  1. Why won't these two surfaces combine? Same layer, class, etc.  I just changed the line color and thickness of one to differentiate one from the other.  After selecting them I right-click select add surface and the inner surface disappears.  The larger was created with the rectangle tool and the smaller faceted one with the 2d polygon tool.  The OI palette says they are both polygons.

  2. I have several of these instances where I need a wall recess.  Some with doors, some are just wall features.  Is there some easy magic way (that one key to press) of doing this?

I think using two wall styles is easy for plan view but then you have two walls not one continuous.  Will that matter?

    Thanks,

    JM

  3. So the sheet layers are not coming through cleanly?  This is a pretty nasty looking dwg.  I think you need a big cup of coffee and slowly click, check and turn classes or layers off to get where you need to be.  Was this something else (file type) before it became a .dwg?

  4. I started to add a callout, but decided no.  However it had populated the legend.  Now I have a number of a keynote, with the note X.  I can remove the X by unchecking the box in the OI palette.

I also see re-use unused positions.  Can someone explain how to do this?  I don't want a blank in my or an X in my legend.

    Thanks

  5. A strange thing has happened on the last couple of projects.  In one case a few dimensions (text only) changed color from black to blue.  In the other case both dim. lines and text changed.  In some of the instances they appear as black in design layers but blue in sheet layer viewport, in some cases they appear as black but print blue.

What could be going wrong?  I've checked text styles, and the individual dimension strings to see if the attribute was changed but all are set 'by class' and the class is black.

  6. Sorry I'm kinda dumb with VW, but when you say you created a bounding box, did you use the rectangle tool or is there another tool hide somewhere? Are you trying to create a viewport over another viewport? I tried with the rectangle tool but received an entirely different message.  I have to start with View>create viewport, then set up a crop for the viewport.

  7. I got it to work.!

I started a fresh file,  created a slab layer: top at '0' , created a foundation layer: top at -10.25 (thickness of joists and pw).  Created two walls; one stemwall 24" height, top bound = layer elevation, top offset 0" , bottom bound = layer elev. bottom offset =-24".  Second wall (footing) 8" height, top bound= layer elevation, top offset -24" (or bottom of stem wall, bottom bound = layer elevation, bottom offset = -32" (stem height + footing ht).

then in iso view I changed numbers and watched results.  now it makes sense to me.

Thank you for your patience and help!

Now putting in that 2x6 mudsill between the slab and top of stemwall.....

  8. I got it to work but don't understand VW methodology at all.

I created a test file: foundation layer elevation of -10.25" (presumably top of foundation) with a wall height of 32" (8" footing, 24" stemwall).  Created a foundation wall type with height of 24" top bound by layer elev. It automatically gave me a top offset of 24" (which I honestly do not comprehend), bottom bound by layer elevation, bottom offset of 0.

Then the footing (wall) 16" thick wall x 8" tall.  In the OIP  the height is -8" and top offset is -8".  Graphically it looks correct.  In an iso view it looks correct.

Why is the height of this wall a negative number while the height of the stemwall a positive number when both are bound by the layer elevation?

  9. trying to place a continuous footing with a conc. wall on top.  I have created a wall type for the footing 16" wide x 8" tall.  In the Wall Pref's, Insertion options I find options for height, top bound (then a plethora of options) Top offset, bottom bound (another plethora of options) and bottom offset.  What is the relation of top bound to top offset, and bottom bound to bottom offset? and why can't it just be "z" ?  I want the bottom of the footing at -40.25" .  The layer elevation is to to of foundation which is -10.25".  Foundation wall is 24" .

I realize all the options are there to construct some complicated walls.  This is a simple and common situation can someone dummy it down for me?

  10. So I am trying to use the cabinet tool to layout a kitchen.  A lot of options like with all VW tools, prompts are not always descriptive enough to let user  anticipate outcome.  For instance I started in a corner with a base cabinet with blind corner.  Option for the blind is left, right or none.  Assuming that one is viewing the cabinet from face of cabinet I selected left as it will be the "blind side" and of corse the cabinet comes in with the blind portion on the right. When placing the next cabinet 90 deg. to the 'blind' portion pushed my wall out approximately 2".  This was very helpful!  (sarcasm noted) .

No scribe tool found.  No apparent provision for a dishwasher opening.  Space the cabinets apart and place a separate piece of counter top is the solution I am guessing.

I'm sure I can customize the daylights out of this tool and write scripts to solve everything.  But why?  Especially when home depot can literally drag someone from the street and in five minutes  or less using their kitchen tool layout a set of kitchen cabinets.  Also typically we like to align the upper cabinets at the top of the cabinet. (a few exceptions due to design or appliances etc) but instead we have to start at bottom of cab to FF.  I guess not a big deal, just more math to keep in you head.

So do you guys place cabinets and then just create polygons or rectangles - solid fill and connect them to create a smooth surface for top plan 2d plan views?

In the OIP (see attached) what are these options for?  I found them and thought great! I can set class for counter tops and in sheet view port turn off the base  cabs and get the representation of counter tops that I want.  No no no doesn't work that way, so what are these options for?

I know I'm complaining and the fault is mine for not knowing how to use the tools,  so a couple of useful suggestions would be great.

    Thanks.

  11. Remodeling a small home and typically on a demo plan I show all the items to be demolished and removed as dashed lines.

Easily done with walls, doors & windows. Can't seem to get it to work with plumbing fixtures.  Any suggestions.  I have a separate

class for demo items with its own attributes...dashed lines etc.

  12. Some really good ideas.  I've struggled with posts.  Used the column tool, extruded rectangles, and wall tool.  Never tried a floor object however.  Seems like VW could provide a solution.  Same with "I" joists, can't believe VW does not provide.

Question; how do you do mudsills?  An extrude, a wall or some other method?

  13. In every office I have worked in, and all the plan sets I have looked at a simple surface mount incandescent light fixture symbol (I know they are on way out) in 2d plan view looks like the fixture in the middle.  While VW symbol is the one on the left.  Meanwhile the simple circle  often indicates a recessed fixture. I like that VW puts the R in recessed, why not a P in the pendant instead of a black filled circle which then resembles what the majority use for smoke detectors?

Does anyone use these symbols or do you just use your own?

    Screenshot 2016-12-15 11.04.00.png

  14. Alan that almost worked.  Yes the text became visible after converting symbol to group, but the text along path is still a 3d object. So when I tried to insert it in the title block which is a symbol rather that a sheet border/titleblock then I received this warning.  I think I have to come to grips with the fact that this is not for 2d work and just say uncle.

    Screenshot 2016-11-18 14.37.27.png

  15. Wow.  Text along path 3d only.  Hmm.

Well I will have to make it work as a group.  Not so convenient but least it stays in tact.  It is an engineers seal.  A couple of concentric circles with doodads and text in a curve.  I can't imagine ever needing this as a 3d object.  VW in all its glory and might can't do it.  Hmm.

As it turns out it doesn't work as a group because the title block I need to add it to is a symbol (yes a 2d symbol).  So I have to create a title block for this project.  Guess I must learn there are no shortcuts with VW.

    Happy Friday everyone!
