Global design and BIM software provider Vectorworks, Inc. releases Vectorworks 2023, featuring performance improvements and tools developed to give users more time to design. The 2023 release includes Vectorworks Architect, Landmark, Spotlight, Fundamentals, Braceworks, ConnectCAD and Vision with the English-language editions of these versions available today.

“We understand the importance and value of time and we’re excited to give some of this critical resource back to designers with Vectorworks 2023,” said Vectorworks Chief Technology Officer Steve Johnson. “In our continued effort to empower our users to design without limits, our latest release boasts upgrades to essential tools that will lessen the need for manual work. With the freedom to model anything with fewer steps, more automated operations and more ways to collaborate with others, users will be able to supercharge their workflows and maximize their productivity.”

The Vectorworks 2023 product line features improvements focused on accelerated BIM workflows, interoperability, user experience enhancements, BIM for the landscape and entertainment-focused quality improvements.

    BIM

Data is vital when it comes to BIM, and Vectorworks 2023 makes it more accessible and easier to manage, allowing designers to use data to their advantage for more efficient and precise modeling and documentation. Powerful data reporting additions will simplify the process of creating detailed reports and quantity takeoffs for building objects, allowing for highly accurate reports for walls, slabs, roofs and railing/fence objects and their defining components. The Data Manager’s capabilities have expanded, making it more predictable and easier to use when creating and managing all data types. Users can now search, filter and select multiple data sets, copy and paste information and apply it to other data sets. Vectorworks 2023 also offers more control of creating and customizing data tags. Users can intuitively find and change data tag object associations, display varying units per instance as needed and define a scale for use in sheet or design layers.

“Data is a crucial element of BIM or any type of information modeling,” said Rubina Siddiqui, product marketing director at Vectorworks. “Making it more accessible and easier to manage means that designers can take advantage of and use data in a way that does not take their time and focus away from designing.”

    Interoperability

Vectorworks continues to prioritize collaboration, constantly providing new and effective ways for users to work with fellow designers and consultants. Improvements to IFC import capabilities are just one of many ways Vectorworks 2023 encourages more productive collaboration. Users will experience increased performance when importing an IFC file and the ability to import from more applications. New options to filter objects upon import along with criteria-based class and story mapping for alignment with Vectorworks file organization offer greater control.

Vectorworks 2023 also issues a collection of user-friendly import/export improvements for essential exchanges of DWG and DXF files. Users can now customize which items and layers are exported in a file through a new, simplified export dialog. At the same time, when importing, it’s easy to select which layers and objects to include.

    User Experience

With everyday performance improvements focused on process automation and efficiencies, Vectorworks 2023 does the heavy lifting for you. Users can now streamline documentation workflows with improvements to Section Viewports. Taking advantage of the Vectorworks Graphics Module, these have the new ability to move calculations and processing to the background, allowing for viewport updates up to six times faster while also providing the ability to work on other tasks simultaneously.

Improvements to Cloud Presentations offer more freedom to active subscription and Service Select users to create and customize boards and virtual tours in Vectorworks Cloud Services. Virtual tours have added compatibility with various file types such as 3D models, PDFs, images and more in addition to updates to Vectorworks’ cloud and mobile 3D viewer, providing more robust options to share designs and impress clients.

With this latest release, designers will also experience Redshift without limits. Vectorworks 2023 now takes full advantage of Maxon’s Redshift Everywhere initiative, placing Redshift render styles within reach of all customers, regardless of the type of hardware being used, providing even more rendering options for outstanding visualizations.

    BIM For Landscape

With improved visual and organizational capabilities and new tools to save time on grading plans and terrain modeling, Vectorworks continues to pave the way to make adopting BIM into landscape workflows simpler. Users can now also take advantage of Vectorworks’ GIS and georeferencing integrations making file collaboration more straightforward by automatically placing referenced files using GIS settings from a master document. Plus, new GIS Settings and Coordinates allow you to note your preferred method of coordinate entry to incorporate georeferencing data more accurately. Additionally, with Vectorworks Landmark 2023, designers can easily specify and model hedgerows, mixed or single species, with the Hedgerow Tool. Seamlessly apply hedges to the site model surface in both 2D and 3D views, quantify by linear unit and simultaneously illustrate them at mature spread and height.

    Entertainment

With a focus on continuous improvement to provide entertainment and lighting designers tools they can trust, version 2023 includes critical upgrades to allow for more efficient and successful workflows. Rigging design and planning is easier than ever in Vectorworks Spotlight 2023. Improved integration between hoist and bridle objects allows for more consistent and manageable documentation, and two-leg bridle behaviors have been updated for consistency. Also, increased control over the now symbol-based truss cross object will ease a significant portion of designers’ workflows.

Spotlight users will also get peace of mind with improvements and enhancements in the latest version. Updates to the Shaded Render Mode eliminate the eight-light limit users previously faced, offering more rendering support for textures, gobos and haze. These features allow users to quickly create and share design concepts and ensure higher quality renderings. Common workflow issues with lighting devices and worksheet functions have also been addressed to deliver simplified drawing capabilities and more precise designs, leaving users more time to focus on the creative process.

The release of localized language versions will begin in October and conclude in the first quarter of 2023. For more information about the availability of Vectorworks 2023 in other markets, contact your local Vectorworks distributor. Vectorworks Service Select and subscription users can upgrade to Vectorworks 2023 as soon as the product is released in their local markets.

  8. Evolution of the GDTF File Format Demonstrates Industry-Wide Involvement, Extensibility and Scalability.

Columbia, MD (November 17, 2021)—With fellow General Device Type Format (GDTF) founders MA Lighting and Robe Lighting, global design and BIM software provider Vectorworks, Inc. reveals several valuable updates to GDTF—the standard for describing the hierarchical and logical structure and controls of any type of controllable device in the lighting and entertainment industry. The GDTF file format has continued to evolve with input and involvement from manufacturers across the globe and critical feedback from its many adopters, resulting in a newly published update to DIN SPEC 15800:2021.

“Receiving recognition in the form of a published update to DIN SPEC 15800:2021 is a testament to the continued evolution and success of GDTF,” said Vectorworks CEO Dr. Biplab Sarkar. “The necessary work will continue to take place to ensure GDTF’s bright future so that its benefits can not only advance the work of the designers utilizing it, but the entertainment industry as a whole.”

DIN, the German Institute for Standardization, is the independent platform for standardization in Germany and worldwide. A DIN SPEC is a document that specifies requirements for products, services and/or processes. It’s a trusted strategic instrument for quickly and easily establishing and disseminating innovative solutions that do not conflict with any existing standards or rules of procedure.

“The update to DIN SPEC 15800:2021 is a good example of how DIN SPECs can evolve and stay current with specifications that meet the needs of the market,” said Michael Bahr, project manager at DIN. “GDTF and DIN SPEC 15800:2021 are clearly succeeding in serving the needs of the entertainment industry. I'm happy that we could support this project and update this standard with the GDTF group. The updated DIN SPEC 15800:2021 will make the GDTF format easier to use and more scalable for the future. That's what DIN SPEC is made for: ‘Today’s idea. Tomorrow’s standard.’”

DIN officially published GDTF as a public available specification for the entertainment industry worldwide in June 2020. Since then, the original creators of the file format have been joined by manufacturers and users across the industry to ensure it remains the standard to truly benefit the end users. Open communication, addressing feedback and continuous improvement efforts have led to the latest version of the file format, GDTF 1.2. GDTF 1.2 includes several major changes that address prior criticisms of the standard and key enhancements.

    SVG and .gITF Support

GDTF 1.2 includes SVG support for defining 2D representation and .gITF support for defining 3D representation, allowing for better graphical rendering for GDTF objects. The additional support of these object types makes GDTF truly universal, not only targeting fixtures, but all kinds of objects that are used inside of an event.

    Non-Linear Behavior and SubPhysicalAttributes

The updated GDTF file format will provide support for non-linear behavior of channel functions inside GDTF with DMX Profiles and better descriptions of the physical behavior of channel functions with SubPhysicalAttributes. The non-linear behavior and SubPhysicalAttributes allow designers more precise rendering of F\fixture behaviors in rendering. In addition, channel functions that ramp, pulse or strobe can now be described more accurately.

    Non-DMX Based Control Protocols

GDTF 1.2 delivers support for non-DMX based control protocols like OSC. This support for OSC demonstrates the file format’s ability to not only support DMX, but also other formats, providing design and production professionals with more flexibility and control.

GDTF 1.2 also provides support for more object types like trusses, lasers, hoists and power distributors with new geometry types.

“A seemingly impossible task to allow standardized cross-manufacturer data exchange between devices in the lighting and entertainment industry has turned into a success story of industry-wide cooperation with the GDTF specification,” said Josef Valchar, CEO of Robe Lighting. “The continuous engagement of the GDTF group resulted in another GDTF update in the form of DIN SPEC 15800:2021, incorporating the feedback and work of many industry experts who contributed their expertise and time into a standard that allows their own products to utilize simpler yet more comprehensive workflows.”

“The GDTF group maintains a strong commitment to developing the format using open sources, while demonstrating responsiveness to critiques and requests to improve the formats,” said Gerhard Krude, managing director of MA Lighting Technology. “All in all, we emphasize that GDTF and MVR are made by the industry for the industry.”

To learn more about GDTF visit, gdtf-share.com, and if you are at LDI2021 stop by to attend the free learning sessions on GDTF. The updated DIN SPEC 15800:2021 will be published by Beuth Verlag sometime after LDI.

  12. Continuing its support for emerging designers, global design and BIM software provider Vectorworks, Inc. announces Leslie Majer as the Richard Diehl award winner for the fifth Vectorworks Design Scholarship. With over 1,800 submissions, scholarships were awarded to 28 students for 21 projects in the architecture, entertainment, landscape and interior design industries. Winners included both individual and group submissions.

The winning project titled “Badehaus Breitstrom” was submitted by Majer for her thesis studio project at Bauhaus Universität Weimar and focuses on bathhouses and urban facilities. The project includes a historical reference with a focus on contemporary design, construction methods and sustainability. Majer used Vectorworks for drawings and connected them to Maxon’s Cinema 4D to create renderings.

“Leslie Majer’s project is a true gem,” said Vectorworks Product Marketing Director Rubina Siddiqui. “It showcases very impressive work—not just in the graphics and the thoroughness or the detail, but also the space that is created through the juxtaposition of simple and heavy elements to create something so massive and intricate is quite an accomplishment. We congratulate Leslie and all this year’s winners for their creative achievements. We hope the scholarships aid these designers in continuing to elevate and progress the design industry with their contributions.”

“It’s an incredible honor to win this scholarship and to be recognized by a jury of experienced, diverse design professionals,” said Leslie Majer, now graduate architecture student at ETH; Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich. “In architecture school, we’re very much taught to learn and form our own stance on what’s important more so than the real parameters of construction or what our ideas will actually affect in the real world. It is an amazing feeling that the Vectorworks Design Scholarship gave the project and the topics it incorporates a bigger forum, which reaches beyond the discourse of my own university.”

This year’s winners represented countries from around the globe United States, Dominican Republic, Australia, England, Poland, Germany, Switzerland, Japan. Submissions were evaluated based on design quality, concept and originality, the effective use of computer technology, presentation and explanation of design.
