  1. Christiaan, I have discovered that if I attempt to update two VPs as opposed to just one then VW will hang and need to be forced quit. I had taken the files just as you had posted them but have not turned on all design layers accept for the site and a single VP will update. I have to continue to free up memory. Some of this could be the DPI of the textures you are using. If they are to high even in HL you could see issues. Will perform some other test later today. Have to continue to free RAM by the way after each VP update
  2. Christiaan, Was able to generate a section with objects beyond, so far have not had any crashes. You may not want to update them all at once, but one at a time. Have had numerous issues with updating all at once as the RAM space runs out during the process causing the crash. If you update one at a time the RAM space has time to reset before the next update. Regards, Stan
  3. Christiaan, If you can get a good render you may want to copy then convert to group so you have a 2d facsimile of the rendering. Place and scale on a design layer and you can then add other detail on top. Work around I know but gets you to deadline. Regards, Stan
  4. Christiaan, I have been able to update the Elevations but it seems some of the textures you had are now not showing up upon update. You seem to have all the DPI settings fairly high when 150 is about all that is needed for printing. Attempting to update the sections will post when I have results.
  5. We use the PIOs also, just place them in a symbol but our schedules may a bit different than yours. Regards, Stan
  6. Christiaan, As with all containers in VW the outermost class of the object if turned off will turn off all objects within the container. I assume the turning off of 2d boundary is not an option? You can set up a script to run that does this for all spaces at once. To solve the issue you present we place the objects on a class that can then be overridden in viewport with no fill and no pen making them appear off. Not sure what situation you need for this to occur. Regards, Stan
  7. Chris, Will not add to the other comments but offer up this consideration for transition to Revit. And as others have said none of them will do all that you want to do with an interface that is user friendly. We would suggest setting up a local cloud on a Windows Server with individual login and application use for Revit. You can keep your Macs and use RDC Remote Desktop Connection. You would buy a very powerful and RAM loaded Windows box to achieve this and it would not matter the speed of the Mac. A couple of firms in town here have set this up and it has allowed them to keep 4-5 year old PCs and Macs still usable when using Revit and the Cost has been substantially less than buying and upgrading hardware on a 2-3 year cycle. It also makes MacBook Airs usable as CAD stations as all the computational power is on the server along with the RAM. Users can login from their home if they have a fast enough connection, License management is easier, software upgrades are faster, files are local to the Revit application when opening. What is interesting about this thread is it was not just 25 years ago Architects for the most part used just one drawing application, pencil and paper with an interface that was very easy to learn. While capability has increased with the software and very exotic designs can be achieved with this new software not so sure they are all that different than the curves of Ronchamp or Dome in Florence. Good luck in your search for the Holy Grail!
  8. Christiaan, Another method we have used is with all doors and windows as symbols all placed in a common file with those symbols then referenced into the Building Model and referenced into the Window & Door Detail and Schedule file. An individual can then be working in both files both effecting windows and doors in all locations. The user at times will have to export a symbol they have created and then reference that symbol back from this common resource file to the working file. Also a bit inelegant but has worked for us with little issues at the moment. The only issues we have seen is naming consistency by users for symbols and folder placement for the symbols in the common resource file. Regards, Stan
  9. The only way to solve this workflow bottle neck is to split the model up with the shell of the building in one file and the interior model in another file with both referenced together. If during the process of design the model is all in one file as there is only one working on the model then we have found the best way is to save a copy of the one model file and deleting in each the Design Layers pertaining to either the exterior shell or the interior. This then creates the issue of doors, exterior and interior in two different locations and possibly with windows if the design has some interior windows. What this does is create greater complexity of file and model management as well as some graphic interface issues between exterior objects and interior objects. While possible to solve the issue not very elegant.
  10. For both windows and mac if the rendering process takes up the allotted 32bit 3gb of application space then upon export Vectorworks is out of memory to export. Not sure which version you are running but this especially effected 2011 and before. Models can get to big to render then export especially if you have a bit of geometry and high res textures. You may have to downsize the textures and look to see if you have objects where the geometry can be reduced.
  11. Try these plugins and see if they work for you.
  12. Q, Upon import you can have it convert colors from DWG to line weights. Firms that use AutoCADD usually map the Colors to Line Wieghts by their layers which are VW classes. You need to at least know for the file to be imported if they had specific line weights they were using per color. You can set this up as a import setting so that every time you receive a file from the same group you do not have to repeat the translation. This is not obvious but is in the custom settings configuration upon the import. Best of luck, Stan
  13. Christiaan, Under Line Rendering Options for HL if you turn off intersecting lines these line may go away. You can also change the smoothing angle to 1 degree which may make this line go away. We are not seeing this line as your image depicts. By now you are most likely having a brew at the pub.
  14. Christiaan, If parity is the norm then NNA should add Image, Record Format, Renderworks Textures, Text Styles, and Tiles along with Renderworks Styles to share. Guess the board is not keeping up with the App.
  15. The forum for Renderworks already established would seem to be the location for discussions on Rendering? Users would just attach images to there post and others could view? Dan Jansenson has an excellent book on Renderworks and all the tips and tricks one needs to know to create renderings in Vectorworks.
  16. There are presets for this type of rendering in 2012. See attached images. In viewports you can also use Texture Overrides if you want it to look like really cardboard to keep all the textures and just use Realistic Rendering.
  17. Christiaan, Those are Moire patterns and the DPI of the viewport effects these not the rendering modes. You need to up the DPI of the Sheet Layer Viewport and they should go away.
  18. If you need some brick texture images here is a link. http://www.hansonbrick.com/english/login.php
  19. Christiaan, If you are using the procedural shader as opposed to an image shader than you cannot export the texture as an image directly. The only way is to create a panel in front elevation, render, then save as image. If you are using an image shader than this should be added as a image texture which can then be saved off to your desktop. You would navigate to that texture in the RB then Extract Image(s) Opens the Browse for Folder (Windows) or Export Image File (Macintosh) dialog box to save a .png file extracted from the selected resource To extract images from all image-based textures, Renderworks backgrounds, and image resources in the current document, execute this command with no resources selected. Then you can edit as you need in your fav image editor
  20. Christiann, Would be nice if you could choose to sort by list header up or down just like in Finder or any other modern list view.
  21. In Revit (Families) are the same as VW symbols that have PIO within them. In ArchiCAD (Library Objects) are the same as VW symbols. The difference being the method by which to view and or manipulate these object types. Interface for editing in all is lacking. In 2012 VW the user can edit in place in relation to other objects. Chris, your last point is a recurring request by our office that would expand the objects we can create greatly.
  22. This is a known bug with Vectorworks 2011 whereby Symbols in working in a file may at times break this link and have the symbol as within the file. If you have not already you may consider upgrading to 2012 as this issue has been fixed. Regards
  23. Christiaan, Stories can overlap based upon the elevation settings. The real reason for stories has to do with the new associative data fields for walls, stairs, etc. allowing them to move in concert with a change in the overall story setting. All the sub layers of the story are set in relation to the story setting. Yes, you could do all this with to old method but you would have to adjust each and everyone, this speeds things up a bit. The settings to the wall could also be set to adjust accordingly but the new story feature gives you finer grain control. Could this have been better, yes, we would have preferred that this was all done directly and interactively with a modeling window Graphic control rather than the dialog settings. Depending on how much a user actually models to generate the 2d representations of elevations, building sections and wall sections this new feature will have varying levels of usefulness. Regards, Stan
