Dear All,
I am very interested in using the Device Graph as a schematic overview of my Power Plans, but am struggling with a few things...
I am building a library of the distro types I currently use, most of these are single phase as I work in the Film industry in the UK. The device graph shows all items as being three phase which is annoying clutter. Is there a way to only have single phase boxes shown?
Fixtures (like Mac vipers etc) also show as three phase items, is there a way around this? Also these show up in the graph the same as distribution boxes, it would be nice if the final fixtures could just be text placed vertically, so as to fit beneath their respective distro outlets (if I am to place say 600 Arri-skypanels on the drawing then the space taken up would be massive and unmanageable) Also it would be nice if any ganged fixtures then would fit vertically below the first fixture.
I can't seem to do much with the Device graph in terms of output, it would be nice to be able to put this on a sheet layer, to be saved or printed. Currently if I go to print this to PDF I just get mush.
It would be nice also to be able to reshape the connecting lines, so they are able to make more graphical sense.
Also, if I am using the Patch Selected object and the Distro has a certain connector type and the Fixture has the same connector type, it would be great if the 'cable' would attach to it's respective outlet, at the moment it's quite happy to any outlet, big or small.
Powerlock distributor items shows only as three phase, but doesn't necessarily need to be so. I tried adding single phase versions in the Cable connectors xml, but can't get them to show up (which is probably due to my Xml skills which I haven't used for years, though I did find a fault in the file around the f-con connector).
There are 'fuse' type objects available, but if I overload them, nothing happens, am I meant to build a report or something to get to this information?
Gosh, now I think of it I have a wish list a mile long... too long for this post.
Which bring me to this, what are the intentions for the Device Graph for Vectorworks? Is it the intention for the Device Graph to be a fully functioning Schematic overview of what is geographically in the model-space?
I personally love a Schematic, or Single Line drawing for my power plots, probably more than a Layout Drawing, the Electricians can see where the cables need to go already, they just need the info of how it bolts together. Also, the Single line is where all the power calculations should be done and Im hoping that this is where the power planning is going, to leverage the software to do the calculations that are largely ignored (by some, not all).
Me, I'm a Lighting Tech for the Film industry (UK currently) and have been in the Lighting dept for some 35 years, during that time I have also taken some side-trips to work on big events (Olympic, Pan-Am, Comms, Euro and Asia Games ) both as an Electrician and later as an Electrical Designer, where I would do the layouts in Vectorworks and the single-lines in Creo- Schematics, certainly for those big events you need the power of Creo-schematics, but for the film industry just a single single line of the interconnections and a few basic calcs are all that is needed. I would dearly love for the Power tools to mature into this role, it seems like its been in the pipe a long time, and just needs a push.
In the meantime, is there somewhere I can get access to a comprehensive manual to how to use these tools, I've seen most of the videos on the net, done the cable tools course, and the Spotlight Cert (which didn't have much on cable tools)?
Whilst the Vids are great it would be good to have the full view on what is going on 'backstage' to make sure that what I am doing is correct, or that Im not asking something to do what its not supposed to, or that I can trouble shoot my workflow without having to trial and error everything.
Thank you for your time, I have to lie down now.
Cheers
Mat
