  1. Thanks to both Pete and Petri for responses. Re Pete's comment, when I purchased INFO EDITOR, I learned from the author that VW 12 no longer utilizes records for spreadsheets (THIS OUGHT TO HAVE BEEN IN BOLD PRINT VW!!!) and further, that INFO EDITOR does not work when an item has a record on the Mac. I ought to get credit for that one as it took me four hours to learn it and let the author know. The reason for no records has something to do with preference sets. Apparently when you migrate a preference set from an earlier version, record data became uncontrollably convoluted so VW abandoned this approach. You will note that windows and doors in VW 12 are plug-ins editable from the OBJECT INFO PALETTE. I am also wondering how to (easily) create an association between an ID LABEL and a spreadhseet column for example using a USER DEFINED label. This has something to do with the formulas you can read in the DATABASE HEADER in any spreadsheet!?
  2. Thanks Pete, but I am referring to the workspaces where the item STACK LAYERS is "no longer available, do you want to save the workspace anyway?"
  3. Considering that few people use these puppies, there are few responses to questions. This ought to be an indication to VW that there is a level of complexity that needs further simplification. I purchased INFO EDITOR to help, and it does indeed solve several problems but the following questions remain. Please keep in mind that most VW users are USERS and not programmers and the language of code and spreadsheet syntax is very difficult to negotiate. DATABASE HEADERS - when these are open and a single item is selected, a small formula is evident such as =Door(UserFld1). This tells VW where to look for associative information. Previously (pre v. 12.0) VW used Records and now schedules are composed of Plug-in objects so records cause spreadhseets and INFO EDITOR TO NOT WORK properly (MAC). For those that use WINDOOR, these must be ungrouped and the ID LABEL tool utilized because Windoor objects defaults to records! The only way therefore to add an object to a spreadsheet (in my world) is to get the formula correct and to use the ID Label Tool to create a marker that the spreadhseet will recognize. Adding individual data ought to take minutes but it takes hours at times.... Argggh! FORMULAS - where are these published please? The User guide is useless for people who do not speak that language. INFO EDITOR - There ought to be a search command that allows the selection of a header to locate the corresponding column. I have found myself searching for corresponding formulas and never figuring out which column to enter the data. There are at least 100 of these. ADDING DATA - the User guide suggests that a single item can be added to a spreadhseet, but I have found that User Fields that are not prestructured, do not recognize data period. Whatever ignorance is discovered in these questions are precisely the questions. Exporting to EXCEL is not an option because the format is lost. Thanks for any input.
  4. Workspaces.....why does the STACK LAYERS command constantly become unavailable? I notice someone else is having this problem as well...
  5. If you find an answer to this question please let me know. This is why I am visiting today. Even when I delete and add it back it still is 'no longer avialable'. Keep in touch - Pbody.B2L@verizon.net.
  6. Perti you lost me. What is the "said column"? I assumed previously you meant the new column or the 'said' column. I am not sure this is what you are saying now. FYI, the =1 in the header line of the new column is suddenly (almost) working. Reads a total of 6 doors correctly (small cottage), but only in the header, and 1 for each door below. Using SUM produces the number 1 in a single line below the header (consolidates 6 doors / 3 types into 1)! I have tried a number of criteria formats with no luck. I am wondering which aspect my records are being read. Maybe I can add information to the record to create a suitable definition that '=1' can understand!!!? Thanks again...
  7. I quoted myself. How on Earth....?
  8. Petri thanks for the input. No success as yet. To be specific, in the first two colums are door designations. Column one D-, Second column 01 for example. In the case of mulitple doors of a single door type, there are several lines in the worksheet which read D-01, because every door has a record, which is what I am seeking to resolve. I am aware that using the sum in the number (01 column) will consolidate all of the same doors designations into a single line. This is why I wish to create another column that counts these adding a third column which states 4 for example indicating that there are four (01) doors. Using your suggestion in the adjacent column I called COUNT, the result is a single line where all of the doors are consolidated n omatter the designation. I sorted by choosing the radio button TYPE from the PASTE CRITERIA pulldown. I realize that the doors and windows are differentiated by various sizes and features within their records, but NOT by type. For example, there might be more than one size of casement window, so type would consolidtae all casements whether there are muntins, various thicknesses etc.. I wish to differentiate the ID number criteria (01 etc.) and the format evades me. There is no criteria for ID# in the pulldown! Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!
  9. No problem Darrell. Thanks for the roadmap... I am still experiencing some weirdness such as the SUM consolidates but the ASCENDING ORDER organizes all but two of the records which remain out of order. I am also trying to figure out how to write a formula that counts the number of doors that are of the same type. Vectorworks explains the formulas generally but not how to use them. Reminds me of college physics!
  10. Eureka, turn on the DATABASE HEADERS and selct a ROW header, not a COLUMN header and drag the little icons to the DATABASE HEADER! It worked...I get to sleep tonight! Thanks for the nudge...
  11. Thanks, I am aware of this and was expecting this response, thouigh hoping for another. Thank you for your response yet I wish to be more specific. What if these icons (all three of them descending, ascending and SUM) are greyed and cannot be selected even though there are about ten sub-rows below the database header row? That is my situation.....at 1 AM with an 11 AM meeting! I cannot select individual cells either. There must be setting that I am not aware of?
  12. It appears that not too many VW users are using worksheets....that's too bad for me because I have a question. When recalculating the list, it found all of the records but it placed them all in a haphazard order. I am having a difficult time figuring out how to get them to follow the sequence starting with D-1, D-2 etc.. If anyone has a clear description about how to do this, it would be appreciated.
  13. I have had problems with schedules identifying doors and windows that are symbols. I have had schedules ignore records embedded in symbols altogether.
  14. Yes, I have seen this $180.00 solution that includes butt joint windows etc.! Have to weigh the value of my need against the cost of the solution with that one. Thanks for the reminder.
  15. Using the custom swing option does not give the option for an XXXX with all panels opened to one side. Also, the bi-fold bi-part option places the opened panels on opposite sides. I am seeking an option where all four panels are slid over to one side. Maybe Nana is not used enough to warrant this option but I would like to know if a solution for this door type is avialable. And by the way VW, windows (PIO) have a custom sash option so why doesn't the door (PIO) include a custom leaf option? This could include an offset top/bottom pin hinge as well.
  16. Greetings Islandmon and thanks for the response. Imagine a wall that tapers from 6" at the base to 12" at the top and is not shaped like a rectangle in elevation (polygon). Now imagine creating a room with four of those that attach accurately where the edges intersect. The object you created is very cool and I know how to do that. I cannot determine how to join irregular planar surfaces though as described above. Any clue about seating layouts? Raising them up causes a working plane shift that is not relative to the ground plane. Thanks agan, Blink
  17. Utilizing 0.00 or a user defined level, it would be very useful to see a reference height for any object in a drawing. This could include the height at bottom or top similar to window and door PIOs. Better yet, allow the user to select all the objects in one list relative to each other. Why? Object creation defaults to 0.00 (ground) so moving objects is constantly required and precision gets difficult and annoying when there are many objects in a composition. Objects could have names and be turned on and off individually like Form Z for example (class independent). I am aware this exists for level flags, but I want the object to tell me where it is, not the flag.
  18. Having exhausted what I know about VW, user for about eight years thus far, I assume that wall manipulation is simply not possible in VW besides using the 3D move tool to change the peak height! OK, I have extruded vertically, extruded along paths, multiple extruded, extruded extruded, converted extrudes to meshes, 3D polys and nurbs which are essentially collections of 3D polys. I have attemped to stretch extrusions resulting in unresolved connections where they overlap and finally, I have spent hours creating complicated working plane alignments and adding and intersecting solids all of which DO NOT WORK. The world is not longer symmetrical and I live in LA (my clients want crooked things here you to hell Frank Ghery!). To be able to truly stretch a 3D vertex and have the snap actually work in this mode! Why why why? Must I admit that VW is not perfect?
  19. Use a line as an offset that crosses through the wall thickness. Insert the window or door. Drag the door to the offset either to the outside of the jam for the R.O. or the inside for clear opening. Oops, forth step, delete the line. Setting up the offset before the insertion take several steps to! A dimension can be used to snap to as well.
  20. Though many months late, many you did not delete the original 2D polygons, and these were being selected as part of the source data? The creation of source data is a separate step between the layout and the creation of the site model epending on which path you take. Re tech support, return calls are difficult for a company that is growing as fast as NNA (a good thing). Responding to posts on this tech board is extraordinary, comparable to an architect sending one page responses to resume applicants when their is normally silence. ASk for a personal e-mail once a phone call gets through and you will always get your answer. Whomever calls v.12 an ineffective manual must be an Auocad user! the veru quality that makes VW so exceptional is the varied approaches to desired results. It is not formulaic like Autocad and others. The manual appropriately points you in the right direction and then trial and error sorts it out. This tech board forms part of their technical support and it works very very well, especially the search mode which accesses archive issues. I always find my answers here and generally do not need direct contact. To each their own, but maybe the complainers are not reading enough.
