  1. It might be that your plug is locked, of which many PIO's are. Unfortunately you can't unlock it with out the author's permisson.
  2. There's plenty of threads no this topic already, but here's how it breaks down for me: -Don't skimp on monitors, they dramatically increase productivity for the user. -VW says it will support quad processors, so go with those. Can't afford them? Go with duals. -Gig(s) of RAM -A good video card that supports OpenGL. I've never noticed VW writing back and forth to the hard drive so I don't think it will affect performance. Above all...comfortable chair/desk/workstation.
  3. It's true, I long ago gave up moving the working plane for simple stuff. Unless the plane is truly not a predifined view, I don't bother. I'd like for VW to be a little simpler in moving planes.
  4. extruded objects will always extrude relative to the working plane. ie. draw a rectangle, extrude it positively in plan view, and the rectangle will rise up from the finish floor height. You can then move it by using a 3d move.
  5. Where can I find the entourage people? I've seen this on the other computers I use at the office, but my windows (home office) version doesn't have that file?
  6. Anyone else seen this? When I render an image prop that has an alpha transparency in lit fog, I'll get a shadow of the image prop's rectangular boundry. I've tried setting the recursion up to around 12, as well as boosting the rendering qualities to high.
  7. there are plenty of training manuals out there for photoshop, the ones you're looking for I would generally put in the "photo-retouching" genre. I've seen a couple that have to do with photo realistic rendering, actually amazon has a pretty decent selction. I tend to post-edit almost all renderings I get out of VW, even if it's just cropping or sizing.
  8. I've done succesful file conversions, both ways. If you're still stumped, shoot me an email and I'll see if I can help you out.
  9. I'd also like to be able to specify a profile polygon to be used as the bannister. Now that I think about it, I'd also like to specify a profile polygon to be used as the baluster as well.
  10. I think there's a couple ways of tackling this problem. To me, I mostly gear my drawings toward the style of construction that I know the shop is going to take. Are they going to carve it? Weld it? It's definitely possible to model this shape in VW, and get a flat elevation of each facet. Again, the real question remains, what's the shop going to do with the seams?
  11. You will only see lit fog if you have lights with the "lit fog" box checked. They will then illuminate the fog of whatever layer they are on.
  12. to use lit fog you need a fog background. You will find that in your resource browser. Double clicking on the background will open up a dialog box to adjust it's properties.
  13. I've had troubles with 12.5 as well. Right now I'm in the process of going through my templates and standards and workspaces, because tech support informed me that my problems stemmed from corruption. Now, nothing was corrupt before the upgrade, just after.
  14. I'd like to see windows/osx style browsing capability in the resource browser. Specifically: Drag and Drop functionality The ability to view the folder setup as a tree, rather than branch at a time.
  15. While cinema4d and artlantis are more closely related, I would still say that these programs all have their inherent strengths and weaknesses based upon what your needs are. Take a close look at each programs websites. You will see that they all have galleries of work done by users. Decide which rendering style you are striving for, which aspects of the programs best suit your needs.
  16. Image props are a good key to adding "life" to your renderings. I would also not discount the marriage of all rendering programs and photoshop. While outside architectural renderings are not my forte, I'd be willing to be that there is some degree of Post work in those renderings as well.
  17. Right. I should be more clear and point out that by "comperable to what you see in 3ds" means that you can look at your stuff textured like you can in other modelling programs, tweak it a bit and not wait too long will the screen redraws. I wouldn't go so far as to say that it's "rendered." And yes, we are talking about a process handled by your graphics card.
  18. You could also work in OpenGL, which is pretty close to real time, and comperable to what you see in 3ds.
  19. If you're looking under the hood of your computer to check engine performance.... Antivirus software kills performance. I shut it down when things get intense. Autosave function in VW will hang your renderings. I've mentioned this to VW a few times. Anything that is doing background checking ( a lot of software does this now, constantly scanning the internet for updates ) will eat up CPU space. A lot of people like to keep programs open in the background: email, photoshop, whatever. Specifically with programs like photoshop, they will eat up CPU and RAM space.
  20. hmmm....repaired the preferences on my dual processor mac. Hope that helps.
  21. Slowness (over 45 seconds of hang) in these areas: exiting a symbol deleting any resource Does anyone else notice these hangups?
  22. As I've mentioned before elsewhere, I couldn't really call the stair tool "snappy." In fact, I'd say it's down right "slothy" or "not really working anymore."
  23. Can the following be drop down boxes instead of type-in boxes for spotlight instruments: color (choosing from colors previously written in, with option for new color) gobo (same as above) focus point.
  24. If I use a generic light source, I can soften the edges or hard focus, but I can't see the beam and field angles projected, making focusing a lot more time consuming. If I use a spotlight lighting instrument, focusing is a breeze but I can't soft focus any of the lights. Am I missing something, or maybe can NM work to integrate the functionality of these two very closely releated items?
