I have changed a fill colour from brown to blue on some doors in top-view and the colour changes, but when I view it in 3d and render it in OGL the colour remains brown. I have gone through the class settings and the object info is set to render none and the classes set to fill/blue. I have changed the colour of other doors and windows in the same layer with no problems, just click and change the colour but this door just wont have it? I also have some extrudes that I have tried to apply a texture to but they will only render with the fill colour. Again I have gone though the object info render and class settings but no luck. Any ideas? Macbook Pro VWD 2009

Over the past few years Rino 4 has become a full on package for 3d, rendering, animation, drafting, engineering, analysis, manufacturing and now has features and modules especially for the marine industry. R4 also has companion products and is compatible with RhinoMarine, FastShip, GHS, MaxSurf, Tribon, AutoShip, AutoCAD, and ShipCAM, as well as most CAM and marine analysis products. Unfortunately VWD and Rino4 are different beasts and if you are looking for a career in the marine industry you should take a look at R4 and its modules.

Hi All I have set up a number of sheets and selected ISO A1=594 x 841mm or A3=297 x 420mm in the page set-up but I keep getting a series of boxes defined by my page breaks resulting in cropping and a number of sheets being printed containing elements of the whole image. When you view the page you have a solid black boarder line defining the page then an internal grey broken line defining the print area but I seem to get a main box with a single broken outline plus a small box on the bottom and on the right hand side in landscape view. It seems the print pre-sets for ISO are wrong in VectorWorks Designer 2009 as I didn't have this problem before using VWA 12.5 PS how do I place and image here to view? Mac OSX 10.5.6 Macbook Pro 17"

Hi all I have just been playing with Adobe's Acrobat 3d for the first time. This is a viewer and presentation package for the CAD and design industry that will allow anybody with the Free Acrobat viewer 8 to rotate, view and manipulate cross sections and renderings of a 3d model and a lot more besides. Just imagine having a 3d rendered model and having a transparent plane that you can place and move in any direction through the model to show you the internal structures or to click the numerous render and transparency settings, its great fun but nothing new to Solid-Works users, but unfortunately for us humble VWA users its a glimpse into the future. I just hope VWA will support this program and if they already don't when will they? On another tact, I just wish VW would bring these features directly into VW because to create these fantastic presentation documents it will cost you a mere ?969.38 - Ouch!

I have just taken a look at the 2 suggested movies from http://www.designexpress.be/NL/IntB-8.html and http://www.solidworks.com/pages/successes/Success_Stories.html - click Demos. You will have to sign in to view the Demo movies but they are quite good. It would be nice if VW could produce a couple training movies in English to show haw to produce a couple of quality hull designs i.e. a displacement hull, and a semi displacement hull with chimes fitted out with bulkheads, floors and fittings etc.

I am surprised the collage is suggesting using Rhino for naval architecture as it does not have the modules for hydrostatics and production etc. Unless its purely for presentation? take a look at Maxsurf @ www.formsys.com. Saying that a new member of our yacht design team has sugested using Rhino but unfortunatly I have no real info about it?

Hi Ken If you are looking to design and build a boat forget it. I would not even attempt to produce a boat hull with VW. Part of our family business is a boat yard and yacht design and we use the industry standard Maxsurf from Formsys "formsys.com". This is a package like VW were you can purchase various modules for hull design and analyses, however if you are just producing a 3d model for illustrative purposes struggle on, but like you I wish VW had some features for the marine/boat-building industry? What do you think Katie "I know your are watching"

Hi Katie Has there been a fix to the compatibility problems with some of Dosch's texture files in VW 2008

Katie I think you let the cat out of the bag by mentioning 2008 will support 3Dconnexion products, So come on Katie, spill the beans! -
Dynamic Viewports and split screens
Carl Newton replied to JohnS's question in Wishlist - Feature and Content Requests
Yep I support this, VW should take a leaf from there sister company Maxon Cinema 4D and the options they supply for the display / view set up. -
3D Navigation Device Support

VectorWorks 2008? Ok Katie spill the beans, what new features could we expect and when will we get to play? -
I am also looking to produce high quality renderings of marinas and buildings etc. and I have seen Maxon-Cinema 4D has a dedicated architecture module that looks quite good so take a look and see what you think?

For me I use a Mac 17" PowerBook G4 on site and find the size and power quite good, except when I undertake large 3d renderings. Because of this I will be investing in a new desktop with a 30" screen for office use that will also give me access to windows on one machine. Remember if you use an external mouse or keyboard with your laptop you will have used-up all the USB slots on your laptop as the dongle will have taken up the other. This will mean you will have to disconnect your mouse or keyboard if you want to connect to a printer or any other USB device, fine if you like using the touch pad?

It would be nice if VWA supported multiple view/work panels like you find in Cinema 4D and other Nemetschek products.

Roof gutters
Carl Newton replied to Don@Black Dog's question in Wishlist - Feature and Content Requests
Ok guys lets get back to the subject. Yes it would be good to have a gutters tool, however I personally think the whole roof tool needs upgrading and extending to a level of the windows tool were you can add and adjust multiple surfaces that represent the different layers in roof construction i.e ceilings, joists, felt, battens and tile etc. Also to have the ability to extend the tile surface beyond other surfaces, add roof-lights with angled flashing's from Velux, lumen and the Roof Light Company, and perhaps a separate tool / library for the gutters, down pipes and drainage. Lindab come to mind for contemporary gutters and down pipes etc. -
Wouldn't it be nice if VWA had a 3d symbol library of roof lights from Velux, Lumen and the Roof light Company, after all it is a leading architectural cad program isn't it? Wouldn't it also be nice if the roof tool would accept them?

Still no Cure for Double line boarder printing?
Carl Newton replied to Carl Newton's question in Troubleshooting
Hi All I have the boarder set to a value of 20 which gives you 2 boarders, one fixed to the sheet size and the other is adjustable via the Drawing Border Settings panel. I can set the Drawing Border Settings to 0 which will leave a single boarder but it means you can not customise the boarder size within the sheet, which defeats the object of having an adjustable boarder value setting? Hy Gytis Thanks, they do have some great textures and the weathered patio looks very good unfortunately they don't have the cladding patterns I am looking for or the plain wood textures, they all have various flooring patterns, brilliant if you want that pattern. It would be fantastic if someone like Arroway would put together a DVD containing purely timber textures, Cladding, house decking, Yacht decking and Plain timber with a cut, planed, new, and weathered texture to it. I don't now what the architecture is like in the Bronx but in the UK there has been an explosion of designs and construction that use timber, zinc and copper claddings from traditional Oak frame designs to state of the art multi-story buildings. The environment and sustainable building and design has also become a major issue. If Arroway or anybody-els produces such a DVD let me Know!
