I think they were high poly. It does make the file very heavy and clunky to work with.

Interesting the announcement today by Globe Plants and VectorWorks. Unfortunately it's Image Props that they are collaborating on.

Yeah..I feel like I can make my own image props.  I'm wondering if its possible to purchase the high-poly, and create a copy in Vectorworks and simplify the mesh so its not as laggy.  Not sure if that's possible, but I might have to purchase some and see if it works out.

  2. No matter which render setting or graphics quality I use, my edit subdivision tool creates incorrect geometry.  My circle shows up as a square; cylinders and spheres as cubes, and the torus & ring are both very faceted despite being my settings being on Very High. Aside from split & extrude mode, I can't do any other manipulation of the incorrect geometry.  Even on the geometry that was produced properly, the crease mode does not work.

    Any advice?

    hey @designit

love your work. I'm also a Sydney based designer and have wondered this too for a while.

Currently I am on Vectorworks 23 and have found rendering in Vectorworks sometimes to be amazing. I am using globe plants and building my own ones at the moment. I also use Twinmotion from time to time but find the Vectorworks ones to be enough for the clients I work with. Attached are 2 images of a current project where I am using globe plants within Vectorworks. It isn't a final quality render but it does have a heliodon, plus it's just a screenshot. I also need to pull back oil the vibrancy of the colours but I do that in the final quality renders. In others I have done recently the reflections on glass and water have been amazing within Vectorworks. I've also played with the animation features within Vectorworks.

Send me a DM if you want to compare notes. I'm often on the north shore.

Ben, hope you don’t mind me reviving the this thread with a question.

Are those low poly or high poly globe plants?  I’m looking to purchase a few collections of globe plants for use in both twinmotion & vwx, and was wondering whether they were low or high poly, and which file format you downloaded as it appears they have multiple formats to purchase.

    Hello

Can we get some answers to the questions here? Does anyone track these?

I'm also looking for training help to move our office from 2d site design to 3d with Vectorworks.

Are there training videos that specifically teach the workflow flow from Concept Design, utilizing Survey to begin building a design based on a Concept Design.

I know there a videos on the University, but I haven't found one that specifically follows the work flow using a survey and concept plan built off the survey and following a design to completion.

    Thank you.

I recommend taking the Landmark professional certification course.  That course goes over importing topographic surveys & existing tree surveys. You then learn how to use most of the landmark tools on a large mixed use site (has commercial & residential properties.) It goes more in depth than the basic landmark essentials class and the only thing it doesn’t cover is viewports/sheet layers for producing design documents.  It’s very helpful for understanding how many of the tools interact with the site model.

All the things you are encountering are probably due to deform tools.   They change the nature of the model.

If you just need to round the ends, have you tried using the 3D fillet tool?

I was trying to use the methods show in the video series, but thanks for the workaround idea.  Not sure why the deform tool was skewing the rail in 2024.  I tried the same process in 2023, and it worked perfectly.  2024 crashed on me several times yesterday: I'm not technical, but I'm wondering if it is an installation issue.  Attempting a reinstall, and hoping for the best.

The skatepark video's methods of construction as related to the deform tool hasn't changed much in terms of the resulting geometry.

The pick order and notion of the "screen plane" has changed.

Perhaps you did not use the correct snap or working plane when you executed the bend.  That could result in a distortion of the end circle.

An easy way to check for that circular face being distorted is to use the Push/Pull tool to extrude it.  If it is skewed, you will see it pretty quickly.

Assuming the end of the pipe is flat and circular....the easiest way to set the hemisphere is to use Autoplane and Diameter mode.  This will allow you to set the hemisphere on the circular end.  Your first point should be the "Midpoint" of the circular face, the second snap point is the "Object/ Align Start 'Axis' " with a radius called out which matches your pipe diameter opposite of your first point.  That put it where it belongs.  See image below for a more graphic explanation of this.

It's always a good idea to save prior to using any of the 3D editing tools on geometry like this.  Bending and Fillets of cylindrical or irregularly curved surfaces can make many programs struggle and crash if there is a flaw in the geo.

Jeff, I was able to perfectly recreate the drawing in 2023 and I used the same basic process:

I found the center point of the rail, and clicked there to establish the working plane.  Then used the hemisphere tool on diameter mode and clicked from one edge to another.

For some reason 2024 was skewing the shape of the pipe when using the deform tool.  After the first deform and I lose the ability to snap to any sort of smart point within the geometry.  I tried toggling all my snapping cues off and back on, hoping it would detect the points again, but it didn't help.  I've tried executing the deform with different views (relative to working plane, relative to layer plane) and I still lose all snapping ability after the first bend.  After restarting my computer, I was able to execute a bent rail on 2024 that wasn't skewed and I was able to use the hemisphere tool to make a perfect fitting end cap.  However, a few minutes afterwards the program crashed and upon restarting the rail skewing returned.

My best guess is that I had an installation issue, although it could be that my outdated MacBook Pro (pre-M series) is no longer able to meet the system demands.

  6. Running into issues using the deform tool to replicate the curved rail in the skatepark/freeform modeling series of videos.  The video is quite old, and I'm using 2024 to recreate the project.

    1.  Once I've used the deform tool on one portion of the rail, I am no longer able to get a smart point/centerline for the 2nd & 3rd bends.  The centerline is able to be used for the first bend. (I'm using the Bend solid & Finite mode as seen in the videos)

    2.  When using the hemisphere tool to create rail ends, the rounded portions do not match the shape of the rail.  The deform tool may have changed the rail profile from circle to a skewed rounded shape. (two screenshot attached-the rail that had less bend seemed to better match up with the hemisphere which is why I believe the deform tool is changing the overall shape of the rail).

Is there something I've messed up along the way or has there been some changes to the deform tool?  How can I make my drawings more accurate.

Yes you're correct: the Slab style you're using has Materials assigned to the components:

And if a component or object uses a Material the Material attributes will override the class attributes. So you need to edit the Slab style + for each component uncheck the 'Use material' box:

Then the components will default to the class settings.

Alternatively, you can edit the Materials in question + change 'surface style' from 'texture' to 'class':

This way the component will keep the Material but will take it's texture from the class...

You're probably better sticking with classes at this stage, whilst you complete the course, but when you're ready I'd highly recommend getting to know Materials: used in conjunction with Wall/Slab/Roof/Hardscape/Landscape Area components they are very powerful + a great addition to VW. It's a shame the Intermediate Concepts course hasn't been updated to reflect this.

This was extremely helpful Tom.  Many thanks!

  8. Howdy,

This is not the first time I've had issues with discrepancies when following along with tutorials, but I cannot figure this one out.  I'm on the "Cutting holes in the slabs" portion of the small residential model section, of the intermediate concepts course. Around the 10:40 mark of the video, the instructor changes the textures of the floor assembly but I'm not able to recreate it.  There are a couple differences between 2019 & 2022 workspaces that have been problems in previous tutorials and learning paths, so I'm hoping y'all can assist me so I can solve my own problems in the future.

In 2019, the plywood decking is in the component-decking class, but in 2022 its in the component-structure class (component-decking doesn't exist).  Not sure if it matters, but 2022 also has a materials column that doesn't exist in 2019 workspace.

The instructor then goes on to edit the class' texture, which changes the appearance of the plywood to that of a hardwood.  Whenever I attempt the same, (remember, mine is only in the component-structure not component-decking) the appearance does not change.  It's still the same OSB appearance. Is there something that has changed between 2019 & 2022, possibly related to the materials that would prevent the change from happening?

  9. My resource manager show all the different file folders that might contain hatches, gradients, symbols, objects, etc.  When I try to click the files, it says "there are no items in this view".  This is for both Premium & Vectorworks libraries.  I'm able to access the missing files through the attributes palette, but not able to through the resource manager.  Can you recommend a way to fix this?  Uninstall and Reinstall libraries?
