  1. I have a problem with creating and editing window schedules: whereas the default contents in my data folder should show a healthy list of different schedules, the only ones I see in my VA records and schedules are two pitiful Equipment and Plumbing schedules... I tried re-installing but the same limited info is available. and this is throughout the office machines! Can anyone help? are these default schedules available to download? thanks MAnfredi
  2. thanks Jeffrey, I only saw your reply today; I'm downloading the material and we'll study it in the office. It's now become quite urgent to get to grips with this, so if we still can't make heads or tails out of it I'll be hassling this forum subsection in the near future again.
  3. < OSX is apparently trying to resolve a "save as " path conflict and defaulting to a safe 'save as' > ~User ...to avoid data loss ... with the idea that sooner or later the ~User will notice the problem and freak-out ... : )> Thanks Islandmon, that's what I also figured in my barely adequate knowledge of computers, is there a way to educate it back?
  4. I did that but it seems to ignore it
  5. Dear Tech Forum, We're working on VWA'08+RW on a number of machines, with Leopard and Tiger. Up until very recently we had no problem backing our my VWA files, we just set once the preferences that backed onto only one file in a VW backup folder in the same location as the original file. As of lately (I can't be entirely sure this started since Leopard, since we have the same problem on the Tiger-operating machine), even after re-setting these preferences, VW (on all machines) backs up to the main disk and a new copy every 5 minutes (!) building up an inordinate amount of junk space... Has anyone ever come across this before? I'd like things to go back to the way they were before, for the sake of space and ease of use of an otherwise very useful file backup system I'd appreciate the help Manfredi
  6. I've been trawling through the user's guide, the companion and other third party manuals, but it still isn't any clearer to me: is there a simple and clear explanation of how to set up a project on a workgroup? What exactly is the correlation between design and sheet layers when dealing with a workgroup? Sorry if this may seem a very basic question for many, but I need to master this quite urgently and I'd appreciate any suggestion to find the right direction, Thanks
  7. better still... ungrouping a mansard produces neatly shaped walls and roof faces! I tried the other class-editing option, in itself quite good, but the freedom of manipulation of ungrouping is much more useful in this case.
  8. thanks Jonathan and Wes, I'll try both options and then see how it works best. Re the second part of my question, I suppose by ungrouping I can probably get rid of the mansard gables that are currently obscuring my door in the wall between the two mansards...
  9. Hello Tech forum, A simple query: is it possible to apply a different texture to a dormer or mansard (shed type roof on VWA) in a roof? I'm adding a metal-clad mansard to a slate covered roof, but I can't seem to separate the two. Do I have to split the roof in two? While I'm here, is there a way of showing a door between two mansards, e.g.: I have two interconnecting mansards with a wall between them (stairs hall to loft), but the door in my wall shows only partially because the mansard construction gable covers it up... Thank you
  10. the file is about 6.4Mb, I'm trying to print 12 sheets and the printer model is an epson stylus photo 1290
  11. Hello, I've encounterd recently the following problem: every time I try to batch print on my epson printer, the printer hangs. Since I have previously been able to batch print, and I haven't changed neither the computer or the printer, is it a bug with VW12.5etc or with the Apple gimp driver? has anyone else encountere similar problems? thanks
  12. Willofmaine, I had exactly the same problem, any rendering - but especially all section viewport advanced visualisation - crashed on me. After countless hours of trial and error (see a few posts ago) I found out that the problem is - generally - a staircase! Whether it's threaded through a few floors or not, the staircase, if in any way altered (eg. mirrored etc...) will crash everything. The solution is to re-draw it. good luck!
  13. Ok, islandmon, Pete and whoever else is out there, After innumerable trials and countless tribulations, I found out where the glitch is, it's not memory or classes, but it's the two little intra-layer staircases that go up to the middle building from the lower. Funny, because I have two more staircases (one internal and one external) from the middle building to the top one. As soon as I can waste any more time on it I'll try re-creating the stairs (!?) and see if it still crashes. PS allow me a little rant on the stairs tool: the red differentiation between sections you are editing is gone and that's a pity, the arrow is not editable (i.e. 45?) and it does not stop at the stairs break but carries through in broken line to the next floor. The latter is very annoying when you have a staircase broken at lower floor and then you have a retaining wall supporting the next floor, as the arrow just shots through and is not the way it would be drawn normally... VWA is great and I've been with it for years, but if availing of all these wonderful new features means loosing the freedom and flexibility and compromising your own drawing standards, then excuse me but I thought that was just the beauty about VW, fighting the Autocad engendered standardisation and subsequent architectural banalisation.
  14. thanks islandmon, I just checked the mail now, on my way to bed, so I'll try it tomorrow and run a few purges... By the way, I tried something else earlier on: lifted all the 3D buildings and the site, put them on new layers on a new file and the model rendered and worked for a little while, until I tried to get a viewport section. Then it crashed, so it might well be a corrupted something, but not a symbol, because I'm only using plugin windows and doors. Thank you and wish me luck, I'll let you know if it works
  15. I'm having a problem regarding stack layers and visualisation. Up until yesterday, on one particular file which has three buildings along a DTM generated slope I was able to see various views, work in 3D and see all the relative elevations and sections. As at today, as soon as I ask it to stack the layers and do any rendering but wireframe, it crashes... I've tried a few permutations, such as making a new file with even more accurate layer heights, different renderings, reverted to the original Workspace and I've done a couple of rain dances. All to no avail, I found out that the only way I can get it ot render (a misery Open GL) is by asking the program to show the DTM and one building at a time. Furthermore, when I go to update the sections and elevations that I did yesterday the program crashes, as it does when I ask it to do a new section viewport (so it's not just a problem with Renderworks). Oh, I've also tried to link the layers instead of stacking them and it just crashes everything. So much for BiM! Anyone ever had this problem? You can all understand how serious it is, as I'm talking about the possibility of having lost all my sections and elevations - ready to go for planning
  16. that's great, thanks. I'll try my making own settings
  17. Thanks Katie, But I had done all those things, and I tried printing with either of the dialog options on/off, and the one page option did not work... I even checked the poage setup in the sheet layer to be A3, but as I said the only one that worked was re-adjusting the preferences, and fortunately the A1 comes out ok. I hope I won't have any further problems, although I suspect having my default printing size at A3 will cause problems for all other applications thank you and please let me know if there are other ways around this Manfredi
  18. Here's a problem I've encountered recently: exporting (or printing to a pdf file) an A3 drawing gave me all sorts of problems, because it reduced everything to 71% (basically to A4). After wasting a lot of time I found out that it was reverting to my computer's basic paper settings (in the preferences), which were set to A4. By changing my default paper size for the iMac to A3, the problem was corrected. Nothing of the sort happened when I exported an A1 pdf. Anyone ever had the same problem? anyone know why the VWA exporter likes A1s and becomes fussy with smaller sizes?
  19. I find myself using quite often the rather powerful stairs tool, however I have 3 queries regarding both the 2D and 3D display of a staircase, and I'm sure I'm not using the tool properly. My first 2 questions regard the 2D representation of a staircase: every time I try to draw the arrow in a staircase, be it on a straight, dogleg or spiral, the arrow starts way beyond the 2D representation itself, and makes it quite a large plug-in object on the screen. Is there a way of controlling the length of this arrow? Secondly, is there a way of showing the stairs break at 45? - i.e. as I would show it normally if I was drawing it by hand? Regarding the 3D, it is not entirely clear how to link a staircase through two floors, and have it show the lower break on - say the GF - and the upper break on the 1F Thanks to whoever can solve these hopefully easy queries
  20. I'm trying to make shadow analyses and diagrams, but it's near impossible with VWA 12 - I'm willing to get a plug-in like Renderworks etc... but it seems to me from the Help that the Shadow Analysis command (exactly what I need) works with Landmark only, and we hardly do any Landscape Architecture. What should I get? Thanks
