  1. Ballpark, iirc that fundamentals to designer is about 2 to 2 1/2 x the difference of fundamentals to a single module. Some modules are more expensive than others but you wanted ball park. You also need to factor in cost of upgrades / VSS. The designer upgrade is more than single module upgrade cost. Assume it's similar with VSS. So assume that fundamentals is ?1000 and architect is ?1600 (+?600) then designer is ?2200-2500 (+?1200 - +?1500). Figures for illustration only and not based on any actual pricing. Also, historically (pre VSS) best time to buy/upgrade is early Sept when new version of VW has historically been released. Whether it is the case now that VSS is around, but you use to be able to upgrade every 2 years in early Sept for price of a single years upgrade as purchases (including upgrades) made in few weeks prior to new version being announced came with free upgrade to next version. However, with VSS, this loophole may have changed. Your dealer will have full details if/when this window opens.
  2. When I last did an upgrade, it was to 2011. I got the standard email (barcode and serial number etc) from computers unlimited with license code and I also got a link for download, possibly in seperate email. A few days later, a DVD arrived which has not been taken out of its box but I think contained the program and probably a bit of new features etc material. I don't know what's changed much with 2012 and/or VSS, but I know what you mean about feeling short changed as this happened to me whilst I was waiting for my renderworks to be processed. Entitlement for that was just an email with barcode/serial number. However, as long as you purchased from a dealer listed on Computers Unlimited website and your email is personalised direct from computers unlimited, then your going to be OK. Its just the virtual way of doing things these days.
  3. You mean, 'doesnt oficially support PAID upgrades'. Plenty of companies offer free upgrades (rather than updates) although most have not sussed that and force a repurchase or a limited lifespan goodwill upgrade. Just today did I download an app upgrade (same mechanism as OSX so valid comparison). Completely different app but my active licenses transferred across from old app to new app seamlessly. I then purchased an additional license to unlock a years subscription for an add on that I decided to subscribe to. Can't see why this mechanism can't be adapted for an upgrade model whereby you get a new app to download but entitlements from previous version are carried across and added to new app.

I use MrHand. Reasonably priced (quite a while ago when i purchased so can't remember where/how much) and no issues when used on Windows and OSX.
  5. Are you meaning importing an Access database into VW? If you are after the data in the database, suggest extracting the data in whatever form you want it and exporting to a format readable by VW like text
  6. There are many excellent free training guides on VW's website. You need to search around for additional bits, but the quick guides are a good place to start. There are movies too. There are also some third party books aimed at different disciplines. As for PDF. You need software to create PDF's as its pretty ubiquitous. As you say, its not build into fundamentals, but some computers have it built into their OS as part of the printing function. Other than that, there is Adobe Acrobat (full version not free reader) and some alternatives. But to be honest, if you don't have it built into your OS printer driver, my advice is to use VW design series or buy Adobe Acrobat as commercial documentation is too important to rely on to risk cheap or free versions.
  7. Mr Tickle will be very pleased
  8. Attribute mapping tool?
  9. Well thats news to the knowledgebase team. Maybe they were just trying to get a sale of 2012 or simply saying, "there are numerous known issues with VW...."
  10. What I do, don't ask why, is to create the model and Camera Match in 2011. I then export the final camera view to 2010 then export to epix where I then hand render/texture/add props/plants. Piranesi does supply Vedute which can convert from many formats to epix, but as I was using Camera Match to align with an existing image, I had to keep it in VW format to maintain the match. His may be the plugin that you have seen. Otherwise I may look into it further. Some times I would perform a render in 2011 to make use of the Cinema render engine and import this as a background image later imported into Piranesi. So I would get the benefits of Cinema and Piranesi. My workflow started off a bit convoluted as I didn't have a license for Camera Match under 2010. Thankfully Lion was fine to handle all my versions (I was effectly a test mule for Piranesi on Lion) but if you are coming from 12.5 then you probably will need the dual boot. Prior to the guys at Piranesi getting me a Mac version (it was at the point that I migrated from PC to Mac) of Piranesi, I had successfully run it in a VirtualBox session on my MBP. I also worry for the future of Piranesi. There seemed to be a split with the parent company and UK subsidiary which I think developed Piranesi. Whilst their heart is in the right place, I'm not so convinced that they have the muscle to compete like they did before as new versions are a bit thin on the ground.
  11. If epix export had not disappeared with the introduction of the Cinema 4d engine from 2011 on, I would have recommended Piranesi. As well as coming with its own image library, it is very easy to create your own and place or paint as a texture. The background fields, trees and house are from a photo (courtesy of Camera Match) , all the foreground is rendered in VW then textured and plants are added in Piranesi.
  12. I've found no issues at all with a fresh install of 2011 on new MBP running 10.7. Was it a fresh install of 2011 on the iMac that originally shipped with 10.7 or have any of these run through an upgrade process? ie 2011 on 10.6 then upgrade to 10.7 or upgrade from 10.6 to 10.7 then install 2011. If 2011 went through any upgrade process, suggest a reinstall of 2012.
  13. It's probably just Lion. I think there is a setting in Lion to tame the reopening of windows but it's not intuitive to find iirc it needed terminal prompt. Do a google for something like lion windows open. It's not just VW, I every time I bring Word from dock, I get another new document even though Word is already open. That said, VW seems more compliant than many others so maybe you have a seperate issue. Seems to be a source of frustration for many. Iirc that Apple did a recent update to assist.
  14. I think 2008 is a total no go. VW2009 on is ok in most parts. You either need to upgrade VW or short term, revert Lion or as your VW should be dual Mac/PC, you could run the PC version - there are a number of options on how to do this. Long term though, it would be worthwhile upgrading VW.
  15. I got the reminders for 4 updates yesterday and thankfully I ignored it. I just had todays reminder but only 3 updates. The missing one is indeed the Thunderbolt Gigabit port update. Nice to see that Apple have not buried their head in the sand and have pulled this one, unlike other issues where that have not been so forthcoming with pertinent action.

  17. +1 I found the same. I started off with a student edition of VW11 which came, unfortunately just like now, with no manuals. I would frequently get stuck with it not behaving as I thought it should, or VW would crash and I would blame it all on bugs. Ok, so crashes should not happen, but it is not always the fault of the app. I guess the reality was that only 1% were real bugs the rest was user malfunction. However, when I got commercial version of 2008, it came with all the manuals and I got time to read them cover to cover whilst I was commuting. It got me in the zone with how things should work, I always had instant access to tangible help which I find so much more palatable than virtual help and my productivity rocketed and crashes went through the floor. I cannot remember the last time that I had a crash, although I do still manually save (in addition to performing automatic backup) before I do what have been in the past, risky tasks.
  18. It might be useful to tell us all what the error message says. But I guess the planners have gone home by now so its a moot point.
  19. The error message confuses me but, when you export, change the file name of the exported PDF. If that works and you are on Mac, it may be an issue where you cannot export to a file if it's either already open (as you would expect) or the file name is highlighted in finder (which you would not expect). Don't know if this extends to files stored on server - it be that your co-workers are causing the problem.
  20. Thats one mightily fast telephone line...
  21. Draw on design layers, present on a sheet layer. Sounds like you are not in sheet layer when creating your viewports. Sheet layer viewports will allow you to show design layers at different scales, and as Tamsin says, you can crop the viewport (and select classes and layers) to only show the bits of the drawing that you are interested in. That way you can present different views of same objects on same sheet of paper/PDF etc.
  22. My Macboox and Magic Mouse both have two finger swipes scrolling. I just checked magicprefs and cannot see anything to control two finger swipes so there must be a simpler solution. I've got 'Mouse Wheel Zooms' unchecked if that helps. Actually, two finger swipe with magic mouse is my biggest bugbear. As I get tired, one of my fingers seem to linger on the mouse surface, which can lead to my model suddenly scrolling off the screen.
  23. Vectorworks does have a trace bitmap but I have only used it with limited success. Not sure if it is part of fundamentals or just the design series suite.
  24. Have you looked at the magicprefs app?
