to group." When I select this option, it indeed creates a "blue" object. The help line below when I hover above this option says "click to convert to a group or plug-in object." So where is this missing plug-in option? Please, I've tried reading all the supplied material, and it's been no help. Thanks!
  12. Okay. I'm happy to send the file. But there is some new information: All the clouds were in viewports that went wonky. Clouds not in viewports were fine.
  13. I just tried to batch pdf several files for a drawing set. Each contained multiple sheets with several viewports on each sheet. I had put revision clouds within the annotation layer of the viewports. When I did a batch export to pdf, most (but not all!!!) of the clouds looked like rectangles. If I zoom in real tight, they are clouds, but with an insanely small radius. I can "fix" them seemingly by selecting each cloud and re-entering the radius, then it snaps back to normal. But sometimes it's really really difficult to select them, so this is not a expedient solution. Any ideas on why this happened? Any better solutions? It's costing me lots of time!! Naturally at a deadline!! ARGGGH!
  14. That seems like a very handy plugin! Thanks!
  15. rsa- Thanks for the tip, I did the steps the same except for the two very important options: NOT fitting to page (when is that every really a good idea?) and building the custom block on the DB. That makes altogether too much sense. Yes, the thread was talking about both custom drawing borders (which I would still like to figure out) as well as title blocks. Of course, I'm now confused by not being able to make a "red" symbol object.
  16. What mac os are you running? Any problems with 2008 on a system not running Leopard?
  17. I'm now at even more of a loss. I just tried to follow the helpfile steps to create a test red symbol, and I don't seem to have the option. Help! Screenshots attached. First pic: The collection of bits I wanted to make into a plug-in object. Second pic: The first dialog box in the process. Third pic: The "options" dialog box.
  18. Okay. That makes sense. The follow-up question then... Can you change a symbol from a "black" to a "red" after it's been created? And there is a disturbing piece in the help file for the red symbol, "Changes to a ?red? symbol definition affect future instances, but not existing ones" (quoted from helpfile definition for red symbol type on "Understanding Symbols" page). Maybe I'm coming at it from the wrong paradigm (that being AutoCAD, which is usually wrong), but I use the title block symbol on each sheet, and change the symbol to update the phase and submittal date, or on the rare occasion when the client gets all wacky and changes the project name. The helpfile leads me to believe that if this symbol was a plug-in object, then would I have to re-insert each instance of a title block and re-input all the sheet specific information? Let me know if I am being bone headed. I'm still new, but I want to understand the logic behind what I'm setting up before I crash and burn. Thanks.
  19. I'm trying to set up a standard title block for our office. I don't want the drawing border as set in the default, but I can't figure out how to change the default drawing border preferences. I can only do it through the OIP or by double clicking on it after it's inserted. How do I change the drawing border defaults? I have successfully created my custom title block according to the help files, and it works almost perfect: it doesn't insert a the right spot in the default drawing border, it inserts in the right spot on my customized drawing border. I can easily provide screen shots if it would be helpful. Thanks!
  20. Okay. I figured it out. Even though I am using the default Architecture Workspace (the one that ships with VW Arch) it changes that command. Thankfully the help file says nothing about this. The command not only changes location, but it also changes names. So my follow-up question: Is there a difference between the commands in the two workspaces? Thanks!
  21. I wanted to cut section through a building drawing, and according to the help file I have, it should be under Model>Cut 3D Section. But my menu has no such commands, not even grayed out. I am using Vectorworks 12.5.2 on a Mac, with Architecture and Renderworks. Can anyone tell me where to go? Or if somehow I don't have this tool or something? Thanks! Sorry if it's a bonehead question, I'm only on my second real day of work with VW...
  22. Is there a download that will do this? The disks seem to be fine, as a test I just loaded it on a G5 powerpc mac running OS X 10.4.9 and it worked no problem. If ordering new disks are the only option, I guess I'll email tech support... Thanks.
  23. I'm trying to install vectorworks on a MacBook Pro (Intel Core Duo 1.83mhz 2gb ram running OS X 10.4.9) from the disk. The disks are for version 12.0.0. I put the disk in, and double click the install icon, according to the directions in the readme file. The icon does its zoom thing, and then nothing. It never asks for a serial number, never even seems to execute a process. Any suggestions? Thanks
