  1. thx Tom, I knew they had been improvements, will search them out to better my process. carpalmer
  2. totally agree with Altivec. I use VW & RW for presentations and main gripe is texturing and modeling. 3D modeling interface is awkward compared to what I've seen in Sketchup (push-pool on the fly, and some organic / fluid shapes are impossible with VW. When I model in VW I need to keep switching between orthographic views and often is frustrating and difficult. Is there a better way? Any good tutorials? I've been using VW since Minicad days, so consider myself an advanced user, but would like to know if there's a better way to model... No point in having VR with low quality renders. carpalmer
  3. click on image prop and then go to Object Info and unclick the auto rotate option... carpalmer
  4. for tree shadows I sometimes eliminate the "auto rotate" option for the image prop, and I manually adjust it so that it is close to perpendicular to light source in order to get full shadows. I also sometimes add additional image props out of view (behind camera) in order to obtain shadows on the ground ahead... see attached carpalmer
  5. Thx MK and Jim. Very instructive. Got model to work with unified view, but want to give the DLVP technique a go since I know its the better way, especially if more people are working on a project... thx again Carlos Palmer
  6. Using vw14 and want to get a 3 story bldg model going, and don't know how to link layers anymore. Apparently I'm meant to use DLVP, can anyone direct me to a tutorial or give me some directions? Have unified view ticked, but that doesn't do anything. thx\ carpalmer
  7. Phil, curious if you've tried the Maxwell rendering option. Thx for reply, Carlos
  8. Hi Phil, I have never tried importing RW textures into Artlantis, but I know there's a way to extract RW texture images... so it should be viable. As far as lights, I don't think they export into Artlantis. Sorry couldn't be more helpful... How r u liking Artlantis 5? I have version 3, but considering upgrading. I only use Artlantis very sporadically, since I'm usually satisfied with RW's quality, but always nice to have the option to have a better rendering. Have u tried the Maxwell rendering engine? cheers Carlos
  9. working on upgrading my computer... looking at quad cores, but is VW13 multi threaded? How much sense does a Solid State Drive make? I do fairly "heavy" drawings (150MB) and often use RENDERWORKS and ARTLANTIS... thanks for insight Carpalmer

  11. Have been working on some interior renderings using RW and applying hidden line to foreground. As drawing got more advanced VW13 refused to render lines, got blank VP, and "out of memory" message. Tried rendering hidden lines only, also rendering in design layer, but to no avail... then exported to VW12 and it rendered hidden lines like a charm! So pls look into it, also had similar issue with "clipping surface" command for grille work pattern: VW13 failed to do it properly (leaving some unclipped areas), exported to VW12 and it worked fine! Pls address both items since these are fundamental assets to the program... many thx Carpalmer

  13. I agree that this is important. VW is sweet on many levels, but greatly lacking in modelling capabilities, especially of the organic shape type... I'm currently looking into Rhino, and would expect VW to have a functioning interface with it. carpalmer
  14. looking into creating curved surfaces beyond VW's capabilities, anyone using Rhino in conjunction with VW? Modelling complex shapes in Rhino and importing into VW for final model? thx Carpalmer

  16. yeah, I had the same thing happen to me after I was told issue had been fixed. I had to go through the VW uninstall in windows 7, then download VW link (for some reason VW13 WONT install frm DVD!). So after lengthy download opened VW and checked for updates (SP1) and got same erroragain! frustrating pls advise Carpalmer
  17. can anyone tell me how to get to these in VW 13. They are not an option under "import"... thx Carpalmer
  18. how do I project property lines, rivers, roadways onto modeled surface of terrain? pls advise thx Carpalmer
  19. hi all, looking into getting better renderings in MUCH less time with Artlantis 3.0. But before I buy, can anyone tell me if I'll be able to export directly from my older VW 2008 and still benefit from the corresponding plug in as far as getting automatic updates in Artlantis? Any other relevant comments also welcome! Many thanks, Carpalmer

  21. last time I checked you could not assign classes to the different wall components... if this is still so, what is the work-around for adjusting wall thicknesses in Structural vs Architectural plans? ie: concrete block walls in structural drawings are 7 5/8" thick, but are thicker in architectural drawings to account for drywall and other finishes. Any good tips that don't over-complicate the drawings? Many thanks carpalmer
  22. looking to download some ELEGANT HDR sky backgrounds, and NOT the dramatic sunsets available everywhere any suggestions? thx carpalmer
