  10. With fellow General Device Type Format (GDTF) founders MA Lighting and Robe lighting, global design and BIM software provider Vectorworks, Inc. touts that DIN SPEC 15800 officially recognizes the GDTF as an open standard for the entertainment industry worldwide. “With this latest accomplishment of DIN SPEC 15800, GDTF will continue its growth and see even greater success now that it is recognized as a standard way of communicating controllable characteristics of lighting fixtures,” said Vectorworks CEO Dr. Biplab Sarkar. “GDTF has covered a lot of ground in the two short years since inception. We already have 35 manufacturers signed on to support the open standard and are grateful for their contributions to help build a solid basis for a standardized format that will advance the industry in new ways. I look forward to seeing more manufacturers, as well as more entertainment professionals contributing to the wide-spread availability of GDTF files and benefiting from it in their workflows.” DIN, the German Institute for Standardization, is the independent platform for standardization in Germany and worldwide. A DIN SPEC, is a document that specifies requirements for products, services and/or processes, and it’s a trusted strategic instrument for quickly and easily establishing and disseminating innovative solutions on the market. DIN's job is to ensure that a DIN SPEC does not conflict with any existing standards or rules of procedure. Now, GDTF will be a standard for describing the hierarchical and logical structure and controls of any type of controllable device in the lighting and entertainment industry. GDTF will be used as a foundation for the exchange of device data between lighting consoles, as well as CAD and 3D pre-visualization applications. The purpose of an existing GDTF file is to reflect the real-world physical components of the devices and to provide control based on this information. A GDTF file contains and is derived from the device’s real-world geometry, attributes and abilities. “At Robe we are thrilled by all the new development around GDTF because there are now great possibilities for providing detailed specifications of our moving head fixtures in a format not specific to a particular console manufacturer, but defined by a standard format – the new DIN SPEC 15800,” said Josef Valchar, CEO of Robe lighting. “This format covers DMX desk related use-cases and also includes data for visualization purposes, dedicated portions for media servers and for event-planning workflows. With DIN SPEC 15800 and the GDTF Builder to create the files online, there is absolutely no reason to remain locked to old, manufacturer-specific proprietary formats but rather use open standard fixture definition files.” “The recognition by DIN that GDTF offers value to manufacturers and practitioners in the live production and events industry is a monumental moment in the maturity of the GDTF file format,” said Gerhard Krude, managing director of MA Lighting Technology. “This signifies that the industry is ready to embrace the benefits of using it to standardize the definitions of real-world controllable objects, which is just the start for GDTF. Looking ahead, future revisions to the DIN SPEC 15800 will extend the GDTF to all parts of the industry including media servers, rigging systems, laser systems and much more.” “DIN SPEC 15800 is a good example of what DIN wants to achieve with DIN SPECs: support those who improve the status-quo with an innovative idea,” said Michael Bahr, project manager at DIN. “GDTF can be one of those ideas for the entertainment industry. I'm happy that we could support this project and develop a standard with the GDTF group. In a short period of time, we were able to develop the document which will build trust in the GDTF format. DIN SPEC 15800 will make the GDTF format available and usable to everyone. That's what DIN SPEC is made for: ‘Today’s idea. Tomorrow’s standard.’” To learn more, visit gdtf-share.com or watch the on-demand webinar, “Integrating GDTF & MVR into your Workflows.”

  17. Gilbey will help carry out association’s mission to advance profession of landscape design Columbia, MD (January 9, 2020)—The Association of Professional Landscape Designers names Eric Gilbey, PLA Qualified Professional Member of APLD, as its president, succeeding Danilo Maffei, FAPLD, PCH. The association serves to advance the promotion of landscape design and promote its members as qualified and dedicated professionals. Gilbey takes on this role with the primary responsibility of building brand awareness of APLD and its mission, while professionally developing and growing the association’s membership. “I am eager to engage with our APLD members and community, and I look forward to helping advance public awareness of the landscape design practice, including sustainable site design and better landscape performance,” said Gilbey. “In the last decade, there has been a shrinkage of professionals in not only landscape design, but also landscape architects and contractors. My hope is to increase outreach to the next generation of designers to encourage them to pursue a landscape career and find ways to improve landscapes through design and performance. This brings us to see APLD as a community of mentorship and outreach.” As the product marketing manager for the landscape industries at Vectorworks, Inc. — a global design and BIM software provider — Gilbey was elected after serving as president-elect for the past two years. He received an associate of applied science degree in landscape contracting and construction and a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture from the Ohio State University. In 1999 and 2013, Gilbey became licensed as a landscape architect in Ohio and Maryland, respectively. After joining APLD in 2008, he served on the DC-MD-VA APLD Chapter board and was later elected to serve on the APLD Board of Directors. Here are sentiments from past APLD presidents: “As the Immediate Past President of APLD, I’ve had the pleasure of serving as president for the past two years with Eric as the president-elect,” said Maffei, APLD president from 2018 – 2019 and principal at Maffei Landscape Design. “From the moment I began my leadership journey on APLD's Executive Committee, I knew Eric was the obvious choice to succeed me. He’s very genuine in his relationships, generous with his time and steadfast in his commitment to service in the landscape industry. Those are qualities that any organization seeks in a member and leader, and we are fortunate to have him as our next president.” “I have worked with Eric through APLD for almost 10 years now, and close to six years with him on the national APLD board,” said Lisa Port FAPLD APLD president from 2016 – 2017. “He has always made it a personal endeavor to connect with different groups, seeking understanding and promoting commonality when it comes to legislative issues, raising the bar within the profession and advocating for higher standards among members. He is an asset to the profession, the Vectorworks community and APLD.” Read Gilbey’s message to APLD members in the January issue of Design Online. Press, landscape designers, landscape architects and other design professionals can connect with Gilbey at egilbey@vectorworks.net or at events like the Northern Green tradeshow in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the National Collegiate Landscape Competition and the 2020 Vectorworks Design Summit where he will be speaking and conducting workshops.

Additionally, Vectorworks Architect 2020 was a runner-up in the Architectural Design Product of the Year category. The fourteenth annual Construction Computing Awards, also known as “The Hammers,” took place on November 14 at The Grand Connaught Rooms in Covent Garden. Over 220 guests gathered to see the outcome of the readers’ online voting and judging panel’s deliberations. “Having attended the awards for a number of years, Vectorworks UK was delighted to receive the coveted Editor’s Choice Award,” said Adrian Slatter, Vectorworks UK director of sales. “David was very gracious in his introduction of the award, explaining how the growth of Vectorworks and its transformation in the UK was very impressive. That coupled with the innovations in Vectorworks 2020, particularly the incorporation of enhanced GIS integration, made the decision for him. We are so pleased to see the efforts of our company recognized.” With over 25 categories, the awards are structured to showcase and reward the technology, tools and solutions for the effective design, construction, maintenance and modification of commercial buildings, residential and social housing and civil engineering projects of all sizes. “Moving from one design solution to another is a major step for any company in difficult times with Brexit, environmental concerns and other issues to deal with; Vectorworks is to credit for having the capability to move from one design solution to another,” said Chadwick. “The recent steps they have taken, such as becoming more directly involved in the UK market to support their users, releasing enhanced versions of their software which major heavily in information management and now adding GIS integration to its comprehensive range of design solutions, has resulted in a significant increase in their market share. There were a dozen contestants in individual applications, hardware and other recent additions to the market, but Vectorworks was an obvious choice this year.” Winners will appear in the November/December '19 issue of CAD User and Construction Computing magazine. 20. GIS helps designers make better decisions. This is why Vectorworks, Inc., a global design and BIM software provider and its partner Esri, the global leader in location intelligence, are bringing Esri’s ArcGIS Online services to AEC and landscape professionals, as well as urban planners and urban designers. The solution offers better and quicker access to GIS imagery, data and geometry and the latest technology available in Vectorworks 2020 software, including Vectorworks Architect, Landmark and Designer. “The process of integrating GIS information with a BIM model became tremendously easier with the ability to incorporate data from Esri ArcGIS Online services early in the design process. Further, the resulting georeferenced files make it easy to collaborate,” said Vectorworks Landscape Product Marketing Manager Eric Gilbey, PLA, ASLA. “A broad range of AEC and landscape professionals will benefit from the new integration including those planning with architecture firms or delivering government, master planning or campus planning projects. They’ll notice a much more seamless and direct GIS workflow that is a huge time saver.” With this new solution, designers can utilize access to online mapping and aerial images. This access comes by way of two new Vectorworks tools named Geoimage and Geolocate. With proper geographic coordinates and projection in the Vectorworks file, designers can accurately geolocate their project by simply entering an address. And with a paid ArcGIS Online services plan, customers can access more maps and other imagery directly in Vectorworks. “I love how Vectorworks often takes a user request to the next level, digging deep into the nature of the request and planning far ahead to meet user needs into the future,” said Anna Arbetter, licensed landscape architect at Futurity, Inc. “As an Esri user, the similarity to the ArcGIS environment makes Vectorworks even more of an asset for us. We use GIS extensively and incorporate it into every project. The streaming imagery service allows us to instantly assess whether our project data has shown up in the right location. The new method for setting the project location at 0,0 means we can use a standardized template that includes sheet viewports without the need to adjust viewports to each particular project location.” Learn more about the new solutions from Vectorworks by visiting the Vectorworks 2020 website.
