  1. I haven't moved anything from it's default location (as installed). Here's the result of the search for stray VW copies:
  2. I've been hunting for this as well...
  3. I've had no luck in getting the Quicklook function to work. I opened an existing .VWX file, saved as a new file by appending a lowercase "a" onto the filename, then closed the file. Checked for a Quicklook preview in Finder. Nope. Quit VW - still no. Tried shutting down the computer, and still nothing happens when highlighting the file and hitting the space bar. Hmmm. Could this be a permisssions issue? I do not have admin privileges on this account.

    Export dxf

There are 2 different options for DXF export - Text and Binary. Have you tried them both? The laser shop I use can't read the Binary ones, but has no problems with those exported with the Text setting.
  5. Do I need to re-save my older files in order to get the Quicklook preview? I have restarted my machine.
  6. In the View Bar, class names reflect the nested state of my classes. In the Navigation palette, it is a flat list. It would be nice if the Navigation palette could have disclosure triangles and a hierarchical list as well.
  7. I'm finding snapping to be almost unusable in 3d views - even after having placed 3d loci in orthogonal views. Could we have snap points that function accurately in 3d space, like SketchUp and FormZ? Please?
  8. A quick word of caution - I had several instances of subcontractors and engineers contacting me with clarity issues when I used "hand-lettered" fonts on my CDs. I've since stopped using them and switched to a clean, easy-to-decipher font - helvetica.
  9. When using the Move by Points tool, I can use the spacebar to pan after selecting the first point, but when I pan with the Middle Mouse Button, it cancels the move operation. This is with a Wacom tablet and stylus, with one of the pen rocker buttons set to emulate MMB.
  10. Applications>VectorWorks 2008>VWHelp>Additional Documentation>VectorWorks_2008.PDF It's in the Introduction, "Additional Key Functionality", Page 21.
  11. Maybe I'm just a glass-half-full kinda guy, but it seems there's been a deluge of negative comments re 2008. My first impressions have been anything but. Some observations: The interface just feels more refined and less jarring on OSX. Not so Windowzy, and much easier on the eyes. The selection highlighting is a very welcome addition - it does beg the question as to why it took so long to show up. Plus, I'm not sure I dig on the way the selection "throbs" when my cursor leaves the drawing window - is there away to disable this? (edit: Just noticed the "throbbing" is gone this morning after re-opening VW; has anyone else seen this? Perhaps it is due to changing to "hardware accelerated 2d navigation" in the prefs without subsequently re-launching?)(EDIT - found the setting in the Prefs that controls this behavior.) The "Move by Points" tool is fantastic, as is the Symmetric by Distance scaling. The regrouped mode bar makes much more sense now as well. I don't feel like I have to edit the standard workspace to make it work as advertised. I'm also loving the Heads-Up Display feature. Making the selection handles NOT DISPLAY when interactive scaling is disabled is brilliant - readily apparent visual feedback as to the tool's state should be implemented on every multi-mode tool. The SpaceNavigator... works. The default settings are WAY too slow and the axes of rotation are bassackwards. I've added VW to the applications in the device's prefs and mucked about with the settings to get some improvements, but it is still very clunky and not nearly as smooth and flawless as working in SketchUp. Zooming is especially frustrating - slow, jerky, and not centered on the selected object. It would also be very helpful to be able to use it in Top/Plan for simple zooming and panning when working strictly in 2d. Hopefully more work can be put into this over time. From the .PDF Manual: "Shift - Rotates certain 2D objects (such as rectangles, rounded rectangles, ovals, bitmaps, and PICT images) with the 2D Selection tool at the object?s selection handles". I am unable to make this work. Not sure if I would use it if I could, but I'd like to try it out. Overall, I'm impressed with the polish and usability that has been added. Thanks for your efforts! ps I've been hammering the fillet tool all morning, and have yet to have a failure. Most definitely not "broken", and not "buggy" either, Robert.
  12. Katie - thanks for the information. Disk space is getting a little tight on my laptop ( you, iTunes!...) so I think one version of VW should be enough. I got a call from Sales 30 seconds after I posted - but thanks for offering to help.
  13. Sorry if this has been addressed before - can/should I uninstall VW 12.5.2 before I install 2008? The installation ReadMe states: "VectorWorks 2008 installs in a separate directory from previous VectorWorks when installing from the DVD. If you specify an existing installation when installing, VectorWorks files in that location will be overwritten as appropriate to accomplish the addition of a new module or an online update. While files in this location rarely should be modified by the user, you should make sure your files are backed up before re-installing over an existing VectorWorks." Does this mean that after installing the Upgrade, I will then have two versions of VW on my machine? ps - The upgrade package I received is for Windows, and I'm on Mac. I've sent an email to my account rep about being issued a Mac serial number, but have yet to hear back. Could someone at NNA expedite this for me, or do I need make a telephone call?
  14. I haven't. Looks pretty nice, though - I'm leery of the button placement. Seems like the controller knob is placed right in the way for ergonomic use of the buttons, but that's just conjecture on my part.
  15. This is actually my second SpaceNavigator; the first time I tried it out, my muscle memory balked at losing the left hand for navigation modifiers and other hotkeys - so I returned it. Then my doctor "suggested" I find a way to unburden my right hand somewhat while working at the computer (or face surgery on my right shoulder), so I bought one again and have forced myself to get acquainted with it. It works beautifully in SketchUp, especially with the two buttons set to "Zoom Extents" and "Zoom Selected". I'm hoping it works for 2d panning and zooming in VW - I have yet to crack the nut of 3d in it to this point. There is a Mac shareware program called Controllermate that allows you to program any HID device to do pretty much anything you want - so that could be a solution for the lack of multi-button support, Christaan (if you have the time to mess with it, that is).
  16. -bump- islandmon - I could really use an update on this. Is this script still actively being developed?
  17. OK, thanks Katie. It would be nice for those of us that DO have fast connections to opt-in for downloadable upgrades. Luxology (modo's devs) encourage bittorent use for their product downloads - and the video tutorials weigh in at over a Gig.
  18. My apologies for the poor choice of words. To a non-engineer, "broken" means "doesn't work right". Can I get an answer to my initial inquiry? Will the bug fix that has been implemented in the fillet tool for the 2008 release propogate in some meaningful way to a service release for VW 12.x, or is the only way to get the fix to purchase the upgrade? I'm only trying to weigh the ROI for my personal needs in regards to upgrading, not start a Petri-style pi$$ing contest.
  19. Yes, Robert, I am talking about you. And, in an email to me dated June 26 of this year, you said the following: >Mark, your particular file poses some interesting issues for VectorWorks and >how it deals with arc-smoothed polyline files. It's clear from the way >you've described your problems online that you've experimented fairly >thoroughly with the workflow to accomplish what you want, and in the doing >you've hit on a precision bug (the one that is causing your large-radius >arcs to vanish). >As it turns out, this precision bug has already been fixed in an upcoming >release, but that does you no good, because the upcoming release is >available only to official beta-testers. The bug is that, when filleting a >very large-radius arc with a small-radius arc, the fillet tool gets confused >and deletes the wrong portion of the large arc. As you probably have seen, >it doesn't happen on all vertices, only some. >So let's try and work through a process that will solve your problem. >1. If you have it on, turn off "zoom line thickness" preference in the >Display tab of VectorWorks preferences. (Thick line display can mask the >little pieces you'll need to delete in step 3 below.) >2. Use the Fillet tool in the "trim-extend" mode to fillet all the corners >possible (i.e. that don't cause the large-radius arcs to disappear.) When >you have a corner that causes an arc to disappear, simply undo and make note >of that corner (maybe circle it in red -- you'll come back to it.) But do as >many corners as possible using the "trim-extend" mode, which is the fastest. >3. Now change the Fillet tool to the "split" mode (the second option in the >mode bar). Do the red-circled vertices and manually delete the "tails". >(You'll have to zoom 'way in for obtuse angles.) >4. Select everything and compose. (Delete any temporary markings first.) >Now you should have shapes that will work with your cutter. I can discuss >with you later (should you be interested) more about the idiosyncrasies of >VectorWorks polylines and why you were seeing changes in shapes earlier. But >for now, I hope this works for you. >Sorry about the fillet bug, as I say it's already fixed for the next major >release. I think that last line eminently qualifies as a bug confirmation. I would also advise you to be aware of the tone of your reply, Robert. Implying that I am a liar is NOT "Polite and Professional". Thanks for any futher clarifications you can provide regarding my question.
  20. Robert has confirmed that the fillet tool in VW 12.5 is broken. Will there be a fix offered for those that choose not to upgrade to 2008? Or does a working fillet tool cost us $335?
  21. Will there eventually be an option to buy the upgrade as a download-only product? I really have no use for another giant box to take up space on my bookshelf - not to mention the environmental impact of said box, plus that of the manual, the enormous carbon cost in shipping the thing, etc.
  22. Will the Navigation palette be added to Fundamentals? Are the issues with the Fillet tool fixed?
