  1. just to add to the discussion, we purchased an HP 800PS last month and it works great. it is networked with macs running OSX/VW952 and a pc running win2k/acad 2k. everything plots to it perfectly. it was a great relief! and since the rip is built in and it has a 6 gig hd, everything flies. all the time/money i spent farting around with my old calcomp techjet would have easily paid for the new hp if i had been billing my time. it sounds like there are a number of you that are going down the same path. so the 800ps gets *****.
  2. we have just started toying around with issue manager. it seems that once you put a revision marker in the titleblock, you cannot go back and delete it or revise it, is this really the case?
  3. first thing that i would look at would be how many textures that you have in the resources for the file. i have noticed that that could pump your file size up. purge what you dont need. we just started messing with rw, so i am not sure why your files would do this. i have a similar type of file on my desktop right now that is 2.8 MB. hth & good luck.
  4. Can anyone point us to a font that is similar to the archstyl font that acad uses? we had one at one point, but cant seem to resurrect it for OSX. thanks for your help.
  5. try using a standard system font like geneva or helvetica. they seem to work fine. i have the same problem in worksheets when i use my office standard futura book.
  6. i usually bring in photos at 72 dpi and "best depth" in the jpeg format. that seems to control the size pretty well.

  8. we have been looking at upgrading our machines and will probably go with at least one 933 G4 and maybe a couple of 733's if we can find them. i would not opt for the DP since VW does not use it (which NNA should really work hard to change for the next release). if you can wait to june, apple will probably release a SP 1 gig machine at the 2500 - 2800 price range. just a question - why are your VW file so large? we do full 3d and occassional incorporate hi-res jpeg's and dont get files that large, even on 25000 sf plus projects. i run vw 9.5 on a G4 pbook 400 w/ OS X and have no noticeable lags. just curious... hope this helps.
  9. we are looking at upgrading our plotter in the coming months. currently we use a calcomp techjet w/ macplot raster drivers in OS9. since macplot wont support this plotter in OSX, we are looking at the HP 800PS. What current mac based plotters are others using? We are not sure if the 800PS is too much, or if we even need the added expense of built in postscript. your comments and suggestions are definitely welcome. thanks.
  10. ok - the first one is that when you go and create an entirely new record and corresponding schedule, that the ID tag PIO would register this new record and give you the ability to create a new tag. I just tried this by creating a lighting fixture record, but it would not allow me to use one of the ID tags. second - NNA should provide in the residential remodel setup assistant an additional classes for existing conditions (ie walls, doors, windows, slabs, et al.) This would actually be nice to have in all the setups, but at least in the remodel one. It would be a lot easier that trying to use some of the other classes to do the same thing, especially when using the wall type PIO. thanks.
  11. i have come across another little glitch that can be a potential headache. i have noted up a drawing in VW 9.5 running under MacOS 9.2 and then opened the drawing in VW 9.5 running OSX. all text created using the callout tool was flipped upside down and backwards. has anyone else seen this and/or figured out the cause? 12. Robert- Thanks for the quick reply. I have just downloaded and installed the script and it seems to work very well. I was esp. happy to see that it also worked on PIOs nested in symbols. Thanks again!
  13. I noticed that the Door 2 PIO has a toggle that allows a ceiling view. Is anyone aware of a way to globally change that toggle for a reflected clg plan (and then toggle it back for a floor plan?) w/o having to learn vectorscript? Thanks.
  14. craig- thanks for you r reply. the database i am currently working in has about 90 items in it. when i use it thru 8.5.2, i have no problems. they start in 9.0.1. i will email you a copy of the file for your review. thanks again. ------------------ rich carrroll carrollarchitects
  15. i ran across a small glitch today in using the note manager in 9.0.1. i wanted to create a new section with some new notes in there, but the program would not save anything i put in (it was not written into the note database text file). the original database was started in 8.5, and i have been successfully adding to it until today (this was the first time i tried in 9.0.1). has anyone had similar experiences? thanks. ------------------ rich carrroll carrollarchitects
  16. dont try the measure tool in 9.0.1 - it is very buggy - try setting your default text to a larger size
  17. try looking at the HP 800PS or the 500 PS. they are both hardware postscript machine, so you will not have to use rip software at all, and they are native to the mac os. HP actually has a rebate offer on them right now, check the hp web site. i think it is $1000 back on the 800 and $750 on the 500. i saw both these machines at macworld and they looked pretty darn good. ------------------ rich carrroll carrollarchitects
  18. I am looking to upgrade my systems and will probably be purchasing new 867 G4's. Is anyone out there having any tech. problems with VA 9.01 running on the newer G4's? Thanks. ------------------ rich carrroll carrollarchitects
  19. i have thoroughly worked through both distiller and print2pdf. print2pdf works very well for most things. you can use non-standard fonts w/ print2pdf, but it creates bitmapped images, which will create huge (500k plus) files. if you use the standard substitute fonts, then file sizes are more normal (50-150k). we typ. use futura book, but substitute times condensed. you can select all this in print2pdf. distiller works well, also, but seems to be slower, but will give you a higher resolution. we use it when outputting renderings and the like. ------------------ rich carrroll carrollarchitects
  20. you could also edit your save sheet views to give the classes that those elements reside in a grayed visibility (same for layers) that way every time you go to the sheet view in question, everything would be the way you want it. hope that helps. ------------------ rich carrroll carrollarchitects
  21. I am having a tough time with this one and wanted everyone to know about it in case you come across it too. If you go to save and you get a save as dialog, make sure that you save your file with a new extension or name. I have had the unpleasant experience in the last month of having this situation arise. If you do not save it with the new name, the next time you go to open the file, it will be corrupted and totally unusable. It seems that by getting the save as dialog, VW is telling you that there is a problem. Maybe NNA could give us a warning prior to the save as dialog telling us that this is happening and why. I have had this happen on two different files so far, using 9.0 on a mac (OS 9.1). Hope you have better luck than me. ------------------ rich carrroll carrollarchitects
  22. davide- this issue has been kicking around for a while in these forums. take a look and see some of the other suggestions people have. i use the same method that you do with one minor difference. i will develop my entire plan thru SD and DD, then when i am ready to go into CD's then i will cut out those areas of the plan that i want to have enlarged, paste them into partial plan layersand then link them back into the floor plan. by doing this i eliminate a lot of back and forth btwn layers, which saves a lot of time, esp. in VW 9. i have even used the same method with workgroup referencing on occassion. i have used masking in the past, but find it to be too combersome, esp. when printing to a postscript plotter, since PS reads the white of the mask, and factors it in the computations, make the file larger and taking longer to process. hope this helps. ------------------ rich carrroll carrollarchitects
  23. it sounds like you have an extension conflict at the print driver level. re-boot using MacOS all extensions in the Extensions Manager, and then try to print. if it works, then you need to sift thru your extensions to see which one is causing the problem. are you also using a software rip to send the files to the HP? good luck ------------------ rich carrroll carrollarchitects
  24. you are both correct actually - i kind of go back and forth between both methods. i actually use vwa setup on each new project, so having a standard template does not work to well for me any more (i used to have on before architect was released). it looks like v9 gives a little more initial control to setup multiple detail sheets with varying layers, but i have not really explored it yet, since i am reluctant to migrate at this point. thanks for your input
  25. layer links work great for alot of things, but the one thing it cant help is if you have a detail sheet with multiple scales in it. if you use VA like i do, then you have to have lots of detail sheets at different scale, and then spend the time editing the saved sheets to pull up the correct layers. when i used to work in acad, i could have all my details in model space at one to one, and then put as many different viewports in my paperspace and what ever scale i chose. some thing similiar to this would be nice to have, since you could set up the files more quickly, and ultimately have a more condensed set of drawings. if anyone has a suggestion on how to do what i just spoke ofm i would love to hear it. thanks ------------------ rich carrroll carrollarchitects
