  1. 4 Weeks start to finish, 3 VW users, 6 different files and models, referenced together for comparative studies while designing. Using non free form modeling tools, namely walls, windows, etc.
  2. You can not, part of the many teamwork issues you will confront along the way when traveling that path. We do the same thing and make sure, even though it is a hassle, that no team member adds it as a favorite. Browse to file seems to cause the same issue. Could be a simple OS permissions issue, never had a resolution proposed. Good Luck.
  3. Petri For some commentary on another community members post. You had to be fast to catch what was said as it was pulled rather quickly.
  4. Why would you want to do this? Seems like your setting yourself up for major management issues. Design Layer Viewports with Vectorworks should always be on their own Layer, named as such so that when you reference that file to another you do not use the Design Layer Viewport or its layer as you end with no visual control of the DLVP object in the other file. What is the issue with creating more layers that are defined for the purpose of the objects on that Layer? One should be naming all DLVP and SLVP and most other objects if you ever want to manage this information effectively. With Microstation this type of referencing though possible was considered a bug and if used at all should be used in a 2d only workflow. It is quite easy to create another Layer you know.
  5. Pat SP3 is the same as SP2 in this regard. This is works as designed, if the Design Layer Viewport is created from Design Layers and Classes within the file then Class control is class control for all object types where ever one might change them. In the Referenced variant you can also get this same lack of control depending on the toggle selected but for most the Design Layer Viewport from a referenced file will hold its class setting configuration, even in the Sheet Layer Viewport. The Design Layer Viewport Object is really two different things either internally Linked like a managed layer link or externally linked to objects, layers, and classes in another file. The help system does not describe this well and could be cause for much confusion. Once understood by the user a system needs to be developed for where content is created and the use of Design Layer Viewports in relation to Sheet Layer Viewports.
  6. Dan J. You can do all the same with Design Layer Viewports if you create one per floor, give each a name and in the future you can do all that you describe. If you want to see what the exterior looks like with Brick instead of siding you can apply a class override to that Design Layer Viewport and it is done, with Layer Links you have to effect the whole file setup. If you like you could copy the Grouping of Design Layer Viewports for the floors and look at various exterior material and color studies. Not so with Layer Links.
  7. When Creating the Sheet Layer Viewport you can click on the toggle at the lower left of the "Viewport Class Properties" to "Retain Design Layer Viewport Class Overrides" and this should hold the settings for the Design Layer Viewport Settings. Make sure you have SP3
  8. Under "Stack Layer Options" you can set "Restore Original Views after Unstacking" and you should not need to align layer views.
  9. Question, how come AutoCADD or Revit cost something north of $5,000 US and Vectorworks Architect with Renderworks only cost $2,000 US. One would think by being on only one platform AutoDESK could get some level of proficiency writing code for that one environment and the price would drop? In the above applications you get 90% of the functionality with the Vectorworks offering compared to the AutoDESK offerings yet they cost almost 250% more, quite baffling? Maybe its the folks at NNA are just so much smarter than the folks at AutoDESK as they can create an application that exists on two different OS platforms with the same functionality for 1/3 the cost. Pretty amazing really.
  10. Going on the internet is a huge security hole, just cut your pipe to your computer and you have no worries.
  11. Maybe is should automatically get rid of any geometry that overlaps upon itself?
  12.    Has the world ended yet?
  13. The other acknowledged BIM solutions, though focused, have serious modeling limitations at present. The interfaces are as much if not more convoluted and complex. Much of the modeling is dissociative and non-intuitive. In other words the holy grail does not exist except as some ideal.
  14. Open discourse is the only way to discover what one needs to improve. By eliminating this topic of conversation says more about what Vectorworks can and can not do than anything they might say. This is a community board/blog not a marketing board/blog. Are any of the discussions on BIM or Teamwork to the liking of the purveyors of these boards, or are they all grimacing from the commentary? Time will tell if the well is dry.
  15. "Very simply, VW is not an intuitive piece of software to learn and use...... It also means being a tool that is written lean and presented intuitively, because that is what will make the tool usable to a greater audience in the industry." "I've had to (or need to) create replacements for practically every NNA tool, in addition to creating the ones entirely missing! Door, window, floor, beam, column, ceiling, space ? even tiling. Precast sandwich elements and stairs are on the to-do list. " "VW "flexibility" overwhelmingly means unintuitive, manual labour, workarounds, aggravation, difficult to work in teams." "In terms of enjoying life CAD has been quite a disappointment to me. I expect BIM and 3D to bring back that enjoyment and more. Graphisoft, it seems to me, is possibly the only company that seems to understand this." Seems like this thread has some consistency in thought, as some even go to the extent to create tools for how they work. Since the inception of CAD by engineers for engineers initially the interface has never been as Architects and other Creative's design, think and concieve. Most have only adopted CAD and now BIM as sheep following the Shepherding of Software Application Engineers. If an Architect were to create some BIM software(SketchUP-Form Z both were by Architects) then maybe it would be done with an interface that is more accessible. If one cannot create the content.......
  16. Eyebrow Dormer windows are very prevalent in the Shingle Style fashioned in the North East of the USA, Arts and Crafts style had some of these dormer features but usually more fluid in appearance. Brent is correct to some extent, his initial post had very limited response, and unless you are very familiar with the tools available one would think this is not possible.
  17. Depends on if the ceiling is flat, sloped or other odd shape. We use the Ceiling tool for flat ceilings, the Roof Face tool for sloped ceilings, and use the various extrude tools for other type ceilings such as Vaults or Domes, etc. With the latter you will have to add a 2d representation and either group or make a symbol out of the objects for the Hybrid representation. Then when you cut the Section Viewport you will see the section as it needs to be.
  18. That's in the Organisation window. The drop down menu is the matter being discussed in this thread. Never use the pulldown only the Nav Palette, sorry for the incorrect comment.
  19. It would seem with Batch Printing you would name the Sheet Name Layer that represents the Sheet Number then the Sheet name so when you print to PDF the PDF's have the correct sheet designation. And if you name them as such then the sheets will sort based upon the numbering and naming convention. 00 or 0 with almost all file naming with computers is almost a given.
  20. You can sort layers list alphabetically, just click on the name column and will sort up or down.
  21. 150 dpi on most printers and with most eyeballs is not any difference than 300 dpi. Random test were done at a local university to test this theory and 80% of the test subjects could not tell the difference.
  22. The question is the ceiling really that thick or is it only 5/8 thick Drywall placed on wood framing. To do this correctly you need to model each element at its correct thickness. With 2009 and the Framing tool what you propose is very easy.
  23. Nope, unless you edit the Plug-in object, which is locked.
  24. Make sure you report this as a bug and attach the files. This issue is a known bug as Ian has pointed out but could have many causes with yours being unique. First, make sure no one is moving the 2d screen origin as this will shift all your objects in all your references. Second, if you using Rotate Plan View note how you set this view and if you are saving during the plan rotation. And lastly, do as Ian suggest, update to the latest Service Pack.
  25. This is one way, set up class to have the textures then set the wall style to be by class with the Textures as shown under the Render Tab
