  1. thanks for responses - the problem seems to be that there is no HP500 driver (Gimp print or other) available to select...! This after having loaded the driver from the cd supplied, and also trying new drivers downloaded from HP. As it is a shared printer (via a pc) without a network card, it does not have an IP address. I do see the printer when selecting printers, it is just the driver selection that is problematic. Will keep trying...
  2. I suspect this is a Mac probelm not a VW problem, but the technical advice from this forum is so good, let me chance it! Recently moved offices and have to print via a Windows workgroup to a shared HP500 24" printer with an HPGL2 card. Have loaded the Mac driver that came with the plotter, as well as tried with the latest driver off the internet, both with no luck - the correct dirver does not appear in the HP driver selection when setting up the printer - my computer see the printer over the network, but that's as far as it goes. My local HP help says "Personally I would not try to use the HP500 and a Mac together without postscript support, but we could try" but that "one solution is the HP EFI Designer Edition" at considerable cost. The whole point of my office move was to use existing facilities wthout capital outlay. Any ideas? I use Mac OS 10.4.7 with VW 10.5.1.
  3. a late entry into the discussion. We recently bought a Canon W8400 - great quality, easy to use and also has separate ink bottles. Our office runs old iMacs, some old G3's, G4 iBooks and G5 iMacs, OS9 and OSX and it is so easy to get the Canon up and running over the network via Garo print drivers that ship with the Canon. In fact, we are gettng a second one for our branch office.
  4. thanks - tried your suggestion and no luck. Have now reinstalled OSX, and still n improvement. I guess the next choice is a total OS reinstall as opposed to an archive & install. Must be a particular gremlin in the machine. Someone also mentioned that Microsoft products can mess with othe applications' settings (particularyl Photoshop) but I am non the wiser..
  5. Hi, we weren the same boat, and after testing the HP500 and others eventually went for a Canon W8400 - much more pricy but fully networked and serves both OS9 & OSX (Tiger) and G3's, old iMacs, G4's & G'5s alike. The ink also comesin large wells of separate colours, whihc means you can replace each colour as it runs out. So far we are very happy with it.
  6. Hi, Have recently upgraded to VW12 on an iMac running Tiger (OS 10.4.4). The shift & alts keys worked for a while (multiple select etc) but then stop. The same problem happens in VW10.5.1 which we upgraded from. Yet I don't have the probelm in VW10.5.1 on my iBook also running OS10.4.4. Have just reinstalled both versions on the iMac, but the problem persists. Have gone into Systems Prefs and reset the defaults on the keyboard shortcuts several times - it solves the problem for a very short while, but then reverts back - no shift or alt key functioning. Have swopped keyboards, but the problem does not seem to lie there. Any suggestions?
  7. Adrian, Think I must try to test something similar to your setup. I have again just read through the "need plotting advise" series of messages, and its it pretty mind-boggling how many problems people have with OSX, VW & plotting! Someone needs to wade through all of it and summarise! Not me, I'm dazed and confused already. All I know is to steer clear of X-Rip! What speed of plotting do you get - I would imagine a shared printer would be much slower than a fully networked one, depending on the number of users that plot at any time?
  8. Want to upgrade to OSX, but phased (10 x macs over 2 offices - old macs to be replaced, so too expensive to do it all at once). Currently running VW10 on OS 9.2 plotting to a Xerox 2230ij via a dedicated plotter server mac with Macplot Raster. All currently runs fine. My options as I understand it are as follows: 1: upgrade to Microspot X-RIP - but then can it work with OS9 as well? 2: change plotters to HP500 which has the jetdirect server - presume it can work with OS9, but a very expensive option as we would have to replace the plotter in each office. 3. upgrade to PC's and ditch the Macs (not my preferred option!) Only once I resolve the plotting can we firstly consider upgrading computers, then consider upgrading to VW11. Any ideas?
  9.
