  1. k, I think you are on the right track. There are a many ways that you could incorporate workgroup referencing with VW depending on how you draw a typical project. What we do is break down a project by plans/elevations/sections/details/etc... where each of those get a separate vw file. I then reference all those files into a print set vw file where all my viewports/drawing labels/ title blocks live. This way I can open this print set file, update and print the entire set while others are working on the referenced files. This seems to work for us and is quite flexible for the many different project sizes we have. If we were to ever get a very large project where it would not make sense to bring all the referenced files into one print set file, then I could imagine adapting this method to have multiple print set files such as Arch, Mech, Elec, Struct. Just keep in mind that this is something that you will need to see what works best for you. You could break the files down however you like.
  2. It could be a number of things. Check the attributes with and without the wall selected. Also check attributes assigned to the class via the organization dialog. You can also try it in a new blank document to further troubleshoot the issue.
  3. I have not used Revit to a great extent but I have played with it. Many have commented on how rigid Revit is compared to VW. You mentioned Revit is easier to learn but I have read the opposite. I would lean toward it being not as intuitive but that is based on a brief experience with Revit. Could you elaborate on that front?
  4. Lucylou, I think it has something to do with your jamb depth. Try playing with that value so that is is a bit more "realistic". even changing the jamb depth to 52, it seems to work
  5. It should say center. I zoomed in on a window I had drawn and it did snap to the center. Object is not the same as center, sorry if that was confusing.
  6. What is described above is a workaround. This is not the way it should be. Space objects should have an option to assign the precision just like a dimension object can so you can draw to a high precision but have dimension values displayed to the nearest desired unit. I sometimes like to display room dimensions to the nearest inch but I still need to be able to draw at a higher precision.
  7. Make sure to draw any dimensions in the annotation mode of the viewport. I am able to snap to objects that are inside of viewports but I did notice the smart cursor did not display the word 'center', it said 'object', for window centers.
  8. Perhaps you have the black and white only setting activated for the document as a default. Go to File->Document Settings->Document Preferences. Then in the Display Tab, make sure the "Black and White Only" is unchecked. There is also this option for Viewports under the advanced settings via the object info palette.
  9. yes, go the the settings of the specific window and then go to the view tab. There you will find the "Use Part Line Styles" where you can specify line styles to different parts of a window.
  10. Great info there! Thanks for sharing.
  11. Not that I know of. Curves are created by little lines. Vector Depot has hatches and a whole bunch of other goodies. http://www.vectordepot.com/Hatches1.shtml
  12. In a separate file I sometimes "explode" all the smart objects to just lines and fills. I select all the objects to be exported copy them into a new file, convert them to group then ungroup. That way there are no PIOs for them to mess with. Of course this is only for sending 2D cad files.
  13. Usually we just need to give the fascia a different color. To do this you can just select the roof object and give it a solid color via the attributes palette. That with the texture assigned to the roof gives us a quick result.
  14. VW can import a 3DS file for 3D objects into VW. I would use that.
  15. The chain extrude tool in the building tool set does the trick too.
  16. I don't think you can change these. If you rename these classes, I think they just end up recreated themselves. I have just let them coexist with our office standard classes.
  17. Try purging the file of items that are not used. Tools-->Purge Unused Objects.
  18. Also, try modifying a copy of the current workspace so that you can always revert to the default if needed. You certainly can make VW look, act and feel a lot like AutoCad with the short cut keys and workspace. You can even have a black background and colored lines... ugh. I train a lot of new users and none have ever said that "VW is too difficult." In fact many say "why doesn't AutoCad do it this way, its much easier." Here's a link to common terminology for people coming from AutoCad that I find useful. http://www.objectofdesign.com/2007/06/30/terminology-autocad-vs-vectorworks/ Enjoy. DanC
  19. Got it. Here's what I did. Opened the original image file in photoshop and turned up the brightness and reduced the contrast. Then created the image prop with a transparency mask. I tried to just play with the sliders without editing the original image file but that wasn't what I was looking for. But the one one the right is spot on. Thanks for your help Dave.
  20. Didn't mean to suggest ownership the first attachment. I found that image on the net somewhere to illustrate what I would like to achieve as a concept. Agreed it's a bit image prop heavy. ;-) I'll give the contrast sliders a try and see if that works. Thanks DanC
  21. Is there a way to get image props to have both a transparent mask transparency and have plain transparency at the same time? I would like to place the image props in a model yet have the main focus be the objects beyond the image props. I have tried putting them in a transparent design layer but that seems to not work in final quality RW. I have also tried creating a VP with that layer grayed but the does not work either. any ideas other than doing this in photoshop? thanks in advance
  22. you can double click from the list of saved views from the navigation palette.
  23. I agree that the new system needs some more work. It seems to work well with a rectangle that is rotated at something other than 90 degrees. I think they should either put in both fields, the delta x/y and the width/height. Or just default the rotation angle to 0 if the angle is a multiple of 90 degrees.
  24. What is nice about VW is that it can be used with varying degrees of implementation. You don't have to use all of the features if you so choose. I for one do not do complete 3D models for all projects as some projects do not warrant it. But being aware of the functionality of certain items is very valuable whether you use it or not. I like reading about how others do things differently.
