  1. Sarah - thanks for the advice and direction. It sounds like I would get lost pretty quickly, but I'll still give it a shot. It sounds like a 'Tangent Vector' node is something that should be added to Marionette?
  2. Mark - thanks for your reply. Are you saying that just installing scipy will allow us to work with individual components of an image, or is there some core functionality that needs to be added to Vectorworks for this to work (like UV mapping)? Thanks.
  3. @sbarrett - before I saw your post, I was attempting to try and create a cosine wave in Marionette, having been inspired by this Grasshopper tutorial on making a parametric brick wall. Does it seem like something like this would be possible in Marionette, using your file as a starting point? Thanks.
  4. Thanks JimW. Your tip ^^^ would be useful to include in the online help file section about Optimizing Rendering Performance
  5. Mike - yeah I also read over at the gutenprint mail-list that they were working on a fix which should be available soon.
  6. JimW - thanks for the exteriors tip on using grass with AO, not indirect. That's very good to know. So if you were going to do an interior with a thick shag rug, could you use grass for the rug with indirect lighting and accept the slow render time, or would you be better off with displacement and indirect lighting? Thanks.
  7. @taoist: The second thread I linked had the following quote and movie link from Pat Stanford on how to make a window opening that spans two floors:
  8. Don't get me wrong, I completely agree that vertically stacked wall components need to be implemented, but I think you might be overstating the case just a bit. I'm not sure what you mean by 'planes and solids', but currently the best work-around involves stacking two wall assemblies on top of each other. It's not ideal, but it's what we have to work with. Here's the most recent thread where this subject was discussed with input from Vectorworks' Wes Gardner: two wall types, same wall
  9. Question 1: No, see recently updated, 12-year-old thread Vertically compound walls Question 2: The Vw2016 online help has a list of all the new features & changes in Vw2016. But since you're coming from Vw2013, also take a look at the new features in Vw2015 online help : New Features HTH.
  10. @zoomer : Have you tried the YouTube app on your iPad? It has black borders if the videos are not full-screen; I find it works much better than viewing in a browser. The Vectorworks YouTube channel has the videos organized by Playlist, which personally I find easier to navigate than the VSS videos.
  11. In OS X 10.10 Yosemite, Apple tightened the security access to the printing subsystem (also known as 'Sandboxing') so there is a chance that your failed printer drivers might be related to that change. Additionally you might have luck using OS X's built-in CUPS printing, but it may also restricted by Sandboxing. You might be able to find a printer driver for your legacy printer on this website: OpenPrinting : Printer List The web interface for CUPS is turned off by default in 10.8 and beyond. To enable it enter the following in terminal: cupsctl WebInterface=yes Then to access CUPS, direct your browser to http://localhost:631/ If you have or can find a printer driver for 10.9 on HP's website, the driver is not signed for Yosemite so it may get blocked by the Gatekeeper. The 'secret password' to get past the Gatekeeper is to hold down the Control key and click on the installer. A pop-up menu will appear and select 'Open', and you'll be allowed to install the driver. HTH.
  12. @JimW - on your Koosh ball, does using the grass shader considerably slow down the rendering speed? Is the performance slowdown comparable to what you get when using displacement textures? thanks.
  13. This always happens the first time you click the 'Bug Submit' link, it will work if you click on it a second time.
  14. Mark - would it be possible with added Python libraries to create a Marionette node that functions similarly to Grasshopper's 'Image Sampler' node? Something that could create 2D surface patterns by sampling a reference image: designcoding :: Facade Study – Bitmap Pattern designcoding :: Image Sampler Revisited Thanks.
  15. Mark - Thanks for adding the external path to Python, that seems like a much safer, long-term solution.
  16. Since there are almost zero tutorials on Marionette (versus literally thousands for Grasshopper and Dynamo), I think it would be extremely helpful if training videos were put up on YouTube that walked us step-by-step through how to make a Marionette object.
  17. I totally agree. I thought that Service Select members received special access to additional training webinars, but it appears that most of the VSS videos are also on YouTube, and like you said, there aren't very many recent ones. The most recent VSS 'Tips by Guest Presenters and Vectorworks Power Users' webinar is from version 2014, which is now two product cycles ago. The most recent VSS How-To video is also from Vw2014. There's nothing from Vw2015, and here we are now on Vw2016.
  18. Sarah: thanks for sharing this. Coincidentally, last week I thought I'd start with something 'simple' and try to make a sine wave in Marionette. (I had seen several Grasshopper tutorials on it, and it didn't seem overly complicated). Now that I see your Marionette example — wow — was I wrong. I wish I could create something with this sine wave object, but lacking even a basic understanding of Marionette I wouldn't even know where to begin.
  19. @Dave Donley - so are you saying that the Vw2016 RW camera now uses Cinema4D's Physical Camera and that using real shutter speed and exposure settings will accurately represent real-world photometrics? That would be great if it's true.
  20. If you're referring to Callouts, this is already possible. On the Callout preferences under 'Horizontal Position' settings, change it from 'Auto' to either 'Left' or 'Right' and you can drag the leader back on itself like your image.
  21. @DCapp: The KB article linked by JimW at that post doesn't say to reinstall, it's about resetting your preferences. Did you try the steps in the last post in that thread? If the steps outlined in that thread don't work for you, then you might need to contact Tech Support for assistance.
  22. @DomC: I agree completely. Copying and pasting folders inside of application packages makes me very nervous. @Vectorworks: This does not seem like the safest system for users to install additional Python packages. Would it be possbile for Vectorworks to have a symbolic link inside the Vectorworks application package which soft linked to the user's Python installation folder which is outside of Vectorworks?
  23. JimW - thanks for the reply. I kind of figured that it was an OS limitation but I had to ask.
  24. @DomC - thanks for uploading the new version. Out of curiosity, I tried changing the control geometry to a NURBS surface to see if it would work on a 3d surface, but it didn't seem to like it. Do you know if this Marionette object could be made to work on a non-flat or sloping 3d surface? Thanks.
  25. Since installing Vw2016, the Mac OS X Finder Icon now shows all Vectorworks files as Vw2016 version with the 'red icon' - regardless of what version they were saved in. The Finder 'Get Info' on a Vw2015 file does not tell me that it is a Vw2015 file but only says 'Open with Vectorworks 2016 (default)'. There is no way to know that it is in fact a Vw2015 file. I don't know whether it's an Apple or Vectorworks issue, but it makes it a not-much-fun guessing game about which Vw version a file was created in.
