Hi Ed, a Vectorworks Specialist in the UK has very kindly provided the fix. In the top right of the screen is a dropdown triangle/list of icons, about two thirds down this list is Show Other Objects While In Edit Mode, check this. A new icon displays that allows you to show other objects during edit mode Many thanks Andrew

Hi Ed, I'm having the same issue with the hardscape and everything else disappearing when I click edit surface modifiers...
