    equal parts

A pretty flexible way to divide just about anything is to offset a line a bunch of times (determined by the number of divisions desired +1) and then group them. This group can be stretched to the object to be divided and the intermediate segments are snappable reference points. [ 12-15-2004, 05:04 PM: Message edited by: EvB ]
  2. Great topic! I'm posting late in the thread because ironically I haven't had time to browse due to shearwall insanity messing with my corridor widths, bathtub ROs, stair shaft widths, and minimum room dimensions. I often draw a polygon of my essential dimensions and group it to the pertinent walls to controll the rethicknessing process a bit. This line of thinking led me to investigate whether the create walls from polygon tool constantly references the polygon, -like if I resized the polygon would the walls change with it? They didn't. Add another checkbox next to 'Delete Source Poly' 'Constrain Walls to Poly' This is just a start, but it's compatable with the VW tool philosophy.

    Viewport

First of all, lets make sure that our terminology is up to date. OLD: Sheet = Set using buttons in lower left of VW window. NEW: Sheet = Created in the Layer dialog window, (two tabs at top: Design & Sheet) ******** An example: I have a floorplan with a complex window bay. I want to have a blown up view detailing this on the same printed page as the overall plan. The Design Layer that the plan is drawn on is called Plan1. * In the Layer dialog window, I create a Sheet Layer named Plan1.Bay. * In the Design Layer- Plan1, I create a Viewport of the entire plan, named Plan and specify Sheet Plan1.Bay. * In the Design Layer, Plan1 I create a Viewport of the bay, named Bay and specify Sheet Plan1.Bay. * Within the Sheet Layer Plan1.Bay I can now move, crop, and/or annotate these viewports, (also note the viewport options in the O.I. pallette). * A Saved View, (formerly Sheet), at this point named A1-Plan1.Bay can filter classes and hold the page location for printing, Sheet Layers can also be directly printed using Batch Print. * This is a basic strategy that does not begin to approach the capabilities. I especially like the annotation feature as it frees up the design layers from text and dimension clutter. I also appreciate how within a Sheet Layer objects can be grouped with a viewport for easier formatting; like notes and arrows pointing to parts of a rendered Viewport. 4. Yes! An additional suggestion would be to enter the design layer from the point of view of the viewport, not off in the relative design layer space if the viewport has been moved substantially. The viewport is referencing this location in the design layer, and presumably one would like to edit the information shown in that viewport. The annotation feature is great! Now my drawings aren't cluttered up with dimensions and notes.
  5. I would like to be able to merge two documents into one, including sheet layers, viewports and saved views by importing a VW11 file into another VW11 file. This cannot be accomplished with workgroup referencing, or copyclip-paste strategies. Also, export to DWG and import to VW is an imperfect, and in my opinion, needless quasi-workaround. It's apples and apples.

    Simple Question

I have had no problems with copyclip-paste. I just don't want to have to create duplicate sheet layers, viewports, and views that have already been set up in a separate file. This in fact is what I must do though. I guess I should have started a new topic....

    Simple Question

Version 11 User's guide p.3-37 6. Click design layers to import. Sheet Layers cannot be workgroup referenced. ********** Since I am unfamiliar with workgroup referencing I decided to read up on it while I tried to export the smaller file as a .dwg and import it into the main file. It took a long time, and I lost viewports and design layers that were not saved into views. Also a Design Layer is missing. My main reason for wanting to do this is so that all the pages for this set of CD's can be printed from one file rather than two. It's not really essential that the info be shared, I just thought that this would be a simple operation for VectorWorks. ************* You can put me down for a wish list item: Add VectorWorks as an import format option, where all layers, views, classes, viewports, lineweights, resources, etc., are retained.

    Simple Question

What is the best way to merge two drawing files together in VW 11 having already set up Design Layers, Sheets with Viewports and Saved Views. I am very impressed by how .dwg files are imported with viewports and scaling, etc. Can I do the same thing by importing a VectorWorks file?

    Image Files Malfunction

I've found that this graying happens when zooming in exceeds the image resolution or something like that. It really sucks if you're trying to trace an image and be precise. [ 07-14-2004, 01:25 PM: Message edited by: EvB ]

    Planning 3D enhancements

I think the subtract solids option Tim Firkowski is requesting is one which I have wished for as well. To explain: Problem- I have a stack of objects and I want to subtract a hole straight through all of them while retaining the individual editability of each object. Presently I must create a duplicate 'hole' object for each object subtracted from. If the stacked objects are added, the operation can be done with one 'hole' object, but the stacked objects lack individuality. Solution- Provide a radio button in the Subtract Solids dialog box that allows the highlighted object to be subtracted from all others, ie. the 'hole' object would be duplicated and grouped automatically for all subtracted objects. Problem'- This brings up the issue of editing the hole profile. Are all instances linked to one editable solid, or are they individually editable. Solution'- Editing the hole profile should elicit a dialog box that prompts one to choose between; 'all instances' and 'this instance.' [ 07-07-2004, 04:09 PM: Message edited by: EvB ]

When the space bar is released, the previously used tool will be the active tool. It works with key commands as well as palette clicks.
  13. I agree. Is this some buggy artifact of snap radius?

    scroll like Aoutcad

Jacques- On a MAC: -System Preferences (Blue Apple) -Other, Logitech Control Center (At bottom) -Configure -etc. Personally, as an ex-AutoCAD user, initially I wished for the same scrollwheel functions as AutoCAD, but have become quite used to the z, x, c, v, option(alt), and space keystrokes to navigate, (Architect Workspace). In the end, learning and using the VectorWorks interface rather than emulating another program is the only way. But if the Zoom/Pan scrollwheel functionality of AutoCAD were implemented in VectorWorks, I would bee pleased.

    scroll like Aoutcad

If you don't mind losing the "Right Click" functions: For a Logitech Scroll Mouse- -set Wheel Button to Keystroke "Space" -Set Right Button to Advanced Click "option(alt)" To Zoom: -hold down Right Button and use Scroll Wheel.* To Pan: -Hold down Wheel Button and Right Click to "grab," during this type of panning the Wheel can also be spun to Zoom in and out!** *It does not work if a command is active since Right Click is now a "Click", ergo- xx to clear. **Release right button first or no pan. It's cool....but cooler than Right Click? If only I had a five button mouse....
  16. I wish the break line allowed an object to be trimmed to it. I dare say this is a bug.

    'Exit Group' keystroke?

Sorry to bother you with simple questions. I found that a combination of 'Top Level' and 'Previous View' accomplish what I am trying to do. Thanks.
  18. Is there a keystroke shortcut for Exit Group? It is common to have groups within groups and exiting would be easier with a keystroke. Also... Is there a way to toggle from deep within a group back to the main layer without exiting through multiple groups and re-entering them? This would be helpful for bringing construction/reference lines into the group. [ 02-13-2004, 10:36 AM: Message edited by: EvB ]

    'Exit Group' keystroke?

And I thought I had to push the button in the upper right of the window...duh! My second question is about a "Top Level Toggle ." Is there any such thing?

    Tabless data entry

Making the length field the first position in the tab structure seems intuitve, and I'm surprised this is not the case. Click-drag drawing does not really work so well with the necessary tabbing.

    "non scaling symbols"

This is a simple way to accomplish what I think you are trying to do. You will need to have a visible layer specifically scaled to this symbol. We do this with our drawing title. It remains the same size regardless of the active layer scale. You might need to have one of these secondary symbol layers for each of your primary layers if these symbols need to appear on different layers, -(ultimately sheets) in different positions. In this case, display of these associated layers would be choreographed using sheet settings. I hope this helps.
  22. quote: oh and maybe have a grey and snapable "show other objects while editing a group" now that would rock. quote: Amen..Amen...Amen!
  23. What is the use of setting a layer to gray and not being able to snap to it when the 'Show/Snap Others' layer option is picked? My wish: Be able to snap to a grayed layer.
