  1. Colud the "Workgroup references" function be moved into the organisation palette - along with Classes, Design layers, Sheet layers, Viewports and Saved Views, and also have the ability to perform all of the operations that are available form the workgroup references menu e.g. New, Edit, Remove etc...

It seem like the natural place for it to be now that VectorWorks seems to be moving away from menu commands and moving to icon/tool palettes.

  2. The practice I work for in the UK have just purchased the HP DesignJet 4000ps to replace 2 ageing HP DesignJet 750C +'s, and I have to tell you that it is a fantastic machine and my users love it.

It has good Mac drivers (built in with Tiger), is extremely quick printing/processing, near photo quality prints, has a fantastic built in web server for browser based job management, huge ink capacity, good paper capacity (90 meter rolls) and much more.

    I would highly recommend it!!!

  3. VectorWorks uses the absolute reference to a file. A better and more flexible method would be to use a relative path to a project folder, much like how web design software works.

Another way to get around the ip issue is setup local DNS and use the DNS name instead...

  4. I have more than 40 PowerMac G5's all with DVI so having a DVI ready display seems sensible. I know I can use the DVI to VGA adaptor but why go to the trouble.

The Apple displays are beautiful but I can't really justify spending ?549 per display. I'm looking to replace 20 x 21" CRT's with LCD displays so was looking for something a little more affordable. Samsung do a few 17 and 20" LCD's with DVI which are about half the price of the 20" Apple LCD.

  5. Does anybody have any recommendations for a decent LCD display that are suitable for CAD use.

We are Mac users looking for either a 17" or 19" LCD's to replace some old 21" CRT's. We are open to suggestion but DVI is a must!!!

    Thanks

  6. First off I would upgrade to Mac OS 9.2.2 and see if that improves anything. But I think you will struggle with limited ram and Mac OS 9.

Failing that I would seriously consider dropping OS 9 and move to Tiger. The biggest single problem on Mac OS 9 systems has always been memory allocation issues. Upgrade to tiger and all of the memory problems will simple go away (tiger has protected memory). I run a couple of similar spec G4's with Tiger and 512MB of memory and while it is not super quick it is has been very reliable.

  7. Wondered if anybody (Katie) could explain to me how VectorWorks 11 stores the link to a referenced file. Does it use the absolute path, the relative path (don't think so!) or does it keep track of references by the files inode?

    Thanks

  8. Yes I know you can do this but it defeats the purpose of the Mac OS X privilege model.

I run VW's 11 in a managed Mac OS X environment and don't want user to be able to remove parts of the VW's installation.

When the installer runs it should set the correct privileges on its files and folders. These should then allow a non-admin user to operate VW's but not modify or delete any part of the installation.

I think the installer is broke and needs to be updated.

  9. Thanks for the quick response Lyndsey,

Yes this is Mac OS X (10.3.8) on a dual PowerMac G5.

I do understand the permissions issue but I shouldn't need to set the folder privileges so that non-admin users can use VectorWorks. The installer should take care of it. Shouldn't it?

As I said I can set the privileges but my environment is a managed one and I don't wan't users going into the VectorWorks folders and removing things.

This must be a bug in the installer. 11.01 didn't exhibit this problem.

  10. I have 2 user accounts one my machine, 1 is an administration account and 1 is a normal user account (but has admin rights). When I install the VectorWorks 11.5 update the administrator can open and use the updated application without issue. When I log-in as the other user the application fails to launch. I have modified the VectorWorks 11 privileges and this takes me further but still reports an error:

"One of the VectorWorks external resource files ("VW Resources", "VW Locale, or "WV Help Resources") cannot be opened, so the application cannot continue."

I could log-in as the root user and change the app privileges so that I can use it. But I am running VW's in a network environment with 40 users and this isn't feasible.

There is something definately not right with the 11.5 update and needs fixing.

    Anybody else seen this? Katie?
