  1. I am now bound to use only parametrical objects. Symbols are unefficient for this kind of project (lots and lots of objects similar but not quite the same). But don't think it is anything that special. It is not.

    That's why I wonder.

    Too bad we cannot batch render hidden line.

    If I run a batch render, it goes in a breeze. It doesn't have to produce a screen display, which seems to be the main problem here.

    But correct me if I am wrong.

  2. Very very long. Time for many many cigarettes.

    Rendering a building complex with windows on section viewports might well take 15 minutes (all needless classes out). Whereby it is dramatically improved since VW 12.5.1, as you know.

    Normal viewports are somewhat faster. But also because I can switch off much more classes.

    The last 5-8 minutes are a white screen and I don't trust to do anything on the PC. Which becomes completely unreliable and not responding. And (just tried a hard rendering) it goes about 57-59% CPU. Which is OK.

    All these speed statements are pretty meaningless, you agree, not really knowing what objects, how many, are to be rendered.

  3. Yes.

    Thank you Ray, I am so frustrated with this issue. You seem to have a very similar configuration and be quite happy.

    I can try the latest card driver, it is always good (done a number of these). But I simply cannot stand this any longer. It makes my workflow a nighmare.

  4. OK, then it must be the computer. I am having a hell of a time with this:

    AMD 64 X2 Dual core 3800+ 2 GHz, 2 GB RAM, NVidia GeoForce 7600 GS 256 MB, dual monitors

    Unbearable. and I only do VW with it.

    The screen goes white at every render, windows if moved leave aliases. But the CPU never goes above 50%.

    What shall I think about it?

    thank you.

  5. Then you'll have some pretty bad insertion problems (caps, breaks and so on). Not to speak of the overwork in managing them across a lot of files (lets say 1 project with 200 files, like I have). Even if you are disciplined in taking them only from a predefined library set of your own. Referencing the library. A horror it is.

    Much much more efficient to set up styles for them and switch attributes on the fly. Hundreds of them.

    PIO doors and Wins are only good for storing in sym defs, but in order to work efficiently, they have to expand to PIO objects when they are placed.

  6. If you don't have Info Editor you simply waist an AMAZING amount of time doing things which can be solved in 2 clicks.

    I don't see A SINGLE reason not to use a tool which is not only awesome functional, around since a lot of time (it was called Record Editor before), but also developed from one of the people who made VectorWorks.

    You hardly can find a better tool. And Charles is not a whatever third party developer. Dropping interest in the thing in a while.

    Do read this -perfectly elementary- page of instructions and get going to advanced nail polishing (or forum writing) while VW does the job for you. BTW, you don't even need to read the instructions. It is self-explanatory.

    I truly don't understand your position. The target is to do things fast, isn't it? Not to preserve the team to learn how to click on a list of pios in order to "Change them en masse".

    Alternative is only spending one's own time clicking win after win, door after door in each wall.

    What is better?

  7. (VW Architect)

    It would be nice if "Enable connected wall modes" could be triggered on the fly, while moving a wall. This would be consistent with the behaviour of the other mode group keys.

    * Select a wall

    * begin shifting it

    * trigger the 4th mode group key (P as default, I think, if I didn't change it)

    * the wall constraints won't be released.

    Other "modes" can be triggered on the fly. For example:

    * select a symbol

    * begin moving it

    * while moving, trigger the "wall insertion mode" off, in order to prevent the symbol to insert in a wall, if the final position wished for is close to a wall.

  8. Yes. But you have Reshaper, which makes such wishes needless. Reshaper is the only solution to fast editing in many many cases. I love it. But the people in my office don't have it. And I cannot convince them to buy it.

    A lot of money they'll give out in lost time.

    P.S.

    You "are" Reshaper, is better.

  9. I am buying the dongled international version since years in Berlin. My reseller is extremely friendly and never treated me any differently because I dislike the German version. Even if he probably earns less on my licences.

    (I am not German, even if living in Germany).

    So, I'd say, it depends very much on the reseller.

    I had difficulties with the German distributor, though: when MiniCad became VectorWorks I was told I couldn't upgrade my licences because they where illegal, since not registered in Germany. I had registered at that time for years in USA. We had a quarrel and I -to this day- refuse to register in Germany (but I suspect that my reseller did it for me... just wish me to feel I'm keeping my pride high...).

  10. If possible, a shortcut to access directly the "L" (length) value of the Display Databar would be a great improvement for objects or actions supporting this, like moves on axis extensions lines, line objects, text blocks....

    Alternatively, the said "L" field could go to the first position.

    As of today, the first 2 fields are the X and Y coordinates. Followed by the length "L".

    It means that one has to PRESS TAB 3 TIMES, in order to access the length.

    It is quite seldom that one needs to manipulate the X,Y values (in all my VW years I never did it once). While one continuously uses the Length value.

    If such a shortcut already exists, please accept my apologizes and tell me what it is.

  11. I wish Fundamentals would be like Architect, but without Plug-ins. That would be a fair Fundamentals.

    Plug-ins are an enormous additional value, it is only fair to pay for them.

    Consider: what facilities are built in for Restaurators? None. Even if 80% of the building activities in Europe deals with old building (while these activities still do not make the architects involved "restaurators"). USA might be different.

    We have to twist the application in order to achieve some efficiency in restoration. The pios in Architect do not help us, we do not use them. And still VW is the best app for such specialized branch, because of its elasticity. So Fundamentals was for us the better choice, until it became so poor.

    As it is now, Fundamentals is a light version with much disabled.

    If ever NNA considers developing a Restorator Module, please accept my immediate application for a job.

    vsd (architect, specialized in conservative restoration, reduced to renovation....)

  12. Robert, if I might express an observation, the sections are slowed down considerably by light objects. Even standard hidden lines sections, if the drawings are complex (many windows, doors...)

    * ambient info

    * light objects on displayed layers

    * surface lights expecially

    ... all should be switched off or disabled until the end.

    And the cast shadows option obviously checked out.

    Unexpectedly, it is faster to render a section under final quality renderworks.

  13. Many people are not aware that even unlocked, the layer link keeps its "pointer" quality: mirror the layer it represents.

    Unlocked, you can move it anywhere you wish, and will keep on updating.

    This way you override the "originality" of VectorWorks: layers are always bound to their insertion point, who's related to the origin.

    You shouldn't move the origin, even if this is possible.

    I'm saying this, because recently I saw people working since YEARS with VW, who didn't know this was possible. And complained about the fixed location of layers.

    vsd.

  14. Glad to help. If you tell me exactly what you need, I could post a little tutorial on vcor. After all it could help others too.

    Hoping that tutorials of this kind will be soon made useless by increased PIO functionality.

    P.S.

    Taking it easy. It is just a very old story, it will keep on popping up as long as old MC users are around TechBoard. There was a general feeling of betrayal. It is still there.

    Resuming this story: from the great feeling of open-source-community, all of a sudden we got a serial number branded on the arm. Down to nameless "user". Only worth the Module we buy.

    But so is it now.

  15. Don't tell me. Just around VW 8 Nemetschek Allplan was selling the licences not only at unbelievable prices, but also with some sort of monthly bribe coercion called "support". It was awfully expensive, about 150$ every month. When MC was bought by NNA I left the lists (I had another name). I knew I wouldn't be able to pursue the product any longer, no need to script any further.

    And indeed. Architect and the system of modules was borne. Exactly like Allplan.

    At least my other fear, Allplan recycling MC's engine and kill the product, didn't come true.

    Nemetschek was giving the licences at the universities for free, schooling included. All students would begin with it and, since what people really likes the most is not thinking, stick to it forever. My own partner (german, schooled under Allplan) found the transition to VW like fresh air, after his Allplan years.

    That was a clever tactic. I think they still do it.

    We in Italy, at the University of Venice, had not even the chairs, think of CAD for free. Might be for this reason that Allplan never got foot there (lack of chairs...)
