  1. EVERYONE should write to Reed and ask them to support IFC in their new SMARTBIM online library of products instead of just Revit. This is very important! Someone at Nemetschek should get on the phone with other Cad manufacturers and get them to start to lobby REED to support IFC instead of just Revit. Also someone from the IAI should call Reed. Autodesk is pulling a fast one here to make Revit the industry standard instead of IFC. This is a beachhead that can't be allowed to stand.
  2. just sent my query to Reed. I encourage to EVERYONE to ask why they are supporting Revit only instead of IFC. This is a new effort on Reed's part, and we may have influence at this point.
  3. I think Autodesk is doing it indirecting, regardless of what they may be doing at technical organizations. They almost have to go through the motions, not to be accused of monopolization of the market. The reality is that they crushing IFC through through their market partnerships where they are insuring that Revit is the standard for BIM. For instance Reed Construction Data has created a large BIM library of products called SMARTBIM through its links with its Sweets catalog. ALL of these models are ONLY in Revit format- NOT IFC. They are giving lip service to IFC, while pushing for a Revit dominated world through its powerful and extensive network. How did Nemetschek allow this too happen ? Why don't you push Reed to offer their models in IFC also. It means now that the primary manufacture BIM resource base formatted in Revit - not IFC. As far as I know VW can't import rfa files. VW will need to develop this functionality if its going to survive in a revit dominated world.
  4. Autodesk I think wants IFC to die! Long live revit. Hope VW and Nemetshek have a lobby for IFC.
  5. I wish VW had the multiview/live window component like Revit. Updating viewports gets VERY old. Personally though I haven't used Revit, but I've used AutoCad and I much perfer VW, and the price is certainly better. Unfortunately though I think the global AEC industry is probably going to be supporting Revit more than VW. The IFC doesn't seem to be taking on much traction with material vendors who are building most of their products for a BIM librarys in Revit. I hope VW keeps pace with being able to export and import BIM models with Revit while keeping the BIM intelligence. I know IFC is suppose to address this issue, but I think Autodesk is downplaying IFC and not supporting it very well, as a market dominance strategy. VW is very good software for its price.
  6. Jeff, Thanks for the heads up on that thread, it was very good intro. I think the worksheets are fairly flexible. Hopefully I can set up some standard worksheets. As BIM develops, translating this information into material quantities is going to become more and more important and valuable. Obviously there will always have to be the caveats about preciseness, but with iteration of the software hopefully this gap will close. Peter, Thanks for the sample drawings, that was great to see how much you can develop the worksheets. Here are the takeoff's I'd like to setup up for my company. 1. Masonry (CMU & Brick) 2. Lumber (floors, walls, and Roofs) & bolts (People recommended not using framer, but seems to be ok to me. Will study further). 3. Sheathing (this and the following items will need to do quantities from component pieces within wall styles - is this possible) 4. Siding 5. Roofing It would be nice if there was a central repository of worksheets that people could contribute to and pull from. Is there such a place?
  7. Can you area calcs for componets, ie sheathing, siding, GWB etc?
  8. I have a download of the latest 2011 and I agree that it is very buggy.
  9. Peter, Thanks for the info. Yes I'd love to see an example, as I am a rookie with worksheets, and am a bit intimidated by the uphill learning curve I'll have to go through during all my "free" time. Again thanks.
  10. You can import through Sketchup but the photographic information is lost. John
  11. Any chance VW could do a white paper on residential material takeoff? This would be VERY help to a number of users.
  12. So there is no way to import Google earth topo with the ariel photo? Most CAD software has this ability.
  13. Will be curious to see what you come up with. We are a D&B firm and we really want to take advantage of the database for takeoffs, but are daunted by the potential complexities of this.

    Wall Framer

I am not looking for how to frame but as a tool to assist in takeoffs. I realize that we will have modify these numbers, but hopefully it can get us closer quicker than what we are doing now. We'll do a cross check with our traditional method to see how much of a discrepancy there is. That said, its only if we can make the wall framer work. The class selection is the hang up, and am not what to do. All the intuitive classes aren't working.

    Wall Framer

Yes that works. But the problem I am having is when I go to select a class I hit new and there is a long list of classes to choose from. I keeping selecting different class, but keeping told that there is nothing in the class to frame. so far, I have chosen the wall class, and the component class and still no love. Arggg there is a long list of classes to chose from and I don't have the time to systematicaly go through each class to find the one it likes. Any suggestions?

    Wall Framer

Umm tried that no luck. I just figure out which class it is looking for. We are a design build firm and we are trying to simplify our materials takeoff by doing more BIM. Directing us to any papers or videos on this would be helpful. Thanks

    Wall Framer

I am trying to get the wall framer to do a framing package, and it keeps saying that the class selected doesn't have anything to frame. I checked the wall style to see if I am selecting the components class and I am. So I have selected the correct class according to the wall style. but the framing script says there is nothing in that class to create framing with. Any and all help is appreciated. John
  18. OK the attributes settings did the trick. I did notice though in B&W only that some of the perimeter and lines of the components don't show up. Thanks!
  19. I am trying to get a section viewport to show the component parts of a slab and wall. I have selected to show component parts and to have them merge in the advanced settings, but all it does is show the outling without any of the materials. I've also played around with the different foreground settings. What am I doing wrong?
  20. Our firm hasn't upgraded our vectorworks 2008 due to the economic downturn. In looking at 2011 it looks like we would essentially have to buy a new lic. While this is discouraging at the same time it is liberating, since we can now look at a variety of options. I am curious to know what other people would suggest as comparably priced or less expensive options. So much of our initial design is now done in sketchup, we are almost looking for a documentation software. While we like vectorworks, I think its unaffordable with no upgrade path. We probably should have upgraded earlier, but with almost no work no money to upgrade with. Curious to hear people's thoughts.
  21. Jeff, I have written them several weeks ago, with no reply back. Unfortunately I think the train has left the station on McGraw-Hill. VW will need to develop a method (software) which will allow us to import those products into VW easily and effectively. This will become a more significant issue in the future as the industry starts to demand BIM solutions for projects. I don't want to use Autodesk products, but maybe forced to by the need to have BIM objects in Building models. I suspect Autodesk pushed this hard with McGraw Hill early on knowing that they could dominate the market with REVIT they way they did with AutoCad by getting the dominate players in the industry to support their format exclusively. Perhaps VW and other companies should collaborate and pull funds to develop a conversion software for REVIT objects into IFC objects. John

    Sky background

How do create a sky background for camera view?? Or how do I get the sky dome to render like a sky?
  23. I was at Sweets.com looking for some products and noticed that they are developing BIM products but only for REVIT. What is the deal with that?? I thought that there was going to be a universal library based upon the IFC standard! If the industry is going to support REVIT only we are doomed in developing BIM for our clients. Any thoughts?
  24. Does anyone have symbol for a small boat (ie boston whaler) looking at head on or from the back? Drawing a dock and would like to show a boat in it. Thanks, John
