And apparently I can't spell "fields"

I am trying to set some help text for a custom plug-in for fields in the OIP. I know there is a setHelpText procedure, but how do if find the dialogID and componentID of the OIP and individual fields? Is there another procedure I need to use? Am I also able to set help text for fields under the Data tab in the OIP? Is it just knowing the deviceID or am I going to have to go down the road of event based OIP? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
