  1. VW 2017 seems less stable than its predecessor, even on El Capitan - so crashing may not be a Sierra thing. I'll still wait for the update before moving to Sierra on my main machine - even though VW 2017 seems fine on my laptop under Sierra.
  2. So far, VectorWorks seems to be working fine (I wasn't foolish/brave enough to install it on my primary machine, though).
  3. LIM? Does an integrated model for landscape even work to test the desired outcome that includes biotic systems? I'm not so convinced about biotic systems. IM or whatever you call it works great for things that are built and primarily static. For things that grow and change, it's fine for describing the initial conditions, but (unlike the typical building) anything using biotic systems isn't "completed" until there has been enough growth to define the design and evaluate its success. It's also difficult to edit and undo topography - cut and fill calculations can be calculated, but editing them and correcting errors is far from a smooth, intuitive process. It also does not tend to consider soil horizons or profiles - something that should be as much a part of grading landforms as determining wall components.
  4. Thanks. Gutenprint uses CUPS drivers, and it worked fine under Yosemite. This might be a rootless problem. In any case, Gutenprint (GIMP-print) is supposed to be working on a fix (I can still print from my main, non-updated computer running Yosemite).
  5. This is not a VectorWorks issue - but it will affect anyone trying to print using VWX and Gutenprint. Gutenprint is broken - so if you're using an older HP DesignJet, you won't be able to print. None of their drivers install (fail - no software found to install), and for some reason OSX can't find the old ones, either. (I only installed 10.11 on my secondary computer, so no panic - yet)
  6. Is it possible to reference cells between worksheets? I would like to take the total (sum) field from one worksheet and reference it in a summary worksheet. There is no data attached, no records - just a field in a worksheet. My application: I have schedules with totals in one worksheet, and would like to include all the totals together in a summary worksheet. Right now, I have to enter the values by hand.
  7. I upgraded my Intel MacBook to Mac OS 10.5.2. In a (possibly) related issue, VectorWorks froze and had to be force quit. When I restarted, it said my workspace was corrupt and loaded another one. Ever since then, my Landmark workspace no longer works. There is no "workspaces" menu to select or another workspace or add the tools, and the basic tool palette is empty (blank). I tried: - deleting the preferences file - no good. - reinstalling vectorworks - no good. (I didn't erase all the old files, though) - copying the workspace from another computer (PPC) - no good. Has anyone had this problem, and is there a solution out there? Are workspace files processor & platform dependent?
  8. The QuickLook folder is in VectorWorks 2008.app/Contents/Library/ (the Spotlight folder is not) I was just being lazy about typing the full path name. I never moved it from where the installer put it. Bad installer? It did the same thing on two machines now - and I had to copy VW, delete, restart to get QuickView to work on both machines (one Intel and one G5).
  9. Just FYI, but the saved view is the screen extents, not the sheet edges. Have to zoom in to have QuickLook show the drawing boundaries as its limits.
  10. After rename: not working. After launch and quit: not working. After open and save file, quit VW: not working. After restart: WORKING! W00T! (btw, the 'spotlight' folder is not inside ~/library/. Only QuickLook)
  11. Shut down and restarted computer. No difference. qlmanage -m No file, also says "Change detected: NO" at bottom of output. Launch VW, open and re-save file. qlmanage -m No VW QL file, also says "Change detected: NO" at bottom of output. Quit VW - still a nice VW icon instead of a QL preview.
  12. I never said it was a GOOD workaround. You have to update the pdf's every time you stop working on the project for a while (as in when you start working on another project and won't get back to the first one for a while). I guess I'll just write off the QuickLook feature in VW until SP3.
  13. Terminal commands qlmanage -m not listed qlmanage -r + qlmanage -m still not listed.
  14. QuickLook plug-in is in the application package. vectorworks 2008.app/contents/library/Quicklook/VectorWorksQL... Results of search: 1 copy of VW2008 (on the upgraded machine - another machine in office is running VW2008 SP1 on a separate license key)
  15. What about the old workaround of saving the sheets as pdfs and printing from Adobe Reader?
  16. Yeah, open a file or create a new file, save it, close it, go to the Finder, click on the file, hit spacebar. See a big VectorWorks file icon and no QuickLook. Or - select CoverFlow and see lots of VectorWorks icons and no previews. No thumbnails of files. Shut down the machine, had a cup of coffee, Restarted the machine, looked at the icon, launched VectorWorks, saved the file again, still no joy. Apple should start naming their operating systems after insects instead of cats if this keeps up!
  17. Only one copy of VW2008 on my machine. I guess the workaround will be to save each sheet as a pdf file and look at those, unless everything miraculously starts to work. Apple seems to have let the leopard out of the cage half baked. Or they forgot to tell us it's only a leopard CUB.
  18. Sorry, no joy here either. Installed SP2. Launched VW, saved file, closed file. No Quicklook. Restarted computer, relaunched VW, created new file, saved new file, closed new file. Tried again previously saved file. No QuickLook. Saved file to another machine. No QuickLook. Am I missing something? (yes, all computers are running OS 10.5.1. VW shows SP2 update)
  19. Our solution is a bit different. We created a master file with our own plant symbols and data tags, and just copy those from the master file to new planting plans. We can add whatever plants we want, and the ground covers are set up as patterns. The nice thing is that since we designed everything, our plant legends can sort everything, count it and update it automatically if we change anything on a planting plan. So, the result is that I've never really gotten into the Landmark plant section.
  20. There are some things I could mention, but no chart - it also depends on what you do with the program. I'm a landscape architect, so my needs are different. For example, I need to quickly and automatically extract data linked to symbols (blocks in ACAD), sort it, do some simple computations, and display it on the drawing. It's a fairly simple process in VectorWorks. Unless AutoCAD has drastically changed since I used it, there's no comparison. I also find that the user interface in VectorWorks is easier than ACAD and requires less keystrokes/user input, resulting in less time spent telling the program what to do.
  21. After upgrading to 12.5.1, I cannot open any existing files without crashing. I've trashed the Prefs file, and the problem persists. Repaired permissions, too. Re-entered S/N, name, etc. No good. Going back to 12.5.0, last stable release.
  22. 12.5 files are printing quickly for me on a 455CA (from a Mac). There is sometimes a problem where patterns (fills) print over the drawing or title block - this is solved by creating pdf files and printing from Adobe Reader.
  23. PDF files generated using the PDF export function(either batch or single file) generate fatal errors on both Oce Reprodesk and Metaprint machines/software. This happens whether they're color or black and white files, and under any configuration that I tried. Workaround: use the Print command, set to 300DPI, print patterns at screen resolution (or they'll all be gray), and select the "save as pdf" command. This seems to work on the Metaprint, but not the Oce Reprodesk. The files are uploaded to the blueprinter's server via FTP - it would be great if there were an option to generate older, more compatible PDF files. It may be that the version of pdf used by VectorWorks is newer than the version these machines (RIPs?) can process. Anyone else having this problem? I was the only one having troubles at the repro service.
  24. This might sound traitorous, but have you tried SketchUp? There's a free version (not sure what it does, since I have the paid version). But... it might be easier than VectorWorks for this kind of thing, and as long as they're not asking you to do working drawings, engineering, cost estimation, planting plans, space shuttle piloting and making Cointreau souffl?s, it might do the trick. p.s. your boss is an idiot, and if the deadline really is Friday, a romping card-carrying sadist as well. It's time to look for a new job (this could be the idea BTW)
  25. I've been having some trouble with hatches or blank spaces overwriting my plans, toward the leading and trailing edges as the sheet feeds through the plotter. I haven't tried printing my test file in VW 12.5.0 yet, so maybe this is cleared up? It does not always do this, even with the same file. Workaround: batch to pdf and print through Adobe Reader. This eliminates the problem. Anyone experience this problem? Due to Apple, perhaps, since VW was printing fine before? (Mac OS 10.4.7, HP DesignJet 455CA)
