  1. Okay, hopefully the screen capture is attached here ... (Thanks for the tip!)

    Aligning objects

Actually, the cylinder is offset from the cube so I could see its round side protruding from the cube once the solids are added. A couple things I noticed after I read your post: - I created a new cube and cylinder in top/plan view and it added the solids fine. - In my project situation, I had created the cylinder in the right view. I noticed that it doesn't like to snap very accurately from that view. - Also, the "cube" I want to use is actually a solid subtraction where I removed a couple chunks. I wonder if VW behaves differently with that. When you mentioned the bottom Z height I checked the OIP for both and the solid subtraction does not have that field. - I created a new cube, took a quarter out of it with a solid subtraction, and then tried to add a solid cylinder with the same length. Moved it into position via the snapping and then added the solids. I can still see the edge of the cylinder protruding for what appears to be millionths of an inch but enough to show. Is the problem here that VW does not handle the solid subtraction as accurately as a simple one-step extrusion? And/or that I am attempting to align the objects in right/back/etc. views instead of plan view?
  3. An intersecting gable roof created after a hipped roof won't render. In fact, no roof I create now will render. Both are set to the Class Texture which is left to default. Tried setting the texture manually but no change. Please forgive me if this is an elementary question. Can we place screen shots in these posts? I wanted to do that to show what was happening but it appears to only allow a URL. Grateful for any help.
  4. I am having trouble with something that ought to be simple. I create a cube and a cylinder and combine the two into one via Add Solids. I want the sides of the cylinder to align with the sides of the cube. (They are both the same dimension in that direction.) I have snap-to-objects and snap-to-intersections on. I align them, perform the add, and the resulting combination is not aligned. I can still see the edges of the cylinder protruding from the cube (where I don't want to see it any more). If you snap the objects together on a plane and then zoom way down to them I find they are not aligned. So I try to line them up manually at a hyper zoom level. Perform the Add Solids again and they still won't align. Why isn't the snapping doing its job? Is there an additional setting I need to check for that? I turned off snapping to the grid some time ago and these objects are in a blank field so there is nothing else to interfere with the snapping (or lack thereof). Trying to detail some corbels and frustratingly stuck! Anyone else experience this?
  5. Jim, I have not yet tried to load older files. I just purchased the Z1 and loaded VW2014 clean and ran the SP1 update. Then I created a new file with a simple rectangular foundation, slab, and walls. Just now coming back to take a look at it, I see it released selecting one of the walls and lets me select whatever I want. (Good.) But when I select them, the OIP says "No Selection" so I can't do anything to them. That's in Top/Plan view. I switched to Top view and the OIP shows the wall info but then the selection is stuck again on one wall and won't let me choose anything else. Flipping around the different views, I can get different things to happen but inconsistently. One time it will work, the next it won't.
  6. I am having the same basic problems in just getting around the model before/after VW SP1. The NVIDIA driver is the latest for this unit. (320.78) Scrolling is almost non-functional. Only occasionally it moves. Selecting an object does not work. I can't even get started on something, let alone loading it up with a big model. !@#$ Jim, have they tested this on the Z1 workstations w/NVIDIA video?
  7. Just created a new file from scratch and created a simple rectangular foundation with 4 walls and already VW2014 is crashing, hanging onto selected items and not letting go, scrolling sometimes lags by several seconds. It really should not have been released working like that though it appears others are having better luck. Super frustrating. I have to go back and schlub out my old portable running VW2012 to get work done.
  8. Thanks, mar schrammeyer - That's the answer we needed. And this is a good example of something that should be in the Vectorworks instructions and is glaringly missing.
  9. Thanks guys. Now I just need to find a showroom to try out some workstations and talk to a knowledgeable salesperson. The only one I know of in the south bay (Silicon Valley) recently closed and now all that is left are places like Best Buy. (You know, where you ask a question and the salesperson walks over and reads aloud from the little price tag.)(!) I told my friend that works at HP that they need to do something about the destruction wrought by big-box retailers. They may need to follow in Apple & Microsoft's footsteps with their own stores.
  10. DWorks (or anyone) - The Vectorworks system requirements list does not include Win8. Is anyone using it with Win8 anyway? VW2012 or VW2013? On dual displays, I was thinking of getting one really good one - maybe a 27" for modeling - and then a smaller cheapo to hold palettes and desktop apps. Any thoughts/experiences with this idea? Should I try to match the displays or does this make sense. (Just trying to be cheap.)
  11. I am considering a hardware upgrade now for a few reasons. But I am interested in what issues (if any) the multiple display users may be having since I found the following in Vectorworks' 2013 hardware recommendations: "Note: The other members of the Quadro family, namely the NVS series, are more geared towards driving multiple displays and less suited for complex 3D modeling. We recommend that you avoid these cards." This was about the NVIDIA Quadro series but the statement seems to suggest a rather broad issue. NVIDIA seems to be their top pick and the Quadros are the best. Anyone here have a different opinion? Are dual displays better handled on MACs vs. Windows? (not in the past but now). (I am a Windows XP user about to go to Win7.) Grateful for your shared experience ... Mik
