Spotlight - DMX Patch in Project File
jgulbrandsen replied to jgulbrandsen's question in Troubleshooting
Thanks for quick reply @jcogdell If i also in the same loop can add a request for improvement of the DMX Patch. t would be very nice if this window can be "floating" like an worksheet. So that i can work inside DMX Patch, and at the same time move/zoom and look around in the drawing. As it is now, DMX patch is an locked popup, so i cannot do other stuff at the same time. -
Hello, Question when working in a project file and using DMX Patch window. There is no "warning" when opening DMX Patch window, if some of the lighting devices are checked out to other users, or no question to check out lighting devices when opening this window. This means if i make a lot of changes, and when finished and clicking OK, first now will vectorworks check if these Lighting Devices is available to check out for me and make changes to. There is also another weakness here, it will always check out ALL lighting devices in the drawing, no matter if you just made changes to one lighting device. This can result in that i cannot make changes to available/non checked out lamps by other users, because if not all lighting devices is available, it is not possible to confirm the check out popup that appears when finished. Another bug i guess? If a lighting devices is locked, it is still possible to change the information inside the DMX Patch window.

Hello! Will there be a way to assign a (custom, not online) GDTF file to my SYMBOLS, not actual Lighting Devices in the drawing? I understand i can input the "GDTF ID" into the symbol, and it will download from website. But if i have custom GDTF Files that is not in the GDTF-Share website? Now we have a Resource-Folder with all GDTF files, and need to map these to the Lighting Devices after they are inserted to the drawing. The preferred workflow will be to draw the lighting device from the symbol and GDTF linked already. I also found a post on this from earlier:

Thanks again. Have i missed something, is there a page where i can see the status? Or just emails coming, if someone replies? -
Hanging Position, Snapping Bug? 2024 + 2025
jgulbrandsen replied to jgulbrandsen's question in Troubleshooting
Thanks @jcogdell This has been happening since as long as i can remember for 2024, and also 2025. Windows and Mac. For all users in our workgroup. 2024 Update 6 Build 765860 2025 Update 0 Build 775667 I think i also have submitted a bug report a while ago, but unfortunately i never got any response. -
Hanging Position, Snapping Bug? 2024 + 2025
jgulbrandsen replied to jgulbrandsen's question in Troubleshooting
@jcogdell Same with truss tool, and CTRL/ALT dragging with mouse. All scenarios where the snap is "activated". If i just use duplicate array it will work, but this is not always the best solution. -
Hello, 1. Insert one truss object (example 1m piece), to X,Y,Z = 0. 2. Make a hanging position from this truss piece (Single, Geometry). Hanging position have X,Y,Z = 0,0,0. 3. Then move the entire hanging position object to a new location X=1m, Y=1m, Z=1m. 4. Go into the hanging position, with double click. Truss object inside here is still XYZ=0, which makes sense. 5. Copy the truss object. 6. Paste truss 7. Now try with mouse to snap (with the red-truss-snap line) the copyed truss, to the end of the first truss. This should be at X =1m, Y=0m, Z=0m (inside the hanging position cordinates). Instead the truss moves to X=1m, Y=1m and Z=1m. So it takes the XYZ values from outside the hanging position, like absolute values, not the relative ones inside hanging position. The offset will be even bigger if the hanging position was moved to X=10m, Y=10m, Z=10m. This makes it almost impossible to edit an existing hanging position. Am i doing it the wrong way, or is this a bug? For truss outside the hanging position it works as expected.

Thanks @Pat Stanford I definitely see your arguments, and i do agree. This time i posted the bug here, and also used the Vectorworks Bug report site/form. I normally only use the form to send in bugs, and i think i have gotten a reply only once. So i will never know if it was a bug, or user fault / other reasons. Many times i also noticed that this bug report is not on the list for new releases bugfixes, so thats extra frustrating. No feedback, and no fix. So if i can come up with a different request, i would appreciate better feedback when sending bugs into the form. If this is the preferred method, or i can post them here in forum.

@dpicolo Thanks. Is there a place to search for known but not fixed bugs? This would be great feature, for both customers and Vectorworks I guess. Less work for customers not needing reporting a known bug, and less work for Vectorworks to reply to the same known bugs many times.

Hello, I do Viewport references in the project file. If the reference file settings is not "correctly" set up before creating the project file, it seems impossible to update the reference settings itself inside a project file. Example if the reference path is set to absoulte not relative, and i want to change this. In my working file i edit reference, and this popup "Edit Reference" appears, here i change the settings for Absolute -> Relative patch and locates the file. If i also change settings for "Save references cache to disk" , "Automatically update out of date reference during file open" and "Update class definitions". Then i hit OK, and then "Save & Commit" my changes. Everything now looks okay. I can close my working file, reopen the working file and this settings is saved. If I instead (or another user) opens the project file the settings for the referenced file is not changed, and have resetted back to previous settings - the same setting as when the project file was created. Other settings for the viewport like classes and layer visibilities do changes if i edit these. Same happens if i want to change the reference to another file, lets say it was referenced with a file called "drawing v1" and now "Drawing v2" have been made, i want to swap the file inside the reference, not make a new reference. This is also impossible inside the project file. Is this expected behaviour or is this a bug? If this expected, is this the way it should work, or can this be edited to be possible to change?

macOS 14.4 Compatibility Issues with Vectorworks
jgulbrandsen commented on JuanP's article in Tech Bulletins
Anyone knows if all issues is fixed with new MacOS 14.5 and the Vectorworks 2024 Update 5 released yesterday/today? -
Hi, I hope someone can help me solving this. I want to create an object (lets call it "data tag" from now on, but maybe there is an better type of object for this) that is reading information from my lighting devices. For each lighting device i enter information directly to the lighting device, and i want to create a box/table to show some of the information. Here an example with 4 lighting devices, see picture. I have entered in UserField 1 = "LK 1.1" for lighting device 1, and "LK 1.2" for lighting device 2. I need to create multiple of these boxes/"data tags" in the drawing, so example 10 of these boxes (LK 1, LK 2, LK 3....) but i only want to show one of the boxes in each "data tag". It would be nice if this is possible to scale easy. Sometimes i need 5 boxes, and 20 next job. The "data tag" will be placed different places around in the drawing, or maybe directly on a sheet layer. I want to give each "data tag" the name manually, so i can control what i will lookup this time. This can be a manually entered field. How i can enter this information is not so important. Then i want to search if "LK 1.1", exists in a lighting device. If yes i want to return: Instrument type, Channel number, Universe and Position into the rows. If no result, it can empty. If the "data tag" need to connect to a lighting device to read out "LK 1" / name, instead of manually entering the name this is fine. In the end if there can be a worksheet that displays all the boxes also, in the same format, this wold be great. I am open for other possible solutions on how to solve this. So if you have a better idea please help 🙂

Hi, If i make a hanging position out of some truss pieces. If i add a lighting device to this hanging position the lighting device automaically enter the field "Position" with "LX 1", and if i change name for LX1 at hanging position tha lighting device also changes postion name. If i double click into a hanging position this is build up with "truss" objects. Truss object has a field named "Position Name". By default this field is empty and does not follow "Hanging positon name. I want the hanging position name to automatically fill inn to the truss objects field "Position Name". Reason: I want to make a report of all truss-pieces sorted by "hanging position". Is there a way to make this worksheet with parameters already existing or is there a way to link Truss - Position Name with Haning Position - Name ? I have attached a file for visual explaining. LX 1 - 5 is just named at the hanging position and this 5 trusses show up as one line in the worksheet. I want the worksheet to look that every haning position has its own line in the worksheet. For "LX 11" hanging position i have manually entered (double clicked) haning position and given the truss piece name "LX 11" into the truss's field. Is there a way to automate this, so i can change names and add pieces to the hanging position without maually writing names.. Hope this makes sense. Hanging Position.vwx
