  1. Thanks for the tips! I was pretty sure the problems were all on my side... I understand the points on simplifying polys. They are typical for source contours we receive during the start of a project, or generated in Civil from a surface. I'm the only one in the office working with VW at the moment, so my workflow involves bringing drawings over from AutoCAD/Civil into VW for 3d modelling, BIM, etc. I am in the process of figuring out the simplest way of doing this, which of course would be largely solved if starting work in VW directly.
  2. Hi Everyone, I'm having a problem where creating a site model from source contours is changing those contours for reasons I cannot understand. (source file attached) As you can see below, I have worked out all the contours so there where the details should be OK (early stages here). However, one corner for example is giving me problems for unknown reasons.... You can see below that the contours are drawn cleanly where there is a sharp rise (wall basically) Yet when the surface is generate from these contours, it does some very funny things that totally change these contours. I have tried several options like adding in some extra 3d geometry, grade modifiers afterwards on the proposed site, which gets closer, but there is quite a number of large artifacts that aren't always explained (some are usually my error) Am I missing something here? I could in Theory try using all of these contours again as site modifiers, but that seems a bit odd.... Example.vwx
  3. You can get around this by having a 'project zero' that is agreed upon. As landscape architects, we always work in World Coordinates, so here is a workflow for allowing smooth file sharing: 1. Set up your drawings in the correct WCS. 2. Set your user origin to match the coordinate system. 3. Set your internal origin to the agreed or desired '0,0' for the project (somewhere nearby of course) by using the Geolocate tool. 4. You can then change your user origin (a.k.a. 0,0) to match the internal origin. From this point, if you want to import files from engineers/landscape architects, you can change your user origin back to match that of the coordinate system. The same goes for exporting your files to engineers and related disciplines. If you want your imports/exports to be relative to your 'project zero' then you switch your user origin back to match the internal origin.
  4. You can control the colours of plant objects by editing the 3d components of the group and placing them on desired classes with colour assignment.
  5. Yes, I have seperately tagged the content of the group to two specific classes, and tried having the object itself on the 'none' class, but then the entire object is just grey. Seeing as the landscape areas export several colours, it should be possible. The Data tab in the OIP along with the data manager and object settings allow quite a lot of info to come through the IFC export. In Norway they also have a layer-naming standard so that the classes themselves give a basic ID for the components info/type.
  6. Hi Everyone, I am just wondering if someone has figured out how to export trees with separate colours for the trunk/foliage. I am able to give the different components of the 3d symbol colours by class settings, but these don't seem to carry through to the IFC. If I have the trees on 'none' class, then they are grey, and if I place them on a class, the settings inside the 3d symbol dont seem to export. It seems like this is possible since the landscape areas export with several colours, but maybe I am missing something here? VW IFC Thanks in advance.
  7. Agree here. I am hoping something is in the works for this, as it is indeed a bit of a cumbersome and glitchy process at the moment.
  8. Yes, I have also been experiencing this issue...with some similar issues, though I was sometimes able to select other fence symbols and have them align properly....but sometimes not. Even from restart, if I select a particular symbol before I start drawing it seems to not draw at the correct z height.
  9. Hi Everyone, I have looked through other forum posts, but cannot seem to figure out why a symbol/plug-in object I have created will not rotate normally (in 2d top plan, or 3d). I made the resource from a 3d modell (.obj) as you can see below. When I try to rotate it, some part of the object seems to rotate, but not the entire symbol as is desired. As you can see above, the symbol hasn't actually rotated. Any pointers here?
  10. Hi Scott, Thanks for the pointer! It does seem that I did not have enough stake points along the curved section and this was causing the conflict as you pointed out since the landscape area went beyond the heights extrapolated between stake object I used to make the model. I have been trying to figure out a good way to create the site model along curved geometries, but it doesn't seem like you can include contours & grade-network objects as site model data, or that it works very well to use nurbs since there are also so many vertices. I didn't realise that you can set source data for the site model outside the boundary. Does this seem like a good method for avoiding this type of problem along curved edges of site models?
  11. Why don't you just use landscape areas? From what I understand, the hardscape tool is basically a fancy slab tool, which will not align perfectly to the site model since it is a slab. You would have to use grade-network site modifiers at best to come close to what you want. Landscape areas, which offer the same functionality follow the site model precisely.
  12. What type of hardscape have you created? (aligned?slab?) Have you checked your settings in the hardscape object that it is aligning to the same layer the site model is on? A hardscape object should automatically go to the surface if it falls within the site boundary, and if it goes outside of this boundary even a little it will not align.
  13. Hi Everyone, I am having a strange issue where a landscape area is not snapping to the surface despite being within the site boundary and having all the correct settings (identical to all surrounding landscape areas which work just fine....) I have tried offsetting the geometry for the landscape area 1-2cm from the site boundary since this sometimes causes problems, but unless I offset about 10cm it doesnt snap up to the surface. Despite the offset, I get these site modifier conflict messages: There is probably something simple I am missing here....but I cant think why all of the other landscape areas work fine with the same settings, but not this particular piece. Any tips would be greatly appreciated! I've attached a file so you can see for yourselves 😉 Test 3.vwx
  14. *EDIT* I figured out that difficulties in exporting multiple site models in one IFC project is due to problems with the 'Site' IFC data tag, which only allows one object as the 'site'. If you classify your sites with another IFC data-tag, you can export as many as site models within one file as you wish. Alternatively, you can ungroup your site modals and export meshes into an IFC file together, but this is really unnecessary if you relabel the IFC data.
  15. Hello everyone, I am wondering if it is possible to export multiple site models within the same drawing into a single IFC file. As you can see below, I have modelled a project in several areas each as their own model. The best result I have had so far is just getting one site alone with the constructed elements. Perhaps there is another solution or workflow? (will be trying from mesh surfaces next) Much thanks for any tips, and the file is attached. Test2.vwx

    Site Model Issue

THANK YOU! I won't get the last 2 hours of my life back, but this will prevent me throwing my computer out the window. One of the joys of translating AutoCAD DWG's into VW I guess. Tried to be careful with the snapping, but obviously missed that.
  17. Hi everyone, I am just making a simple site model and am experiencing a problems where the site model is cutting out a section for no apparent reason. I have tried adding extra point heights, 3d geometry but to no avail. There are not any site modifiers, or any other objects/layers to influence the site model. You can see the polygon and point heights I am using to make the site model below. Next you see the problem where the site model created from this data clips out a section for no apparent reason....and I cant seem to get it sorted. I have uploaded a copy of the file for testing....and maybe I am missing something obvious here? Help me Obi-Wan..... Test.vwx
  18. Thanks @Eric Gilbey, PLA & @jpccrodrigues . Forgot to write back that setting grade limits helped solve the problem. I ended up putting it around most of the site....which worked pretty well. I don't know if there are any downsides to that approach? Cheers
  19. I have also been trying to get better resolution images - since the geoimage tool seems to offer connection to various arcGIS services. It works fine for very large area plans, but does not really function well enough for projects outside of the planning phases when you zoom in even to relatively large projects. I have not had success getting better quality imagery services (clarity/firefly) that are open/accessible, but perhaps @Tamsin Slatter has some pointers on this topic, since there is a useful webinar on the subject. Hoping that higher resolutions might be usable in the near future.
  20. Hi everyone, Experiencing 2 problems when I am simply changing the 'name' element of some landscape area styles I have saved. You can see the model as it appears below, before trying to change things. Problem 1: Although I only have 2-3 objects created in each style, and it is a simple file, just changing the naming convention for the style causes my computer to hang for several minutes. Problem 2: After changing the naming option in the styles, the landscape areas behave differently (see bottom picture), and change their alignment. I have changed nothing else. This is not a HUGE problem, because if I delete these landscape areas, and recreate them from the original geometry, they align just perfectly. So this is more a weird issue that might warrant some checking into.
  21. Hi everyone, I am having a problem where the proposed site model contours are behaving badly inside a hole within a hardscape. You can see the existing contours below, and the shape of the paved area which will take an elevation of 44m. When I create the hardscape (slab modifier), the contours continue to pop up in the cutout area...which means you have geometry spiking up 1-2m from the hardscape I would obviously prefer if this did not happen, since I cant seem to change this even if I put another slab inside that area. Is the only alternative to modify the existing contours so that they do not pass through that hole? Even when I adjust existing contours out of the way, the terrain comes up above the landscape area I have placed within the hardscape... Much thanks.... Test.vwx
  22. WOW. A huge thanks for multiple approaches to this @jeff prince @Benson Shaw @Tom W. ! I will try them out!

    Geoimage error

I also have this problem when I am trying to use some of ESRI's available maps from its living atlas (firefly/clarity imagery services) which I know are some of the better quality functional imagery services. It seems like we should be able to get access to decent quality aerial imagery without problems. However, I cannot get these to work at all in VW. no matter how low in resolution (50, 150, 500,etc) , how large i zoom out, or small I zoom in. Seems like there is some kind of bug here, as this functionality appears to be set up, but not functional. Maybe @Tamsin Slatter has a better idea about these issues?
  24. Yes, I just thought there was a way to subtract from that surface as you can in programs like Rhino. The two half method will be a way to do it....but it does seem simple to make the dtm with a pad. I was hoping to avoid a mess underneath the surface, in the case it was ever exported for IFC or something down the line.
