  1. Is there a way to create a text block from an objects' Name field in the Data tab in the OIP? I am creating simple 2d geometry over PDF versions of plans to do material take off/extimating calculations. I am naming each 2D object in the Data tab so they can be differentiated in a worksheet, but it would be useful to attach the name to the object on the layer as well. It would be great to be able to have the label created in a class so visibility could be controlled.

  2. Hello visard,

I took that same class with Marc. Great class.

If I remember correctly the information that you need is pretty basic. I did mine w/ vectorworks as well. I don't know if I made any worksheets to pull out the data or not, but I will check. If you search this board there is a lot of examples of people who have shared worksheets to do material take off of one kind or another. I would see if that turns up anything you could modify to your needs. I have often thought it would be great to set up VW to give me all the data for material take off and energy models, but I haven't been doing much design lately. There was a REScheck worksheet that someone created that used a combination of worksheets, records and classes to pull out the data need for rescheck, that might be a good place to start.

  3. I've never run VW with a monitor that large (27"), but I run it with a 2x monitor set up and I like it a lot. I have one monitor with the main project window, tool bars and nav palette, and the other has the oip, resource browser, etc. with room left open for other documents that i need to look at. I like the set up of the 2x.

  4. Not sure if this will help, but I recently moved my computer and somehow some of the RAM got loose and wasn't being accessed by the computer (system was running 4GB instead of the normal 6GB) anyway, VW2012 crashed a few times, and I got a few error messages before I realized what was wrong. Now that I am back up with 6GB RAM, VW 2012 is very stable, again.

So, could be a lack of RAM

  5. I use a normal wall in the proposed wall class for windows that get blocked. (Window goes to a demo class, fill wall is in proposed wall class) For new windows in existing walls, I need to use a wall in a special class that has the same graphical attributes as the existing walls so that existing plans will show correctly. Otherwise, they show the cut out for the proposed window in the existing plans, but no window.

  6. Why not layers or wall styles? Right now my methodolgy for dealing with renovation is to have the existing, demo and proposed all on the same layer (different layers for different floors, slab layers and roof) and control what is shown using classes. I already have a class for demo-wall and exst-wall that controls the graphic display of the wall, without having to move the walls to a new layer or having to change it's wall style.

So, during design of an existing structure, I can easily move walls between exst-wall class (walls that will remain) and demo-wall class(walls that will be removed) and have the graphical display of the walls change. Its is helpful to see where the demo-walls are in plan view, for existing load paths, etc, but I usually don't want the walls to have height in a 3d view.

I would rather not have separate layers for for demo or more wall styles to manage.

  7. Is it possible to control wall height by class?

I would like to be able to move walls into a class (Demo-Wall) and have the height of the walls changed to z=0 height. Idealy, moving walls out of that class would return walls to a default height, i.e. layer height.

  8. Find the object you want in Google's 3dWarehouse on the web. Download the object. It will be in Sketch Up format (.skp)Open VW with a new, blank file and from the File menu select Import>Import Sketch Up. Navigate to the sketchp file you downloaded, and it should import into VW. There are some options to importing, but I usually leave them as at the default settings. I think it depends what you are importing.

You can then manipulate the object in VW, and use it your VW project.
