  1. Thanks for your quick reply. When I export it, there is text of all different sizes, some in groups, some in callouts, some with white backgrounds, some with no backgrounds, some loose. None of it shows up at all. When I reimport there is simply nothing there to select. Now I export to VW8, put it over on our old G3 and export from there, then transfer it back to the Server and new Macs to email out! The text comes in as Geneva, even though it was Helvetica originally.
  2. I have been exporting dwgs from VectorsWorks 8.5 with no problem. I am now on VW10 for Mac. I can export but when I open it up in AutoCad (and re-exporting to VW) all the text is missing! Is something set wrong? --Diana
  3. Measure with the dimension tool how far you want to move the door. Then back in the clunky/confusing position option, type + and the dim you came up with. (ie Position + 4")It calculates, works like the move tool but within the door attributes.
  4. Any tips on creating a perspective view that matches an existing photo? I know the Vis 4 has a feature whereby you chose points on the model and points on the photo.
  5. Thanks EJ, That is exactly what I want to do but I can't find where Vectorworks keeps its original photos that it's textures come from. I thought of exporting something I've made but I'm not sure how to scale it. I have many photos that I can use for textures, but many times I get lines from the repeating patterns as my photos are from life and not the same on both sides.--Diana
  6. Dan, I use the full Adobe Acrobat Pro 6.0 and have no problem. Once loaded, the pdf converter comes up as a printer choice in Vectorworks, so you just print to PDF. I use the default high quality setting, and "check don't send fonts". Then it asks about postscript vs. non. Use NON-postscript. Grayscale comes out as dots(half-tone. Line weights come out identical to printing directly form VW. I print out (in pieces) from the pdf for a check and we then take the pdf files to be plotted.
  7. Many times I like a texture like bricks for instance but need to change the color. The Image Shader will do a little but it is always darker, overlaid on the orginal photo. I would like to open the org photos in PHotoshop and change contrast, color etc. Is this possible?
  8. Sometimes I have a few versions of a document and want to combine parts of each into one doc. How can I import layers from other Vectorwork docs? (Not ACad) I know I could recreate the layers and paste the items separately but that seems like the long way around.
  9. This is a little late but regarding the model and heights... I set all the design layers at zero with room for their height. Then I actually place the walls and floors at their actual height in life, i.e. the first floor or whatever point I need at zero, the second floor is at 10 or 12', the third at 24' etc. The ground/basement/cellar is a negative number. This lets me work on a layer but using layer options I can see the other layers in gray or full color to check sections as I build. It also reminds me of how high things are getting. I have a handdrawn sketch posted to refer to. The only drawback I have found is that when you make perspective views you have to add the height of the story to the eye height, i.e. a view on the second floor might be1 6' looking at 16'
  10. Thanks, again Mike. You have answered a bunch of my questions. You are one helpful Australian :-)
  11. It looks like the WinDoor plug-in does this. It says: "Extensive control over internal and external trim." Sometines we use a thicker trim on the top than on the sidss. I am wondering if the plug-in does this. Also seems like the foreign versions have more features. Maybe they are more costly.
  12. There is currently no way to specify a mullion in a transom.
  13. We would sometimes like to specify different size trim for effect.
  14. I cannot figure out how to create a single larger panel over two smaller panels on a historic style door. The middle stiles vertical and horizontal also have to be the same width currently.
  15. The stairs seem to deal only with wood construction. Stringers are not right for metal stairs.
  16. Fred, Did anyone ever answer you? I am also looking to create steel stairs and the plug-in only seems to deal with wood stairs. Diana
  17. The stair tool seems to only be able to make wood stairs. I need metal stairs where the stringers are on the outside of the treads. Short of manually making the parts, is there any other way to do this?
  18. I have elements that render correctly(final render quality) when I look at them on their respective layers individually. They also look great in the mapping dialogue box. They render correctly on the Linked layer UNTIL I add a new element, and then something that rendered before now comes out without the mapping, as just a solid color. The elements are roofs, & walls turned to solid subtractions. The mappings are from the system, shingles, wood etc. It seems like a memory problem to me so I upped the Virtual memory to the max of 4095, set prefs in the Windows XP for program performance, opened only Vectoworks by itself, etc. But nothing seems to work. I am running a Gateway laptop M675 with Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 2, Pentium 4, 3.00GHZ, 1.00GB of Ram. My graphics card is Mobility Radeon 9600 that says is is working fine. I put Vectorworks in the Firewall exception list and then I turned the firewall off as well. The app is Ver. 11.01, 453 objects in drawing, three layers--1st Fl, 2nd Fl, & roof are linked into the Linked layer. One sun, one fill light (sun light on about 28%, and some interior lights to make windows interesting. Glass mapping is glass simple. File size is 18,937K. I've tried everything I can think of. Any suggestions as to what can I do?

They will render fine on the Linked layer UNTIL I add a new element, and then something that worked before now comes out without the mapping, just the solid color. The elements I am creating are roofs, walls that are turned to solid subtractions so I could place windows above each other or add exposed beams easily. The mappings are from the system, shingles, wood etc. It also seems to happen only when the Sun is on. Earlier I was getting degredation of the mapping in the form of black spots making the smooth siding look weathered! It seems like a memory problem to me so I upped the Virtual memory to the max of 4095, set prefs in the Windows XP for program performance, opened only Vectoworks by itself, etc. But nothing seems to work. 20. I've also gotton black speckles on textures such as Wood siding gray. It won't appear at first, then shows up with some change of the sun or angle of perspective. Very annoying but I haven't figured it out and also clean it up in P'shop.
  21. I am looking for the best way to build the 3-D to save time in creating elevations. If I build as in life, floor/wall/floor, then the hidden line elev for instance, shows the floor lines. I would have to cover it all with one big polygon, i.e. siding, as in life. I started building the floors inside the walls so that the walls actually sit on top of each other. Then there is only one line to erase or hatch over. This is counter-intuitive and makes the walls height in the program, taller than actual (by the floor depth). Should I stick to the above idea?
  22. Thanks for the tips, everyone. Robert, I hadn't had time to play with Renderworks and I was familiar with AutoCad so I was trying to mimic it. I definately want to get into different looks than conv. Acad but I was on a deadline. Kevin, the gable wall idea is good except that it shows a line where the pieces meet in Hidden line elev. Maybe if I was hatching it wouldn't matter. Grant, you answered my next problem, how to hatch around windows done as cad lines. I realized too, that changes in cad elev. add time but now more than Acad.
  23. Would I have to save a duplicate layer with that window to use in the viewports? That would work except that it was so fast to build the condos from sketched notes and now I am spending just as much time creating correct elevations that I lost all that I gained. We are not really using the 3-D views as the project is too small to warrent the time it takes to set up lights and rendering and all that.
  24. I am having so many problems with elevations. I created a gable roof, added a point and reshaped the wall. That was good. Then I added a high up window to simulate the attic vent. However to show in elev and ortho views I had to put it in the wall. Now it is registering as being on the second floor, since the wall starts there. But it is above the 2nd story windows so in plan it looks riduculous. If I take it off the wall I don't have it in elevation.
  25. Yes, I do. I converted to polygons to try to hatch them but all the hidden line stuff is all there and when I try to hatch an area, they are in the way. It would be faster to retrace the elev in line than to delete everything!
