  1. I wrote a lengthy reply which involved some testing and was interrupted by normal life (work). Having it finally ready, I said "Continue" and POOF! It could not be submitted but had vanished in the air. This is totally stupid. Can we please have better forum software or better settings!
  2. I have finally concluded that line styles with at least simple markers - letters, crosses, ticks etc - would definitely be useful. They could be applied to any objects and existing objects. Duplicate Along Path is of course the workaround, but it is clumsy and non-editable.
  3. OK - it may be that this Repetitive Unit does what my PIO does and is the "built-in feature". Obviously something new in VW 12. Well, if I ever upgrade, at least one PIO less to modify & install, so thanks Tom for explaining what Pete already had showed. I thought he was talking about Duplicate Along Line, which has been used for the purpose. Time to learn to read.
  4. Nevertheless, I prefer to use my own line & polygon objects that make the process totally painless (text, symbol or 2 alternating symbols) and allows adjustment of spacing. Should be a built-in feature instead of something one needs to implement through programming!
  5. As a general rule: never change program version of work in progress, but finish them with the old version and start new ones with the new version. With PIOs this is even more important than in "old fashioned" documents.
  6. Why do I think that a separate rendering program, perhaps with the mentioned facility, would be more appropriate for those people & situations where this could really make a difference?
  7. Thanks, Peter! This looks quite promising.
  8. You're welcome. To clarify: the statements about search criteria and formula are separate issues, although you can indeed use a field value as a database query, too. With the formula you can list field contents in a database report / worksheet. So, you can create the database report about all objects with 'Product data' or only those where the manufacturer is, say, Knoll. The query can be made quite complex even by using the "More Choices" button, but occasionally one needs to first do a query, then "Edit Criteria", say "Cancel" and edit the query command manually eg. to change an AND operator (&) to an OR operator (|) or vice versa.
  9. With a formula like this (in a database of a worksheet) ='Schematic pipe'.whatever_the_name_of_the_length_field_is (I have no idea what the example is like.)
  10. No that either, I'm afraid. You can, however, use records as search criteria. A formula such as ='Product data'.Manufacturer could be helpful.
  11. The easy answer to this is that you have a layer for each floor, at the correct z-level. You may also wish to have a separate layer for the site and the roof.
  12. Hear, hear! I'll fifth this request! I concede that in my MacPlus with EZ-Draft it was painfully slow for the selected object to be dashed, but most people's computers are a tad faster nowadays. Mind you, Mr. NNA: we want to define the look of the selection ourselves. Handles only, colour change (with the colour of our choice), marching ants etc.
  13. Thanks, Nick - so it seems to be! But, alas, it is not particularly well configured.
  14. The esteemed John Williams had a BBEdit plug-in that showed reserved words (etc) of VS in colour. He seems to have moved on so I guess he won't update his plug-in to work with TextWrangler. Has anyone else created a similar tool for TextWrangler?
  15. Andrew, I'm afraid that you are indeed reinventing the wheel. Viewports handle this extremely well. If, however, you need the projections for further design, you can of course write a script that creates new layers with the appropriate projection and layer links on them to display the source layer - but doing the same without a script is probably a good idea as you will anyway need to unlock and move the links to convenient locations. Neither approach handles a selection, though. I'd recommend using separate documents for the creation of complex objects, such as chairs, and importing them to other documents as symbols. Truth to be said, the lack of four active windows, with different projections - found in many other CAD programs - is a serious shortcoming in VW.
  16. In this professional message board one can also expect the official spokespersons of NNA to give accurate, truthful and honest replies, which may include somethng like "unfortunately, our software is not designed to handle large data sets", instead of accusing the users and/or belittling them. I have plenty of experience with VW's DTM not being able to model terrain data that are a breeze for competing programs (like $100 add-ons for AutoCAD), so there must be something fundamentally wrong in NNA's program.
  17. Excuse me, but this statement is totally untrue. Please explain how you can create a DTM of, say, Finland without at least hundreds of points of vertex points along hundreds of polygons "without losing any detail". Right - you mean that the DTM is only intended to model a single house site. located in a flat area... Well, that's different!
  18. Polygons & polylines: Perimeter = length. Line thickness has no effect. Walls: Length = length. These can be calculated into a worksheet.
  19. Right. Well, I won't offer more advice to Mr/Ms COMJAX as I don't want to have anything to do with gun-crazy people.
  20. I don't think this can be done. Besides, as one can have several attached records, the results could be rather unpredictable.
  21. One does not want the individually edited & entered data to disappear when one changes the default values, so let's be grateful that records are not updated!
  22. Where is Linux growing? Among hobbyists and very specialised industries. I have not heard of successful, commercial software on Linux. I would imagine that porting is quite a large task - well, at least the Windows-port was, as I understand. As I already said, to make money NNA would need to sell tens of thousands of licences to new users. (The current user base is, according to NNA, around 400,000.) In addition to porting itself, the Linux-version would need technical support - also by all distributors around the world. I gather that even Windows generates more tech support requests per user than the Mac platform. If a CAD-user is tired of Windows, he or she can switch to Mac. I don't see any benefits from a switch to Linux and can hardly imagine an architect or designer switching from Mac to Linux. Why would one do that?
  23. To quote Basil Fawlty: "What's the point? I mean, what's the bloody point?" I simply can't understand why there should be a Linux-version of VectorWorks. Are there tens of thousands of architects and other design professionals committed to the Linux-platform, refusing to use either Windows or MacOS?

Someone, a couple of years ago, posted a Terminal command that changed the pens of MacOS to round ones. Unfortunately, I can't find it!
  25. You should perhaps consider a separate database system, eg. FileMaker Pro, to hold all the relevant data, including pictures. You get excellent, practically desktop-publishing quality, data sheets. The worksheet data can, with copy and paste, used to select the records in the 'master file'. (Applies to FMP, don't know about others.) The approach also helps in maintaining costing data (not to mention other data.)
