  1. Who said Revit can't do modelling See video below and take note, Revit generates curved objects better than vw.
  2. There are definitely a few things that Revit can't do that vw can, however Revit can do lots more that vw can't do. Some may think working planes in Revit are very rigid but I think it may be because of our lack of knowledge of Revit (myself included) see video below.
  3. @willofmaine Wow, that's just horrible. The problem started obviously after the implementation of the parasolid engine. 4 versions into the parasolid engine, you would think that this would be picked up by either the programmers or beta testers. There could only be 2 answers to this, either: a) the parasolid engine is inferior or b) the NemV team don't know how to implement the parasolid engine properly
  4. VW is far from a user friendly modeller. In fact it's modelling capabilities are slow, cumbersome and inacurate (see attached) but most of all, the modelling tools are out-dated and archaic. The videos below, shows the modern modelling tools available today. http://www.formz.com/Video/formZ/formz7_ENU/formZ7Videos.html and http://www.formz.com/products/formz/formzVirtualArm_640.php?startMovie=00_intro
  5. http://www.formz.com/products/formz.html Looks great. It has extremely powerful modelling tools. Beside Revit, software like FormZ shows the old age (old technology) of Vectorworks.
  6. Revit is simply better and more widely used. Developers will always spend more time on a format that's more common. It's like dwg for 2D content.
  7. Well this is my point, vw's makes the user work with code but Revit handles the code for the user and the user set's up windows, doors, etc. in a more user-friendly way i.e. drawing with the mouse with dimensional inputs. Far more easier, user-friendlier, superior and productive than a user typing code. Looking at a screen and just typing code isn't my idea of fun, more like boring. I don't have enough experience with Revit to say if this is possible. However the tools are all there when editing families so I'm sure you can create a free-form shape however I'm not sure if you can make it parametric.
  8. I think this is the way it should be. Nowadays, especially in Australia, emphasis is placed on computer software rather than a person's technical knowledge or qualifications. And you're correct, Revit parametric modelling/families are definitely superior to vw's "coded" window, door, windoor, PIO tools.
  9. I agree with Kevin. I would like better modelling tools however at present I can get a building modelled fairly well, the problem I have is getting 2D representation of that model. The main problem I have with vw is the PIO's. I don't use them. I find them limited and useless and anything out of the ordinary is impossible to do with PIO's therefore I end up modelling everything. The problem is I spend twice the time on an object because I have to worry about it's 2D counterpart. PIO's need to go. This is why I also like Revit-there's no programming involved and Revit takes care of all the 2D drawings therefore I can just concentrate on the 3D model.
  10. I've just started getting into Revit but from your list, only these 2 above I can't see being done however I could be wrong. I think you're correct with this assumption I'm not a Mac person so I could be wrong but I heard through the grapevine, Apple has or will dis-continue the Mac Desktop range of computers. Therefore, if you'd like to have the fastest workstations, I think it's better for the long term for companies to move to a Windows environment.
  11. This confirms my decision to switch to Revit. From a modelling point of view and the 2D representation of that model, there's too much wrong with vw. At least with Revit, I can just concentrate on the model.
  12. I've got vw's workflow figured out. NemV's definition of BIM is twisted and I hate it. One can get a model done ready for rendering (in vw) very well, however getting a model ready for BIM is totally useless. Getting the model to render out of vw (VrayforC4D, Thea Render, Octane Render) is also becoming a real fight if not impossible. See Attached files-vw, in it's current state is unusable. VW is becoming more and more difficult to play with other software whereas Revit has plug-ins that work with Lumion, Twinmotion, etc. With Revit2013, it has native compatibility with 3ds Max 2013. Also, 3ds Max has numerous well intergrated plug-ins. This makes the combination of Revit+3ds Max unbeatable. Unless vw2013 is more Revit-like and better integration with C4D, vw2012 will be my last upgrade.
  13. As I said, vw has a terrible 3ds exporter. VW seems to be more and more un-usable after the parasolid engine implementation. I think your best bet is to export to C4D using the "Cinema 4D Export" command and then from C4D, export to sketchup or other software but then again C4D also has a plug-in for Maxwell. Not sure if this helps [sorry]
  14. Maxwell is extremely accurate therefore the price you pay for that accuracy is time. It takes a lot of time to render an image. VW 3ds export is terrible. Sometimes objects are left out but the main thing is updating the model in Maxwell Studio after the model has changed. VW renames objects inside the 3ds file therefore updating the Maxwell Studio file isn't accurate eg. objects that were deleted in VW, STILL show in Maxwell Studio. I have a copy of Maxwell Studio 1.7 but I use VrayforC4D. HTH,
  15. Still, I'll take that over coding any day.
  16. The video below shows the power of Parametric Components in Revit compared to doing it with code (as in vw). vimeo.com/16567241
  17. I don't think it's that expensive. Consider you get: AutoCAD AutoCAD Architecture AutoCAD MEP AutoCAD Structural Detailing Autodesk Showcase Autodesk SketchBook Designer Autodesk Revit Autodesk 3ds Max Design Autodesk Navisworks Simulate
  18. Last year I upgraded my computer including all software. I upgraded my C4D from version 10 to 13 and vw 2010 to vw2011 (free upgrade to 2012) so no money left. All the money I spent from vw12 to vw2012 and C4D9 to C4D13 could have been saved to now purchase the Autodesk Building Suite (http://south-apac.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/pc/index?siteID=1157326&id=16541383). Although I love C4D, I will have to bite the bullet and make that my last upgrade to Nemetschek products. From now on I will be saving my upgrade costs to purchase the Autodesk Building Suite. Is that humorous enough for you?
  19. Car manufacturers in the past made vehicles that usually didn't look like the same family of vehicles. e.g. a Toyota hatch-back looked totally different to a Toyota van. Nowadays vehicles from one manufacturer have a similar look while still being different e.g. you can make out a BMW 3 series and a BMW X5 comes from the same manufacturer even if it didn't have the BMW emblem. Similarly all Autodesk's 2013 products are starting to have a similar theme so it seems natural to move from one to another (e.g. AutoCAD to Revit to 3ds MAX). Also by doing things this way, the software seems more cohesive, cleaner and more professional. This is another reason I like the new Autodesk 2013 products compared to Nemetscheks philosophy of keeping all their software seperated and segmented.
  20. AutoCAD Architecture has these components. Unless you're a beta tester, you cannot say with certainty vw2013 is going to be a HUGE improvement (and it has to have a HUGE improvement to compete with the competition). All you're doing is speculating. However, I don't need vw2013 to judge the roadmap that NemV has taken. Based on VW2009 to VW2012 (especially VW2012), NemV's definition of BIM is an extremely convoluted one and VW will not come close to Revit and based on what I can see happening to AutoCAD, VW will start to fall behind AutoCAD/AutoCAD Architecture.
  21. Vectorworks basically is no match for Revit therefore when comparing it, I've down-graded it to AutoCAD levels. I left AutoCAD a long time ago and I've used it now and again however viewing the videos of the whole AutoDesk 2013 line of software, I get the feeling that AutoDesk is surging forward and companies like NemV and Graphisoft are going to be left behind. Below are new features of AutoCAD 2013. I wasn't a fan of AutoCAD but after having a look at these videos, all I can say is wow! Most notable are "Detail Views", "Section Views", "Model Documentation", "Additional User Interface Enhancements", "Associative Arrays" and "Property Preview" just to name a few. I'm starting to think that AutoDesk isn't the "devil" I once thought they were  Just observing,
  22. I beg to defer. In certain countries it's more expensive. When you compare price of vw to other BIM applications, you have to price VW Designer + Renderworks to have a fair price comparison. In Australia (the last time I checked): ArchiCAD = +/-$6000. VW Designer+RW = +/-$5500 Revit + AutoCAD + 3ds Max = +/-$9000. VW Designer+RW + C4D = $11000 In South Africa (the last time I checked): ArchiCAD = +/-R35000. VW Designer+RW = +/-R39000 So, vw is far from budget software.
  23. I mentioned this before but I guess no one paid attention. @WickedPissa, Contrary to what NemV would like us to think, Vectorworks is NOT a BIM software. It's a CAD software like AutoCAD, just with a little BIM tools. It's a software with No BIM intelligence however it's being forced to act like BIM software. AutoDesk tried to make AutoCAD work like BIM with "AutoCAD Architecture" but it didn't take off therefore they bought Revit, a true BIM application from the ground up. The heart of Vectorworks is based on simple CAD principles with no understanding of BIM and with some clever coding from the engineers at NemV, it's made to look like a BIM software. I doubt it will ever understand BIM elements from other software.
  24. @DWorks, Yes you're correct. That would help. I only hope the NemV folks hear you. @propstuff, I'm talking of components in the Slab interacting with components with the wall. The typical draw order commands do not work on components.
  25. The slab tool kind off interacts correctly with the wall however the user can't control the draw order of components. Please see attached. Pic A is what the Wall and Slab tool are outputting however I'm aiming for Pic B. I wish for Draw Order Control.
