  1. i'm not sure if i'm loosing my mind, but i seem to remember there was a way of deciding if when printing a drawing across multiple pages, if the page count or layout was 'right first then down' or 'down first then right'... or is it always down first? or does it change depending if the page is vertical or horizontal... cheers...

    reference: manual update command

hello, i was wondering if there was any other way to manually update a reference that having to go to 'tools/organization/etc.' i'm currently working between two files, discovering changes to be made in a referenced file, going in it and making them, and coming back to the main file to verify how the changes turned out... if i could have a custom command in a palette, where i could double click to update said reference that would speed things up for me. but i'm not sure how to make it...
  4. I just found this script too, thanks a lot!!!

    cumulative dimensioning

it is common in many countries to work with various 'dimension axis' and measure distances from objects to those axis using what could be described as 'half' a dimension, meaning there's one arrow, one witness line, and a number. dimensionally speaking, constrained base-line dimensions do the job, except that the way they are represented is what i need to change from a two sided dimension going all the way to the axis to a one sided one which is on the side of the object only... i've been using vw for years, mostly in the u.s., but now i'm in argentina, and if i'm not able to solve this problem i will have to switch to autocad. very basic example of what i'm trying to describe: http://www.arquitectura.com/cad/artic/replanteo.asp any help would be highly appreciated... i added a screenshot showing what vw gives me and below what it is that i need...

    cumulative dimensioning

benson, thank you for your suggestions. i think re-shifting the dimension values to the exact position is less than i initially imagined vw was going to oblige me to do... so it might be fine... michael, thanks for your files. in vw 2008 when i hit recalculate (after having inserted one or more new symbols) the whole worksheet goes like in the screen shot i attach to this post. but having attempted a solution to this is already a lot, i'm not asking for any more of your time... thank you!

    cumulative dimensioning

appreciate it very much, benson. based on your suggestions what i?m actually trying to achieve is a group object containing a invisible dimension (where one can only see text), and a symbol for the arrow. i duplicate and reshape this group every time i need a new dimension. the only problem i'm still not able to solve is the misalignment of the text being always what i want it to be - it changes with every reshape... i wish i could make it be fixed at the position of my choice within the dimension.. nicolas i've added a file with the object i created...

    cumulative dimensioning

if i could somehow draw invisible dimensions whose values feed the data in a symbol like yours... and if then the symbol would be automatically positioned to the end side of the dimension... but even if all that was possible i don't know how to do it...

    cumulative dimensioning

michael, i appreciate your taking the time to come up with a solution. even if not perfect, it's more automated than making groups and editing text blocks... so thank you. i'm probably going to use it at least while i can't figure out anything else. thanks again... nicolas

    cumulative dimensioning

please help!! even saying it can't be done will allow me to move on to find alternative solutions to my problem... or maybe this has been acknowledged in versions of vw posterior to 2008, which is what i'm still using...

    expand room finishes categories

one other thing is that in vw2008 there doesn't seem to be a numbering system on the part of the program. when one creates a space tag the number field is empty, and i'm not sure if any kind of numbering is valid for vw... in my case i use letters and numbers, but in the finish schedule i get a very crazy ordering that doesn't make any sense, but that i discovered is related to how to the front or the back drawing wise the tags are... quite disconcerting...

    expand room finishes categories

hello, i still use vw2008, and i'm trying to find a way to expand so to speak the room finishes categories that are established within the application. for example, i need to assign spaces not only ceiling types but ceiling paint, on two separate columns that is. the same with walls... i need to be able to discriminate between type of stuco or tiling and paint... i'm not sure if i'm missing anything, or maybe in argentina (where i work now) we organize finishes slightly differently... regards, nicolas d'angelo

    Space Tool: complex numbering

Hello, i'm using vw2008 and working on a finish schedule and the room finishes and having trouble with how i understand the system is designed simple because i need more finish categories... for example i need ceiling material and ceiling paint as two separate categories... is there a workaround that you can figure for this? am i missing something in terms of how finishes work in this version of vw? regards, nicolas d'angelo

    line[S] into segments

i want to use the 'line into segments' command to place 2d loci on several lines at a time. is this possible or what would be the workaround? vw2008/mbp 2.33 - 2gb/mac os10.5.5
  15. nicolas d

    line[S] into segments

the thing is even more cumbersome than i thought... if you have to, say, insert eight 2d loci in a hundred lines of different lengths, not only you have to do it one by one but also because the command is a script or something it does not remember your last input, so you have to input '8' each time and click or un-click whatever options... the way i'm working around it is by not using it. i create the 8 2d loci one time, then group them, duplicate them and reshape them as a group from line to line.

    crazy screen behavior

hello, i'm running vw 12.5.3 on leopard on a macbookpro and am experiencing some really odd, almost psychedelic behavior on the part of the program. everything goes well until i open a file with complex hatches, that's when my screen starts to become painted with crazy yellows, purples, etc, and as move the mouse or try to do anything it worsens and worsen. i'm not sure what do, the computer's video capabilities seem to be fine in all other software i use (which includes adobe's cs3 suite, apple's aperture, etc.)
  17. how about batch exporting separate files? in all of the sets i worked so far, almost every sheet is a separate file. in this situation the problem of batch exporting pdf versions also persists. why the ability of importing multiple dwg files but not the ability of exporting them? it seems clear that importing single AND multiple files in ANY of the formats that vw is capable to manage would be the best way to go about it.

    rectangles

i want to see the rectangles' dimensions in the object info window as 'x' and 'y' like it used to be. i don't understand why or in which cases the new 'width' and 'height' system could be good. often times i'm wasting extra fractions of time thinking if the rectangle is rotated or not and where is the width and where is the height. can this be disabled or changed back somehow? can i edit rectangles like before, like i can still edit polygons for example, with the good, proven, 'x' and 'y' system? i use duplicate a lot, and many times instead of drawing a new item (this not only applies to rectangles) i duplicate another of the same sort and modify it. this is to me a reasonable thing to do, for example, when one wants to incidentally draw an object in a class that is not the active class... anyway, the thing is, i duplicate and rotate rectangles and other objects a lot and now i wind up confused with how my rectangles are oriented, whereas i'm never in a situation in which i am grateful to know which side is labeled 'width' and which is labeled 'height'.

    rectangles

at last someone says something... i was starting to feel lonely with this. but, am i so wrong, am i missing something from this new way of editing rectangles? it would be nice if someone from nemetschek could explain what's the idea behind this change. for that matter, it would be good to hear anyone argue in its favor...

    zooming in inside a worksheet

putting them in a viewport and scaling it down is what i've adopted too. the viewport strategy also works in my case, where the worksheet doesn't fit the sheet and the use of viewports allows me to not brake the worksheet in two (like i would have done before) but to simply use two viewports showing two different parts of the same worksheet. thank you hugues, nicolas
  22. in vw2008sp2, i am working on worksheets with a font size of 6, and need to zoom in within each worksheet to see the text larger while i'm editing it. it sounds simple but i don't know how to do it.

    workspaces

maybe this was asked before, i couldn't find a topic discussing it. i use a 15" mbpro laptop in conjunction with a 22" flat screen. i would like to have two versions of my workspace, one that fits well the 15" screen, another that works with a 22" screen. but workspaces don't seem to recall the positions of the palettes from session to session, particularly the 'constraints', 'attributes', 'object info', and 'navigation' ones. what would be the way to work around the problem of different size screens and workspace layout in VW2008? by the way, it would be nice to see the workspace editor improve a little in future versions of the program. i don't think it has evolved much in ages, and it was not amazing to start with: the window is not resizable, it is not clearly responsive when one wants to drag commands or tools, and the general criteria of how it works is not easily understandable to people who are new to the program, but at the same time is a critical feature for people coming from other cad programs wanting to soften the transition by personalizing the platform.
  24. it is appreciated that the selection process becomes more precise and with more options, but it is equally important to keep the features that are basic and proven good. in VW2008 i find now that regardless if an object or multiple objects are selected, as long as you see the handles you can no longer drag (move) objects by end points or center points, you can only stretch them. before, even in 12.5.3 you would offset the cursor slightly from the point to get the 'cross' cursor to move it instead of the 'diagonal arrow' cursor to stretch it. being able to work in this way is crucial to my way of operating with the program. am i missing something? is there any trick that i'm missing?

    selection handles and dragging objects

i think i just found the problem: VectorWorks/Preferences/Edit/Snap Radius i had it set to 1 pixel. i changed it to 5, or to 10, and now i see the cross cursor again as i approach selected objects' endpoints and center points. i might have changed this setting to 1 in the first place (i don't think it comes set to 1 by default) without paying too much attention. i'm not sure when it would be beneficiary to have it set so small. nicolas
