  1. Roman Your problem with workgroup references has cropped up a number of times on the user forum. I really think that in the next issue of VW that NNA should sort out the following: 1. Allow the ability to move a reference file from its original insertion point within a file and to stay in the 'new' position regardless if the original file that is referenced in is changed. 2. Allow reference files to be rotated and stay rotated. Masking and clipping of reference files would also be a useful feature but not as fundamentally important in my opinion as the two items above.
  2. Hardware is a G4 eMac 1GHz with 640Mb of RAM. The file size is 2Mb with no Workgroup References Generally our system works fine for our work. We have only had a speed issue with this file and the only thing unusual (for us) about the file is the number of sheet layers and viewports. My query is a general one as in Autocad the more viewports that you add to a file has an affect.
  3. We are working on a single file that has a large number of sheet layers (12) and corresponding viewports (24). We have found that creating and modifying viewports in this file seems to be getting slower and slower. Is there a problem with this number of viewports and sheet layers or maybe there is some other bug lurking in our file.
  4. Travis. Thank you I have just had a moment of epiphany and created my first successful layer link to a workgroup reference and have been able to sort out my problem from my previous posts on this topic. My request still stands to NNA to improve the referencing functionality or at least to improve the online and paper manual explain how layer linking works. As a switcher from Autocad & Microstation I think that having a reference system with some of the basic reference fuctionality of ACAD & Microstation would be a major help to spreading VW.
  5. Thanks Kristen & Travis. I will continue my experiments in layer linking to see if I can get it to work. Small (no major) plea to NNA. Please in any future upgrage can you make it easier to manipulate and move reference files. +Thanks for 11.5 especially the sketch mode
  6. I am running VW11 but viewports will not solve the problem as you cannot trace off a viewport. I also think that the sheet layers are mainly for presenting the final drawing in viewport form. What I am trying to do is to workgroup a reference plan in, rotate it through 90degrees and then draw the side elevation off the rotated plan. It all works fine until I make any changes to the original plan. Then when I go back into my elevation file I find the plan has unrotated itself.
  7. I have the same problem with layer linking. If I want to elevate a building I would like to be able to reference in the plan as a workgroup reference and rotate it to lets say draw the side elevation. The big problem I have is that if I go out of the elevation drawing, go into the plan drawing and make some changes to the plan on my return into the elevation drawing I find the 'workgroup reference' plan has unrotated itself to its original orientation. Is there any simple way one can make the rotated plan stay rotated as a reference in the elevation drawing. I have played around with the layer linking function and pored over the manual but cannot seem to get it to work. If anyone out there has a simple method for keeping the workgroup reference 'plan drawing' rotated and fixed regardless of changes to the 'plan drawing' I would really appreciate to know how this can be done.
  8. Thanks. The original image was in JPG format. I went back to the original image yesterday and in Photoshop decreased the resolution and increased the canvas(background) size. I then reimported the image into Vectorworks. It worked and the outline box did not appear. Maybe in a future version of VW this bug could be ironed out. We import a lot of photographs and graphics into our drawings and its important to get this right.
  9. Thank you Archoncad, Nam & Balemi. We are going to try and fiddle with the image layer setting, size and format and see if that sorts it out.
  10. Hmmmm! The bitmap display preferences are set at full resolution and I still get this box with diagonal lines. Any other things to check?
  11. We are having a problem with incorporating images into Vectorworks. We want to bring in free hand sketches into the VW drawings. The problem is that as well as the images we are getting a very faint but noticable box around the image and a pair of diagonal lines running from corner to corner. Does anybody know of any way of getting rid of the box and the diagonal lines? N.B. the lines do not appear in Photoshop prior to import into VW. Many thanks
  12. Thanks for the response to my original query. One follow on question though the add on tools seem to be configured for Vectorworks 8&9. Will they work on Version11?
  13. Anyone know of on easy command or shortcut button to switch off class layers by clicking on an object directly? This would be neater than having to call up the organise classes menu and scrolling down.
  14. Erich - Just a comment on workgroup referencing. If you are used to using xrefs in either Autocad or Microstation you will be frustrated in assuming that workgroup referencing gives you the same abilities. Difficulties occur when you try to move or rotate the referenced file as any subsequent changes to the reference file will cause it to shift back to its original position and orientation. I have been told that 'layer linking' gets around this problem but I have not been able to work it out. Hopefully VW can in some future release improve workgroup referencing to make it a more useful and powerful tool.
  15. As a VW user who migrated from Minicad to Autocad and then back to Vectorworks due to changing offices before establishing my own I would like to make two comments. Firstly binding Xrefs in Autocad while simple in theory can take signicant amounts of time in practice. Secondly, with some minor improvements in VW workgroup referencing it should be very straightforward for VW files to achieve a similar referencing mode. This would also be a huge help in improving the basic functionality of Vectorworks.
  16. From the answers above and a brief trawl through the Tech Board it would appear that we need to purchase Adobe "Distiller" software or JAWSPDF to produce pdf files of a reasonable quality. Can anyone advise on the merits of either? Or better still is there a no cost solution around?
  17. We are running VW11 on Macs and frequently need to print pdf files to issue to clients and contractors. The results and quality tend to be very patchy. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how pdf files can be created of a quality that comes close to or matches paper output. Many thanks
  18. We use both Sketchup and VW. We have had no difficulty in exporting/importing through DWG formats between both software packages.
  19. We are having difficulties printing in Layer Colour. Upto now we could print hatches and patterns successfully in Layer Colour. For some reason we cannot do so now. Only the outline of the object is in colour with the inner hatch/pattern in black or white. Can anyone guide me on how to regain the ability to print hatches and patterns in layer colour. Many thanks.
  20. We find batch printing very useful but one simple request. Can an option for printing in layer colour be added.
  21. Ouch. I don't think that improvements in Vectorworks should be ruled out because they are similar to existing features in Autocad or Microstation. I don't see how it should be very costly or difficult to improve the functionality of reference files in VW. The benefits are very clear from my humble view as someone who has experience of a fairly wide range of CAD software.
  22. No offence taken. My background is one using Minicad 8years ago and I am a recent returnee to the software after using mainly Autocad and Microstation. I am a big fan of the software and hope that someone in VW could improve the reference file functionality. I think it would be an unbeatable package.
  23. Just to add to Eric's responses to my original post. The facility to easily move and rotate reference files would be a big plus. I have started to look at layer linking but it looks very convulted. On the plus side we are relatively new VW users. I think the software is an excellent programme and this improvement of handling reference files is the only thing missing that the competition have a clear advantage at present
  24. A simple request for any future version of VW. Can it be made possible to move and rotate reference files. This would dramatically increase the power of the programme. (N.B. I know you can do this in the current version but any changes to the reference file causes it be reinserted in its orginal position and orientation.)
