  1. Dworks, Thanks. I wonder if you would be willing to post a new topic explaining how you keep them all straight? How do you have your classes organized? What sort of naming convention do you use? How do you remember to use a specific class instead of another with a similar name? I struggle with this sort of thing and would be happy to see some tips from someone who has clearly developed a workable system. Thanks for any help you can offer.
  2. Dworks, I'm curious, how many classes do you have in a typical drawing set?
  3. Use the Stack Layers command. Alternatively, create a new Design layer and click Create Layer Link command, then select the layers you want to see and they will all show up on the linked layer. You can also create a viewport on a sheet layer and have the layers you want to see show up there. This is a static view though. You can change the view with the settings, but you cannot move the model directly (with the flyover tool) like you can in the design layers. The viewport on sheet layer is better for printing.
  4. When I use the Create Report command, a dialog box opens. If I want to List All Objects with a record, I can select the object type from a dropdown list. This list seems to be in a completely random order. Is there a reason why it is not alphabetical? Is there a way to make it so? Is it in an order that I have not identified? It is very tedious trying scan a random list in order to find something.
  5. I think the above would be a good feature. Additionally, when you select multiple objects, the OIP currently tells you that you have 'x' objects selected and you can click the button with three dots which allows you to use the arrows to move through the selected items one at a time and see info about object in succession. I think it would be helpful to have a button there that allows you to deslect the others and make the object that you are viewing the "selected" object (similar to the force select command). As it is now, you can find the object you want pretty easily, but getting it selected by itself can sometimes (often) be a challenge.
  6. Try "Activate Layer" or "Force Select" from the contextual menu.
  7. I mentioned something similar in a previous post where I suggested that sheet layers in the Org/Nav. palettes should be rearrangable (by dragging) and dynamically numbered (in the palette) similar to the way the design layers are. It should also be possible to sort them alphabetically (in ascending or descending order) by clicking on the column header, as is now possible with the design layers.
  8. Oh, that sucks. I can't imagine why. Given that, I'm not sure what advantage the export feature might have over print to PDF. Perhaps none.
  9. Are you using the Export PDF (Batch) menu item (as opposed to just the Export PDF) ? On mine, the batch item lets me select the sheets I want to export. I've found it useful. If you use the Issue Manager, you can also select Today's Issue or a saved set.
  10. I've had that sort of thing occasionally. Try these things: Closing & reopening the file. Quitting & reopening the application. Shutting down & restarting the computer. Often one of the first two seem to help. (Don't ask me why.)
  11. To post your PDF click File Manager when you are creating your post, click Choose File to browse for the file you want to post, then click Add File to have it upload to the board. You will see the file name in the file manager window. By the way, it's not a good idea to create two threads with duplicate text. Makes it confusing.
  12. There is a preference in Document Preferences>Display that will show/not show wall components according to the scale of the drawing. See if that has an effect. Re your selection issues, you may have had your layers or classes set to Show Others which would let you see things but not select them.
  13. Try inserting a door with the door tool and setting it for Cased Opening. Then set the jamb thickness to 0 and leave the Show Trim boxes unchecked.
  14. Katie, I tried to use the Task Manager once too, but found that after a while, when I tried to run the Create Standard Viewports command, it wouldn't work. If you create or modify viewports without using the Create Standard Viewport command, does it break or confuse the Task Manager? If so, how do you duplicate or delete viewports without causing that problem? (it's also possible I did something else wrong. It was a while ago when I tried this and can't remember clearly the sequence of events) Thanks.
  15. Christiaan, Bill, & cbaarch, Thanks for the replies. Based on a random sample of three, it seems that there are a myriad of ways which are tied to the office standard in use. I guess I'm sort of creating my own office standard right now. What I'm thinking is it might be helpful if the sheet layers in the Org/Nav. palettes were able to be rearranged and dynamically numbered (in the palette) similar to the way the design layers are. There would be an option to sort them alphabetically by clicking on the column header, also similar to the design layers. The "Drawing Number" in the Edit Title Block window would then have a field that could have an option (activated by checkbox) of populating automatically using the number from the Org./Nav. palette. There would need to be a "Prefix" and "Suffix" field which could accept static data for those with more complicated systems. By unchecking the option checkbox, the main number field would accept information as it does now, or the prefix or suffix fields could be used by those who find the numbers inconvenient. Perhaps the numbering system in the Org/Nav palette would have the ability to number in various ways, to accomodate those using a "200.xx"system vs a single number system? Can't think how that would work at the moment. This could be the type of thing that might make things easier for many but frustrating for a few that are not accounted for if the implementation is not flexible enough. What do you think, is this worth wishlisting?
  16. Petri, No. You're wrong. I read every answer carefully and appreciate the time taken by the respondents to provide them. Thank you for yours. I did read your answer. It's helpful in certain circumstances. Specifically, when you already have an object on the drawing that you want to report on. What I am suggesting is something along the lines of the VectorScript Function Reference which allows the user to look at all the available options in order to select the one best suited to their task. Currently, (V12) if I wish to create an object and know that I will want to report on it later, I must do one of two things to see the parameters that are available. 1. I can open the Plug In Editor and review the objects parameters there. 2. I can place an object on the drawing and look at the object info palette, or create a report as you suggested. If I wish to compare the available parameters of more than one object to see which will best suit my needs, the info editor is of no use because I can only see one object's parameters at a time. (And cannot print the list from there) The same goes for the OIP. Using your suggestion, I could place a number of objects on the drawing and create a report on each one, and then print them if I wish. (But I don't think it will print the formulas, will it?) Then, for all the objects which I will not use, I must delete the object and then find and delete the worksheet that I created for that object. To me, that is doing things by trial and error. Why should I have to create and delete an object and a worksheet just to determine if the object will suit my needs? I realize that I have drifted from my original suggestion which was about the availability of "real" and "alternate" names, but they go hand in hand. Once I have selected and drawn an object, I now must determine the proper names to use in my formula so I must use one of the above methods again. As someone who is trying to get a handle on how this all works together, I'm saying it is not very user friendly and I'd like to see a built in menu item that will provide the names of the PIO's and their parameters that I can refer to WHILE I am investigating a tool.
  17. Pat, Yes, that's pretty much what I was asking for. Perhaps it's unnecessary, but I find that there are times that I don't actually know what parameter might do the job best in a formula. I'd like to be able to see the name of the PIO and it's parameter names in a list so it isn't necessary to look them up individually. I will say that I am pretty new to this process so perhaps I am overcomplicating things. Also, my apologies to Mr. Anderson. I searched for the post that I mentioned in an effort to get more information but was unsuccessful. My memory may be getting worse that it was before, but I can't really remember how it was before so I have no way to know.
  18. Speaking of which, why is there no easy way for users to see a list of these names and their alternates? I know we can use the Plug In Editor but this is neither user friendly nor convenient. I recall a post about this topic some time ago where Robert Anderson suggested to the questioner that they should write a script that will return all those names. While I'm sure this is a simple task in the VectorScript 101 guide, it shouldn't be required for a user who is simply trying to set up a worksheet and needs the "real" name of a parameter. It would have been much more helpful if Mr. Anderson had provided the script in his reply, but even more helpful would be to have it built into the program so those of us who have not yet learned Vectorscript but can manipulate a spreadsheet are not stymied. Perhaps something like "Show Parameter List" in the menu right below the Plug in Editor? I'd suggest that little stumbling blocks like this are a disincentive to people who might otherwise be perfectly capable of taking advantage of the power of worksheets.
  19. You can still use the roof object, but you have to uncheck "Create Gable End Walls" in the OIP and create actual wall objects on a design layer. Then select the wall and use the "Fit Walls to Roof" command.
  20. I'm wondering how people organize their sheet layers with regards to names/numbers and how they coordinate that with the drawing number in the title block and on section/detail markers? I have numbered my sheets using the OIP>Edit Title Block>Sheet>Drawing Number field. My sheet names in the Organization/Navigation palettes have a number prefix that corresponds to the drawing number so that my sheets show up in the Navigation palette in the same order that I want them to print. When keying sections or details, I enter the drawing number into the marker symbol. The problem is that when I find I need to add a sheet or rearrange a few sheets, it is a huge task to renumber all the sheets in the Navigation palette, and then renumber all the title blocks and markers. Is there an easier (automated) way to do this? Thanks.
  21. EVERY dialog box should include a Cancel button. In addition to the request made here: http://techboard.nemetschek.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=89233#Post89233 I have another... When changing the class of an object to one that has class attributes, a dialog box appears asking if the new object should use those attributes. The current options (in v.12) are "No Always", "No", "Yes", "Yes Always". There should be a cancel button here so that a user has the opportunity to go back and see what the class attributes are in order to make an informed decision. ( Or look the issue up in the manual if they are unfamiliar with the concepts as I was when I first saw this.) Also, it is unclear whether the "Always" options refer to "Always for this object", "Always for this class" or "Always for every similar instance that I ever encounter from this moment forward". If the latter, then do the "Always" options disappear and you never have the ability to make this choice again? I wouldn't know as I've always been afraid to click them. Further, if the object whose class you are changing is a group, then after answering the above dialog box, ANOTHER dialog box appears asking if you want "the class assignment to apply to all the subobjects of the group (as opposed to only applying to the group)?" The same four answer choices are presented. In this case, it is even more important to have a Cancel button so the user can investigate the group to see if it is appropriate to change the class of all the subobjects before making the decision.
  22. I agree with Patrick. EVERY dialog box should have a cancel button. EVERY ONE. This is not currently the case in VW and I find it annoying for the exact same reason as Patrick. It takes you down a dark alley that you turned into accidently and doesn't allow you to turn back. DWorks- But the issue is that there may not have been a change (as in his checking of the window position. Why does VW think there has been a change?) or you may have made a change that you now do not wish to implement. Having to wait for a rerender and then undo which causes another rerender is very time consuming. The Cancel button should eliminate the rerender and any "change" that initiated it.
  23. You can use the flyover tool in a viewport while in Edit Crop mode.
