  1. Problem solved. I discovered I can turn off surface hatches via the Background Render settings in the Object info palette.
  2. Thank you - your helpful explanation and file has got me partly there. I was failing to nest classes. Having created subclasses I can now turn on and off individual components. I still can't see how I can retain the component but turn off only its texture. In some instances this can be done by changing view from, say, shaded to Hidden Line but some textures still show in Hidden Line. I've attached a test file I set up with two walls, each having textures, each ascribed a class as you described. One wall is faced in stacked stone and one in siding. When I change render mode from Shaded to Hidden Line the stone texture is no longer visible but the siding continues to show a planked effect, albeit a simple, lined one. I'm preparing construction drawings from a textured CAD model and it would ease my workflow if I could switch the texture off completely without switching off the component to which the texture is applied. That doesn't seem possible. I'll try and find a workaround by choosing a different texture. 1670906722_Settingtexturebyclass.vwx
  3. I need help in understanding how to switch external wall textures on and off using classes. I've looked at the questions and answers in the forums and still can't get the textures to switch off. I've created a class called 'External wall texture' and set a texture for the left side of the wall (outside face). On the wall, I've created a component for the outside face and set the texture for that component "by class". When viewed in render mode there is no texture on the face of the wall, even with the External wall texture switched on. The only way I can get a texture to show is if I set the component to 'texture" in which case I can't switch the texture off by switching off the class. I'd very much appreciate advice in what's missing from the above that'll help me resolve this. Thanks.
  4. I'm in a section viewport and for some reason the shapes I form within it are not showing colour fill. How do I get this facility back?
  5. I'd like to amend the pre-formatted drawings list report so that it includes a column for drawing revisions, plus a column in which I can insert comments. Is there a tutorial on amending pre-formatted reports, or can someone explain if there's a simple way to do this? I can insert additional comments but can't figure out how to automatically add the latest revision, nor can I reformat cells in a new text column in a way that allows me to custom type text.
  6. Thanks, all. I've updated to version 2022. I've found a work around through rotating the texture. It doesn't permit fine adjustment but for the most part changing direction of grain by 90 degrees helps some. For quality rendering the frame member tool can't be used to build models. It's otherwise a powerful tool that saves a pile of work, so it's a pity those refinements don't extend to rendering.
  7. The Frame Member tool is useful and one I use a lot but I find a limitation in the rendering, namely that it invariably has the grain at 90 degrees to its natural direction. Is there a way to correct this in VW 2020?
  8. I took possession of a BenQ 32" 4k monitor a few days ago and have had a chance to become acclimatized to it. The monitor is well built with a stand that's adjustable for height, tilt and swivel and that is also VESA plate ready. The monitor screen is anti-glare and somewhat more pleasing to view than either the 2015 glass-screened iMac I was using or the shiny plastic of my 27" Qnix second monitor. The Ben Q pairs nicely with the Mac Studio I bought to replace the iMac. Set up was simple using the Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt cable, one of a slew of cables that comes with the monitor. The built in speakers are poor and not something I could live with. This would be an added cost if I didn't already have Samson externals. Also the BenQ doesn't have a webcam which would be a further additional cost. I rarely FaceTime or Zoom and can use my iPad for that purpose but if I had to purchase a webcam as well, it would bring the cost of the monitor and accessories close to the cost of a base model 27" Apple Studio monitor. I would also note that the built in speakers in the Apple Mac Studio are poor, if a tad better than those in the monitor. My eyesight isn't great and I thought going to a larger screen would mean larger print but it's actually smaller, indicating that I was probably running my iMac on less than full resolution. Nonetheless small text and thin lines are both sharp on the BenQ, with no blurring at edges or discernible pixelation. Colour rendering is also good, with fine adjustment possible using standard Mac software and that built into the monitor. The iMac screen can certainly go brighter, although I can set the BenQ to about the same setting that I had adjusted my iMac and Qnix screens to. I don't game, but video on the monitor is good, with excellent colour rendering and no apparent strobe effect even on fast movement clips. It's visibly harder to take in the whole 32" display than with a 27", meaning more eye scanning. From that perspective the 27" is probably optimum. What is helpful is to be able to have more of a CAD drawing on screen at the same magnification than with 27", meaning less scrolling. The BenQ comes with a puck that allows quick and easy adjustment of the monitor's preferences. It's not something I use much but could be useful to those who need to change preferences or colour profiles fairly frequently. Those same preferences are also adjustable via a joystick at the rear of the monitor. Had Apple not announced they were discontinuing the 27" iMac I would have waited for a replacement. However, after three days with the BenQ my conclusion is that this is a quality monitor that shares enough of the attributes I had with my 27" iMac, plus some advantages.
  9. My 27" iMac is long in the tooth and with the Apple announcement that they've no plans to come out with a larger iMac than the 24" I bit the bullet and ordered the Mac Studio Max. I pair my iMac with a second 5k monitor which worked well but am considering whether an upgrade to a 32" monitor using split screen might not save on desk real estate and also on cost. The 5K resolution has spoilt me and although I'm at an age where failing eyesight is a reality I wonder if the switch to 2160 resolution that seems to be the industry standard with the 32" monitor will be too much of a downgrade to bear. The iMac was incredible value, witnessed by how much Apple is now charging for the stand alone monitor. I'd appreciate hearing others' views on both split screen use instead of two monitors and on the perceptible difference between 32" 4k and 27" 5k.
  10. When I retired from working my practice full time I decided that the continued investment in the software wasn’t something I could justify. I also have an aversion to subscription software. However, I still undertake the odd commission and need access to some of my archived drawings. Cheapest option was to keep an old iMac (late 2012) on High Sierra and use that for the foreseeable future. I bought a new Apple-refurbished iMac (late 2015) which is now my workhorse. I’m spending a lot more time with the Affinity Suite of programmes now I have more time on my hands. As it happens, that new iMac went belly up about three weeks ago on the very last day of warranty. It needed a new logic board, new hard drive and new memory. I’m glad the bill was Apple’s. Before I bought the second iMac I downloaded some trial versions of the less expensive software and after VW they felt like a serious downgrade. Also at my age (not far off 70) it’s hard to muster the enthusiasm to embark on a steep learning curve for an inferior piece of software. I did write Nemetschek and ask them to consider having a cut price deal for relics like me who have been users of the app in its various iterations for three decades or more and still like to potter with it. It’s being considered, I’m told.
  11. I suggest you revert to Sierra from High Sierra. If you can't reinstall Sierra from a hard drive backup the process isn't simple. Apple have removed the Sierra installer from the Mac App Store.
  12. Package manager a problem here. Neither restarting nor clicking on the libraries individually helps. I'm running Mac 10.9.4 on a late 2012 iMac.
  13. I've tried that. The plus sign appears in the smart cursor window and I get a duplicate through option/drag. Is there a way to switch off option/drag for duplication?
  14. I can't seem to find the drop down menu that allows me to set automatic working plane. Nor does subtraction and addition to solids occur when I use the push tool with option key (mac) pressed and held. I've watched the video several times and worked through the menus and tools without any luck. Can anyone give me chapter and verse on this or link me to a pdf that describes it in baby steps. Thanks.
