  1. I'd like to hear from various users your technique when working with dormer windows. A window symbol is required to create a dormer which will no longer show up on the window schedule because it's now a symbol. I need a window showing on the floor plan and the schedule so I insert a "real" window into the wall which solves the problem but creates another. Now when I create a rendered perspective there are two dormer windows overlaping each other height wise as they never seem to line up. How do the rest of you work this?
  2. I assume your picking the exterior walls when creating your roof. Instead, try drawing a polygon by snapping to the wall corners making sure it closes. With the polygon picked, run the create roof command.
  3. Can the corners be radiused without ungrouping the entity or is it just better to use a countertop? How difficult would it be to add this function to the OIP?
  4. I,ve upgraded to VW's 2009 and all I can say is WOW! No problems at all so far. Many improvements I can really use and the rendering is fast. Having used VW's for years, I believe that most problems can be traced to the video card and it's driver. Spend the money and make sure the video card, processor and operating system are compatible with lots of memory. 5. I am using VW12.5 until monday when I expect to have my update to VW2009. Jeffrey, thanks for your help, but, do you mean that this has not been fixed in VW2009? I got around it by creating a space in a new temporary file and importing the worksheet into my drawing.
  6. After editing a wall finish description the link to the finish schedule in VW's default folder becomes "lost", all of the drop down pick boxes are empty. What am I doing wrong or is this another BUG!
  7. Could the HARDWARE ACCELERATION OPTION in preferences have anything to do with this. I posted a question regarding this option a few weeks ago but received no comments. I presently use VW12 and am updating to VW2009 soon. When this option is enabled, which, by the way is always on in VW2009, zooming and panning become jerky and crashes occur now and then. VW's runs much smoother with this option turned off. So, a question for all of you computer savey users, what exactly does hardware acceleration do and why does it cause crashes?
  8. With "Hardware accelerated 2D navigation" enabled in VW's preferences, my computer locks up in 3D views. I am presently using VW12 and upgrading to VW2009 which I have yet to install. I'm told that this option is enabled by default in VW2009 and does not appear in the preferences if one wishes to disable the function. I do not see the benefits of this option and would prefer to turn it off. Is it possible to do so in VW2009 or has this version solve the issue? 9. Gentlemen: Thank all of you very much, it was the solid fill. Right in front of me the whole time!
  10. Hello Mattc, firstly, it's called the OIP (object information palette)not IOP and yes I've done that and more. I'm going to update to VW's 2010 in the fall assuming they have these *^$%*BUGS worked out. I'm committed to VW's because I've spent years learning their software and have no intention of learning another. In all fairness though, their software is all I could ask for except for the BUGS!

    DTM

Why are my DTM renderings patchy? I apply a natural grass turf texture and there are large open areas of gray. Also, is there a big improvement regarding DTM from VW12 to VW2009 and where can I find detailed literature or videos on VW's DTM? VW12, Win XP Intel Core 2 Quad, 4GB RAM ATI Radeon 4850x2 2GB Video Card
  12. I know one can change the drawing units to inches when working with schedules but is there a way to keep the finish schedule in inches when drawing units are changed back to feet & inches?
  13. Near the top left corner is a small box which reads "enable interactive scaling mode" when you move your mouse over it. Click on it to turn it on or off. Draw a rectangle and grab a corner in both on and off mode and you'll see what it does. Works with lines and other entities also.
  14. The next time I purchase a new computer I'm going to look at workstations as opposed to desktops. HP offers both and can probably answer a lot of questions regarding CAD software requirements. I've put off upgrading from VW 12 to 2009 because I anticipated all of the above.
  15. Double click on the wall in a perspective view, grab one of the blue dots and drag it where you need it. You may need to turn on your scale option.
  16. I've discovered that the space tool does have a "built in work around" for this problem. Uncheck the CALC DIM option and simply reverse the dimensions in the two previously grayed out windows, and of course, it's necessary only when the room is higher (top to bottom)than it is long (left to right). A very, very useful tool indeed!
  17. Sorry, the post should read, what do the initials O.A. mean, not abbreviation, in the default window schedule. I missed my morning coffee!
  18. Under the Nominal Size heading, what does the abbreviation O.A. mean?
  19. Brian, I'm a VW's Designer user and it fits my drafting business perfectly, however, having said that I suggest you take a look at how Nemetschek's AllPlan works in regards to your question. Their website should answer all of your questions and give you something to think about.
  20. I consider auto-classing a learning tool for users not familiar with VW's class concept. In time, just as one thinks of what layer an entity belongs, you will automatically include classes in this thought process. Time wise, the current class can be changed as quickly as turning on and off the auto-class option.
  21. The surveyor should draw a direction arrow on each bearing or better yet, go either CW or CCW, not both if possible. By the way, the property tool itself needs a small modification. The bearing and distance are on the wrong sides of the property line. The bearing should be on the outside of the property line with the distance on the inside. It requires ungrouping the property entity to correct this oversight. Also, it's a good idea to use symbols for survey markers, if you need to edit any of them graphically, all the others will update as symbols do.
  22. Standard practice when dimensioning rooms is the first dimension signifies left to right, the second top to bottom. The space tool room dimensioning option puts the largest dimension first, regardless of orientation, which is not in keeping with standard drafting practice. Also, if the room is an irregular shape, the dimension tool seems to round off or average the distance. Am I missing something here?
  23. Can anyone tell me where I can obtain a variety of 3D built-in fireplace symbols that include brick/stone work, mantels, hearths etc.
  24. Any advice out there regarding the creation of rendered perspectives of log homes? Where can I get textures and how would you produce the corner effect of one log crossing over the other.
  25. VW's help material on HARDSCAPES tells me that the hardscape's 2D loci has an editable origin. Can someone please tell me how the ?#@*^">? to move it! I need to line up the 5'x5' paver blocks to the hardscape's boundry.
