  1. We have a good success rate in our office putting PDF's into Pagemaker 7. The lines come out crisp and colour is excellent! I think it's possible to have PDF's in inDesign as well.
  2. gjefcoate: I know it's not a solve all, but have you considered using a USB hub in the office?
  3. Does Acad allow hatches to be associated with 3D geometry? I don't think AutoCAD does for standard 3D objects...(I'm open to correction here) I think only ADT does. ArchiCAD allows 3D vector hatches, but that's ?3400 vs. ?1200 for VW11... -jto
  4. Jees, That IS how they build in the UK...! We may as well draw with crayons on toilet paper!
  5. It's been updated for V11. Maybe it works now? -Jacques.
  6. I've got no idea if this will help, as I'm not too sure regarding the ins and outs of referencing in VW, but wouldn't the 'Rotate Drawing' plug-in on http://www.vectorbits.com/ help? -Jacques
  7. Jim, Thanks, I will give it a try. I was trying to find something similar to the battered wall in ArchiCAD but I suppose your method works just as well. Have you ever had to deal with irregular shaped walls in plan. ie. the wall starts off at say 200mm and changes in plan to about 400mm thick, then back again? Mostly I find this in old listed buildings or barns where the rubble/cob walling varies in thickness. It's really annoying to model the walls and then cut holes for doors/windows... Thanks again. Jacques.
  8. Is it possible to create a cant or battered wall that I can put windows and doors in? The wall forms the base or plinth of a building and existing 'basement' structure is being converted to rooms. The existing rubble plinth slopes up about 5 degrees from the vertical. I would prefer not to use solid operations. Thanks in advance. -Jacques. *** VW 11 OS 10.3.8, 1 Ghz Tibook, 512MB ram, ATI 9000.
  9. Well, I should have said "..spend $100 on it, yet!" I will look into the NNA training CD's as well as the "VW by Project" book. I may just bite the bullet and get Jonathan's tutorials, having read that users on the board are very happy with the content. Thanks all.
  10. I have now for a VERY long time evaluated (And I'm pretty sick of it actually...) CAD software for the MAC platform and am 99% sure I will be going the VW Architect route. I've previously bought Tom Baer's book for VW 10 but found it dry, boring and not very intuitive. May as well look at the user manual... Can anybody give a recommendation re some training manuals, CD's, DVD's etc for VW 11? I unfortunately can't afford Jonathan's training manuals at $100. Thanks.
  11. If the temperature of the G5 gets too high, the system will enter sleep mode to stop the cpu from burning out...Do your fans come on full blast when it renders?
  12. I seem to be missing the OpenGL hardware accel. while editing symbols? It works fine when I exit the symbol...? Is this a bug? OS X 10.3.6 TiBook 1ghz 512mb ram. ATI 9000 Mob. VW 11 edit: Have just found that when exiting a symbol and the last command was PAN, 2D accel. WILL BE DISABLED in normal drawing (try panning around) area until the PAN command is deselected, the selection tool selected and the PAN command reselected. Surely a bug? 13. I'm going to throw a spanner in the works with some a question and some observations, based on comparrisons with other programs. 1) Is OpenGL the problem here, or the underlying code of the program (VW)? 2) The reason why I ask whether it's code related, is because I took the file eddie (eddy?) provided and did the same tests with SketchUp and ArchiCAD. The results...Well, an import takes about 8 seconds...The same as VW11. Good! 'Select all' takes 32 ish seconds on my 1Ghz Tibook with 512mb ram with VW11. It takes 1.5 seconds in Sketchup and ArchiCAD on the same machine! Please NNA....WHY? It takes the same time roughly in each case to deselect... Surely, if Graphisoft and @Last software can do it on 10.3, why can't NNA? Just some thoughts. -JT
  14. I wouldn't know. "yeah, those links don't get us to the book..." They do get you to the stockist of the book. Maybe you can drop them an e-mail and ask? I've sent them and e-mail, but no reply yet. If I hear anything usefull I'll post it here. -JT
  15. A new Vectorworks book has been released by Louis B. Smith AIA and Ray Massaccesi. It's called "Vectorworks by Project" and can be found at www.nicholasbooks.com This is covered a bit more on the Architosh site. -J
  16. And my output. VW11.01, TiBook 1 Ghz, 512mb RAM ATI Radeon 9000 (64 Megs), OS 10.3.5: Import: 9 sec Select: 35 sec (!!!??? On a 800mhz P3 AutoCAD 2000 it takes 1 sec!!!) Deselect: 36 sec Select all: 35 sec Deselect all: 34 Open GL: Low/Tex: 2 sec Low/Tex/Nurbs: 2 sec Med/Tex/Nurbs: 2.5 sec Hi/Tex/Nurbs: 2.5 sec VH/Tex/Nurbs: 2 sec Final RW: 8 sec I did this test on my Tibook just to show you how SLOW it really is to select and deselct something. Now for somebody who is trying to work on a sub 1 Ghz system, I only have sympathy for, as it cannot be fun! Having said that, OpenGL, and RW seem quite OK for my system. All permissions repaired etc for the test. No other apps running.
  17. The energy saver setting for the newer G5's will actually affect the processor bus. The term Apple and IBM use is bus slewing. (yep, not slowing, but slewing) It just cuts the bus speed either in half. I think on some machines it cuts it back 1/3. -JT
  18. APE Design: Can understand where you're coming from. Just as an afterthought...Have you checked your disks etc...repaired permissions? Also, is your energy saver settings set to Highest Performance...? Must say though...even at Automatic it should trash an older 1.8 Ghz Pentium! -JT
  19. I think a lot of the speed issues stem from the issue with VW still not being a native OS X application. It's seems to stuck with it's old carbon code and that is holding back performance. Graphisoft dumped support for OS 9 with ArchiCAD version 8.1 and the program has come about in leaps and bounds and is now rather speedy in version 9. Question is, how much does NNA value it's OS 9 userbase? BTW: I have felt for ages that the linetype thickness bug is OS 9 based. Try printing a diagonal line and a vert. line of same thickness to PDF...They don't look the same in the PDF file!!! It's NOT a printer driver problem, as I don't have any printers installed!!!! I also don't think OS 10.3 is to blame for speed...And OS 10.4 is only going to add more eye-candy, requireing you to upgrade once again... my 2p.
  20. quote: Originally posted by G-Pang: Photoshop is not a CAD software. True. Photoshop does however allow you to zoom in and out with the scroll wheel. It just needs a pan function...But thats Photoshop...
  21. quote: Originally posted by archoncad: Oh yes, make sure you get a scroll wheel so that you can zoom in and out with the mouse. Ahh...But you forgot to add in the fact that you have to hold down ANOTHER KEY ON THE KEYBOARD to do that. I can't think of any other program that still doesn't use the middle button for panning, and the scroll wheel (without extra keyboard pressing!) for zooming. Wishlist item....STILL!
  22. Ah, this is something I would like to know as well. We do quite a lot of refurb work (currently on ACAD) on old barns and listed buildings in the UK, and believe me, there isn't one straight wall in ANY of them. We usually end up with 3D solids for walls, but can't place a door or window object into them, because it's not a 'Wall' We looked at ArchiCAD but their 'polygon wall' doesn't allow door/window placement either? Is there a a way round this in VW 10.5/11? -JT
  23. Thanks Katie, I'll try them again tomorrow.
