  1. I'd like vw to have a more pc interface. I'd like to see the ribbon interface introduced for the short term however for the long term in Windows 8, I'd like to see the Metrostyle interface incorporated.
  2. Revit's connection to 3D Studio Max is far more professional than vw's connection to C4D. Dave, this (and the connection in general) needs to be seriously re-looked at.

    PC or Mac

Besides the obvious stuff that PC is cheaper than MAC, etc. I think that you might be looking to go onto Revit after you've tried VW and Revit only works on a PC therefore I'd suggest you stick with PC. PC, not only for the above reason, will give you more flexibility.
  4. This thread has touched on some extremely important points. 1. The "Stories" feature wasn't thought through properly. 2. Lack of Story/Elevation Benchmark co-ordination is proof of 1. above. 3. As DWorks says, unnecessary creation of layers. 4. Beta tester are only there for testing bugs and have no say in direction of development (I'm sure beta testers would have picked this up)
  5. @DWorks I'm an old school drafter from the drawing board days and we used to draft that way. As lines get further back, they get thinner. Anyway this is just an example of how one could use this Revit feature, there are many other uses. @Vincent Look at attached Pic 01 here http://techboard.vectorworks.net/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Main=32741&Number=161227#Post161227 This is what happens while navigating (both panning & zooming) in vw. Intuitive=reacts to commands currently being used by giving the user appropriate modes/tools to current command/selection.
  6. This is what I mean about Revit. It has so much power and user control it's amazing. The user has full control over everything. @Dworks The way Revit does this, allows the user to set different line thickness to lines in elevations eg. lines in the background are thinner than lines in the foreground. This isn't possible in vw. Also if you watch towards the end of the video, dashed lines can be placed on 3D lines. This isn't possible in vw. Also as a general observation, the drawing window isn't blotchy while navigating and the user interface is so much more intuitive than vw.
  7. My suggestion is wait until vw2016 or move to Revit. Vectorworks is just a CAD program pretending to be a BIM application. It's like AutoCAD trying to be BIM with AutoCAD Architecture. Autodesk saw this wasn't going to work therefore they bought off Revit. Besides, NemV has put a minor feature like their so called "stories" above more important things like these http://techboard.vectorworks.net/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Main=32741&Number=161227#Post161227 so you can see where their priorities lay.
  8. AutoCAD is just a cad program without any intelligence. Vectorworks is a cad program that has some bim intelligence. Revit is fully bim. I'm also learning Revit myself. I've been using VW from version 7 and although I just know the basics of Revit, I prefer Revit. Everything in Revit is user controlled therefore I can get the drawing to look exactly the way I want to. Also because of the Revit Parametric Technology, I can have full control over the variables to windows, doors or other families (families are similar to VW symbols/plug-ins). I find the whole process of bim far more user friendly. From a learning point of view, it will be faster in Revit to become productive (eg. in Revit, you don't have to worry about settings to Classes, Layers, Stories). Vectorworks is a whole lot better than AutoCAD but I think Revit has the edge over VW. Besides, Revit seems to be a much more polished software than VW (eg. in the link below, VW has all of these shortcomings which Revit isn't affected by) http://techboard.vectorworks.net/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Main=32741&Number=161227#Post161227
  9. It depressing because other software with the parasolid engine is like this already. Vw has been with the parasolid engine for 4 releases now and no where close to that level of interface. So I doubt it will ever be like that in the next 4 releases. And even if it get's to that level in 4 years there will be a better and newer technology where everybody else would have moved onto and vw would still be behind. As I said before, very few software (BIM or general modellers like FormZ) work in an old fashioned way like vw. All software (BIM and general modellers) are going this route if not already. The interface shouldn't affect record keeping. If you look at software like SpaceClaim and SolidWorks, they also have "mechanical" record keeping going on in the background but their interface is fast and interactive.
  10. I agree. This should have been put ahead of "stories" in the priority list.
  11. +1 Software like this shows how far behind vw is. Very few programs model in wireframe anymore. I'm all for a live interactive interface with clipping planes & live tool feedback.
  12. I'm Happy with win7-64bit as well. At the very least you get a better looking interface. However 1 small irritating bug/feature that long time XP users will find is a selected folder jumping to the bottom in windows explorer. If you can put up with that then go for Win7
  13. I've also been having these issues-sometimes with more fatal results (crashes). I think the best thing to do for everybody is email the file and submit a bug to bugsubmit.
  14. I agree with mikatoa. I like revit. It knows how objects interact with other objects. With regard to Luke's post, this is why Revit is simpler to use. New users don't have to worry about all these various settings just to get drawings setup on a sheet. Revit does most of the thinking. @Vincent C It's funny you say software shouldn't dictate to the user because that's exactly how I feel about vw. I also thought vw was the best thing since sliced bread however after I started learning and getting into Revit (with an open mind), I started to realise the shortcomings of vw and how far behind vw is and will be. Basically, I'm ready for the change to Revit. Much more simpler and more control.
  15. I would like to have an improved more organised "Send to Cinema 4D" command similar to the "Cinema4D Export" command. Please see attached pics.
  16. Hi Christiaan Try checking your customised user folder for a duplication of a slab tool or something related. I know I had a similar issue but when I removed an old slab tool in the user folder, all was sorted. HTH,
  17. Once you get your head around the different approach of Revit, you'll see lots of advantages. I like the idea of Families because I get my windows and doors and other elements to look like the way I want it to look like and not by some "coder". Blends, etc. are equivalent to add solids/subtract solids (how would you do a floor like that in vw?-subtract solids). It's all the same, just the terminology is slightly different. Overall, Revit is much more powerful but at the same time the user has full control.
  18. The problem is the Hardscape tool and all other tools in vw is based on "coding" which the user can't really manipulate. Whereas Revit's approach to BIM is very user defined and Revit can be setup with a company's standards where ever they are in the world. If the user wants a pink coloured section marker with a fancy arrow and a wavy line, you can do it with Revit and still keep drawing co-ordination however with vw the user is stuck with what the coder has given them. This is the problem with hard-coded plug-ins like the Hardscape tool, etc. Vw is just CAD program with no intelligence to make holes in slabs understand their relationship to other objects in the model.
  19. I agree with DWorks. NemV should have just made editing the levels in the Layer dialog affect other Layers and made objects in vw more intelligent (eg. a door and window should have a ceiling representation instead of playing with classes for a ceiling drawing, a slab should be able to be drawn on the same layer but be intelligent enough to understand it should be at the back of all other objects, etc, etc.). What they're done with this Stories thing is created a whole lot of confusion. This thread is proof of that. Students are the future. Imagine a student now have to set aside some time in their busy schedule to learn software. I've worked with vw since minicad 7 (1997) and I think Revit has a simpler approach to setting up a model, now imagine what students are thinking. This is why Revit is becoming so huge. A student has to choose between a complicated vw or straight out of the box simple Revit. They're choosing Revit. It has very little setup issues. The whole of Australia is adopting Revit and it's becoming the standard if not already.
  20. This is another example of vw not being intelligent. The more I learn Revit the more I like it. The below video isn't exactly what you're talking about but this is why parametrics in Revit is superior.
  21. Frankly I don't see any benefits to this so called more powerful modelling engine, parasolid. Add fillets to the model and the push pull falls flat on it's face (pardon the pun). Maybe a tech guy can explain what the new modelling engine does that the old one in vw2008 could not have done. Also, BIM software like Revit & ArchiCAD can model OR bring in 3D geometry from external sources and they intelligently figure out the 2D representation, even after further manipulation. It's like double work in vw because we have to spend time on the 3D modelling and then spend more time on the 2D representation. When working with Revit and ArchiCAD, the user gets a sense of software intelligense however when working with vw it feels like holding a childs hand.
  22. Unfortunately this is just the way symbols work in vw (as bcd said). This is another example of why vw should not be considered a BIM tool. The program has no intelligence. It kind of has BIM tools however it's based on CAD principles. It's a CAD program trying to do BIM :)lol
  23. The link below is an example of interactive graphic windows. It would be nice if vw had multiple windows that could have other views simultaneously shown. At 38s (video above) is an example of how interactive sections should be in vw. At the very least sections should be like this - in a seperate window so the user can see immediately how the section is affected when the section line is moved. Just a thought
  24. I would like to see an interface revamp. I know a lot of mac users don't like the ribbon therefore I would ask a different interface for PC users. After using Revit recently, I can see the benefits of the Ribbon. The ribbon in Revit is very context sensitive therefore you only get the commands that's relevant to the object you're dealing with. I like that. Also have a look at the link below, not only it shows a "ribbon type" of interface but it also shows how modelling in parasolid should be like. http://www.solidworks.com/pages/screencasts/choosesolidworks_all/ChooseSW_UI.html If you think about it, the tools on the left side of vectorworks is similar to a ribbon-it's just that it's placed vertically instead of horizontally and it isn't context sensitive. I like the fact that only commands relevant to the object selected or task at hand becomes accessible. Just a thought
