  1. From your description, my first guess would be that one or more of the plant symbols is corrupt. My experience suggests that simply deleting all instances of a corrupt symbol doesn't solve the problem since the symbol is still present in the file's resource library. Try running the "Purge Unused Objects ..." command in the Tools menu (on a copy) and see if that clears things up.
  2. No. Creating a new file and immediately selecting the Framing Member Tool produces the same result.
  3. Approx. half of the symbols currently included are of absolutely no use to me. The last things in the world I want are: a) more useless symbols cluttering up my hard drive; and b) having to waste time going through symbol libraries to identify and delete useless symbols.
  4. I'm having the same problem with VW/Architect/RW Mac. Unfortunately, I updated directly from 11.5 to 12.5 so I don't have the 12.0 framing tool to try milon's solution. Any other solutions?
  5. So are you saying that Nemetschek is bypassing application supervisors like Little Snitch?
  6. Skot, This 2.0 GHz G5 Dual/2.5 Mb RAM user agree with you: VW 12 is a dog. 11.5 ran 10-12% faster than 12 on our in-house benchmarking suite of animations and renderings, even after tweaking 12 according to NNA's suggestions to improve 12's rendering performance. Add to that all the rendering bugs we've run into, the incompatible PIOs and symbols, the buggy window and door symbols, the 3D stair bug, "live sections" that are neither live nor true sections, and the workflow disruptions, we'll be sticking with 11.5.
  7. If you still have VW 10 lying around, you could do a double translation, i.e., export the file to 10 then open the exported file in 10 and export to 9. It's a kludge, but it (mostly) works.
  8. Since the NNA reps are apparently reluctant or unwilling to answer your question, I'll answer it for them. Due to the idiotic way NNA implemented object referencing, you WILL have to reset all the links manually.
  9. Not familiar with 8.5, but have you checked the precision setting in the OIP? With that big a discrepancy, it sounds to me like it's set to "No Fractions."
  10. quote: Originally posted by Kevin: This is an old issue and certainly one that should be remedied. Batch printing will not automatically create uniquely numbered PDF images. The process requires the user to click the print button for each sheet and give that sheet the desired name. Once all sheets are printed they can be combined with various programs. Re:solve has a free batch printing plug-in for VW 11 (both Mac and Windows) that simplifies the process, although it doesn't automatically create unique file names. It's written for 11.0.1, but works just fine in 11.5.x.
  11. quote: Now, in OS 9 I remember you could drag a number of files to the printer icon on the desktop and the program would quietly launch and print everything without any input from the user. Is this possible with OS 10.3 or 10.4? Could this be done with a vectorworks script? OS X supports drag-n-drop printing; you just need to create a desktop printer icon to access it. To create a desktop printer icon: 1. Open the Print & Fax control panel. 2. Click the "Set Up Printers" button 3. Highlight the printer you want in the list of installed printers. 4. Select "Create Desktop Printer" (Command-Shift-D) from the "Printers" menu. Start dragging-n-dropping.
  12. OBTW, in regard to the question of memory leaking, memory leaking occurs when a program fails to discard data once it's done with it. (See the Wikipedia entry for more detail.) I haven't logged memory usage during renders, but it would not surprise me if RW is leaking memory since, several NNA employees have posted that VW is written in C and C++, which are both NOTORIOUS memory leakers.

Not exactly sure what you mean by "ease in/ease out control." If you mean transitions (fades, dissolves, wipes, etc.) into/out of/between clips, I usually do those in post-production rather than at the rendering stage, because I find I get a lot more precise control over effects in Final Cut Pro, or even iMovie, than I could get in RW. For a transition, I typically create a 1-2 second overlap between clips, align the overlapping frames in Final Cut Pro, and fade/dissolve between them.

I have noticed, that for every frame, that is completed, rendering takes longer. I started out with an estimate of 36 hours in the 'Time remaining' field. That was 3 days ago. I have now rendered 900 of 1200 frames and the 'Time remaining, estimate is currently 44 hours. In my experience, RW's rendering time estimate is less than worthless. quote: Has anyone found a good way to divide animations into several jobs - and get a seamless result?Check out the AnimationWorks plug-in by Julian Carr. If you regularly do RW animations and haven't checked out AnimationWorks, you really owe it to yourself to take a look at it. Not only will it save you significant time (and headaches) in setting up the animation, it can DRAMATICALLY reduce the rendering time, thanks to the ability to show and hide classes dynamically. I recently completed a 5-minute walkthrough of a church building that has 750 theater seats in the sanctuary. By "turning off" the visibility for the seats during the portions of the walkthrough where they would not have been visible in the scene (roughly 2:50), the rendering time was reduced from 73+ hours to just under 41 hours. (I rendered it without turning off class visibility over the Christmas break just to see how long it would take.) The other compelling feature of AnimationWorks is that once you've set up the animation path (which is a 3-d polyline, so it's easy to edit if you need to make changes to the path), you can divide the render into increments and render (or re-render) only the portions you need to. Here's the dialog box for AnimationWorks: This gives you the option of doing the render in pieces over several nights or dividing up a render between several computers and stiching the pieces together in QT Pro/iMovie/whatever video editing program you use. It also means that if you need to re-render a segment, you can do just that piece instead of having to do the whole thing. In the 5-minute walkthrough I referred to above, five French doors along a concourse (which were all open in the original render) were changed to picture windows. Instead of rendering the whole thing again, I used AnimationWorks to render just the 14-seconds of the walkthrough where the windows were visible (plus 1 sec. on either side as a transition), then replaced the footage in QuickTime Pro. [DISCLOSURE: I do not work for OzCAD or Julian Carr, and I am not compensated in any way for my recommendation.]

In other words, don't expect to see it until some time after the third or fourth generation of Intel Macs have shipped.
  17. Poser, DAZ Studio, Neo Office J, 4th Dimension's RAD/RDBMS Environment and WebSTAR Server suites, and several of the music notation programs I've looked at all have dockable toolbars/pallets, so they're certainly possible in OS X.
  18. Coming right up ... AFTER they fix the window PIO bug, and the door PIO bug, the hidden line rendering bug, the callout tool bug, the radial dimension bug, the show wall liines bug, the thresholds bug, ...
  19. quote: Originally posted by jnr: Like others, I buy the upgrades to show support for the new features they offer but I continue to use the previous faster more stable version to earn a living. I still have scars from the 9.0 nightmare release so you'll have to excuse me for being a little gun shy. I remember when softwrae companies took the time to optimize their code and do basic bug testing before they shipped their software instead of setting some artificial "release date" and shipping the product, bugs be damned. Seems to me if more customers held out waiting for a stable version instead of forking over another wad of dough just because a software company announced another update, the companies would take the time to get it right from the get-go.

Yet there was plenty of valid DTM , but as a test , I renamed the source layer. This sent the Site Model method into a tail spin. Apparently, the path to an invisible NNA DTM Data file was lost by the act of renaming the DTM Layer. Just another 'Temp file' issue. No big deal I just accepted the dialog and the next and then went ahead and updated the DTM as usual. Hey who needs warnings when your having fun ; ) That's all well and good, but it doesn't address my problem. I HAVE NOT renamed the layer with the source data or any other layers; I HAVE NOT added any layers to the source file; I have NEVER been able to generate a DTM in the source file; and AM NOT offered any options other than an "OK" button in the "ERROR: Not Enough Valid Data on the Specified Source Layer to build DTM" dialog box and clicking the "OK" button simply closes the dialog box; and if I select DTM Processor > Delete and click "YES," I get the message "Nothing to delete!"
  22. Emulation may be acceptable for occasional use of a stand-alone program, but, quite apart from the issue of whether or not Lotus Dominion Server or the other required programs will even run inside an emulated environment, emulation is simply not a viable option in a network environment.
  23. Thanks for the suggestions, Islandmon. I'll make a note of them for future reference, however, as I said in my initial post, there are no DTMs or DTM layers in the file since I never got far enough to generate one in the first place. I am becoming increasingly frustrated by NNA's technical no support. This is the fourth or fifth issue I've contacted tech support with directly by phone and by email in the past year that I've received ZERO response to. Even here in this thread, when I asked for a clarification, I'm not even given the courtesy of a response. I'm sorry, NNA, but that is simply unacceptable. Unlike many who post here, I'm not yet deeply entrenched enough in Vectorworks that I can't or won't switch to another program if I find another program that provides similar functionality and actually offers technical support.
