  1. Hi Hakman

1 - When you say Texture bed, have you actually created a modifier that is a texture bed that sits below your 3D Polygon? If so, try unchecking Draw 3D on the texture bed to get it to lie on the surface of the model.

2- To change the vertices of a 3D Polygon, use the Reshape tool. The vertices can be moved by clicking on them and moving them to a new location. This can be along X and Y axes, but also Z, although this is difficult to do interactively in Top View. Instead, with the 3D Polygon selected, on the Object Info palette, change the Movie field to Vertex Only. Then you can use the forward and backward buttons to move across the vertices and from there you can set specific X, Y, and Z coordinates for each point.

    I hope that helps.

If not, give me a shout.

  2. Hi Grant

Thanks for the plug. I actually wrote a quick migration guide for those moving from the old Renderworks (pre 2011) to 2011 and above.

But there is a full Getting Started Guide for Renderworks, written by the excellent Danel Jansenson. You can download it from the Vectorworks website.

    Hope that helps

  3. The Vectorworks Cloud Service enables cloud sharing of files, production of PDF files and markup of those PDF files with them synced back to the desktop. The PDF files can be shared via link or email, or viewed and annotated on an iPad using the Vectorworks Nomad app. It is available to Vectorworks Service Select customers only. 2D viewport processing is free. 3D processing (rendering of models in viewports) uses 3D credits which are an additional cost.

CadFaster exports a 3D model into the cloud that can be viewed on a Windows machine as a self-contained exe file. It can be opened on an iPad also. The model can be rotated, walked through etc. Annotation can be attached to elements on the model. Collaboration sessions can be set up through the cloud so the model can be shared and annotated in real time. It is not limited to Vectorworks Service Select users I believe as it is a third party product made by CadFaster.

Hope that helps with your questions regarding the difference between the two cloud offerings.

  4. Hello again. Sorry for the delay - time difference!

Yes, you can ungroup the roof and then edit each element separately. The downside of this is that it will no longer know its a roof. I don't know if you need it to remain "self-aware"? You will be left with a series of Roof Faces and the geometry of the fascia.

    Hope that helps!

  5. Hi G

No time to go into this in detail for you right now, but the answer you are looking for is the Create Plot and Model View command. It uses a combination of design layer viewports to create both the laid down view of position and the vertical view. You can then use a combination of these views on your Sheet Layer viewports as desired.

If you don't need a laid down view, you can place the lights on the position and then change its rotation on the Object Info palette.

Hope that helps. Gotta run. Sorry!

  6. Also, bear in mind that if you are rendering with lights, the light sources themselves will not be visible in the scene - just the light they emit hitting other surfaces. In 2011 and above, you can use textures with reflectivity set to Glow to create something that looks like a visible light. In earlier versions of Renderworks, you can create a texture with Constant reflectivity as the same idea.

  7. The issue with touching pads is:

If the points at which they touch are at different elevations, one set of points will be ignored (those drawn last). So, the site will potentially update, but will not give you the results you are expecting.

If pads touch at the same elevation (for example, roadway segments that are climbing a slope) the touching pads message will still be displayed, but it won't cause problems for the model. Although one set of data is ignored, the other set is exactly the same, so the end result is what you would expect.

Yes, it's a really good idea to use separate boundaries. With 2011 onwards, you can also place modifiers on different layers and set the site model to use modifiers on visible layers only. This also assist with problem determination as you can view the effects of smaller groups of modifiers and understand what's going on better.

Another thing that can catch you out, if you have Vectorworks 2010, is that any pads drawn in Layer Plane instead of Screen Plane will also fail to update. It's fixed from 2011 onwards.

  8. Hi John

DWG supports a single "model space", while we lucky VW users can split up our model space into multiple design layers.

When exporting, you have the choice on the dialog of exporting design layers as separate dwg files only.

Vectorworks classes, by default, become DXF layers. But, you could export your design layers as dwg layers by checking the appropriate button on the export dialog. BUT, you will then lose your classes.

    Hope that helps

  9. Hi Lucy

You might have encountered a bug that existing in 2010. If your Pad is drawn in Layer Plane (check the Object Info palette), it will not work. Make sure you are in Top/Plan view and then change the plane of the Pad to Screen Plane. It should work then.

If not, use the View bar to make sure you are drawing in Screen Plane and then redraw your pad.

This is no longer a problem, but I remember did cause issues in 2010.

I hope that helps you to move forward.

  10. Your data is stored in a file called VW Plants.USR.

However, you won't find it under c:\Program Files\Vectorworks 2008. This is the original file, as installed. When you make changes to it, the modified file is stored in the following folder:

    C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Nemetschek\VectorWorks\2008\Plant Database\VW Plants.

I don't know why your database would lose this data... but presumably you have a recent backup that you can restore if it really is lost?

    All the best

  11. Hi

Your data with photos can only be viewed using the Vectorworks Plant Database, which is separate application within Filemaker.

When you create a text list from the Vectorworks Plant Database, Vectorworks Landmark can read that text file and use it to attach the data to your plant symbols. But not the images you have stored in the database. The text files hold just that - text.

    Hope that helps.

  12. Well, you need to convert those 2D shapes into 3D, but you want to retain the 2D. I would suggest you use Landmark > Objects from Polyline to convert your 2D shapes to Hardscapes, Landscape Areas and Walls. Each of these will have a 2D and 3D component and can be set at any Z value relative to the design layer.

To create a mesh, you need levels measured on site, in a 3D format, which you can import and then create a site model.

I hope that this will help you get started, but what you have asked is really quite a huge question and not something that can be answered in a quick forum post... But I do hope it helps you to get started.
