This didn't work for me, aa number of objects were found, but the custom modification palette that appears is unable to change the
attribute from screen to layer plane.
The quickest way I know is to use the Custom Modification command from the Tools Menu and set the selection criteria to Plane > Screen. Then change everything to Layer in the Object Properties box that appears.
You can make sure that it looks inside groups as well.....
You can also set the tool to create a script which will semi-automate the process after that.

@Pat Stanford thanks for the quick response, being a relatively seasoned user, that was the very first thing I checked, and it was indeed set to Show/Snap/Modify Others.

Hi All,
Recently, I've been having one of those vexing but all too common experiences.
i.e.: In a particular file, many elements (walls, windows etc) are not highlighting on hover and some others are.
Makes the file hard to work with.
I'm still in the process of solving this problem, but one of my first steps was to run the repair utility..
The result was "Found and repaired 347 files." OK, so I ran it again... same result.. "Found and repaired 347 files."
Since I have a very fast internet connection, I installed a fresh copy, the ran the repair utility on the brand new copy... same result.
I know that we're not supposed to put too much stock into the results of the repair utility.. but this seems strange..
Any comments, thoughts, similar experiences?
Is it possible that the install utility doesn't have permission to do the file modification that the repair requires?
blah, blah, blah...
Thanks.

this plugin works well... thanks to @The Hamma

Just a comment.. all this fiddling is really non-mac like. I can only speak for myself, as I do have decent technical abilities.
Downloading an installer, and keeping the incremental updates, can be very helpful for customizing an installation to deal with
bugs that inevitably occur on either the OS side or the VW side. ex> Maybe I'd want to do an installation of VW on a new machine
that would be then updated to something less than the most recent version.. the new system makes this type of thing more of a pain.

Thanks @Tim Ardoin, very easy solution.

Question still remains.. is there a .dmg available to download?
I do have some (limited) command line abilities, but would like to download a dmg for easy re-installs if necessary later.

I assume that layer and class visibility cannot be changed in the viewer.. can anyone weigh in to confirm?

Hi All, Just checking in to see if anyone is using the Sequoia Beta as their daily driver.. and if so, which one..
Public, Developer, 15.1 with Apple Intelligence?.. curious about VW usability, stability etc.
-
I'm getting serious lags on 14.6, on a very simple residential remodel file where I'm testing some different roof intersections. Simple geometry.
-
In my experience.. VW has been stable on (developer beta 4) (by my fairly limited testing) with a medium size file consisting of a residential remodel
including a site model, and a number of worksheets..
HOWEVER.. Sequoia itself kernel panics on sleep, forcing a restart.. so it's not usable for me yet.

FYI, I've had the same experience, certain surfaces that should render as white, render as black.. I'll let the forum know if I come up with a solution or contact support.

@Tom W. is correct... Vectorworks MUST be closed in order to run the repair function.
-
Just FYI, the update installer is a separate program in the same folder as VW.
That app "Vectorworks 2024 Updater" also has a repair function which you could try running before updating.
The repair function is under "advanced options".

curious.. are you moving to a different CAD/BIM package?

I recently used graphic legends developing a kitchen project... worked very well for what I was looking for, the layout took a bit of fiddling
and it's hard to eliminate unnecessary white space as seen below the vertical size of each cell is keyed to the cabinet that's' tallest...
and the layout for the others isn't ideal. Does anyone know a workaround?

@dtheory looking through your website you'll probably be happiest heading into twinmotion/lumion/enscape. They are all fast gpu style renderers and pretty easy to get used to. I would think the complexity of C4D or some other 3d modeling program+renderer will be too overwhelming for what you produce.
Thanks for the feedback, I was a user of C4D in the past, and yes, it's really not justifiable for what I'm doing now. I'm currently exploring TwinMotion.

Pardon me if this has been covered.. seems like the subject is in flux.
Anyone want to chime in with recommendations for a supplemental renderer for VW Designer.. anything from free on upward..
I'm a solo operation, so probably biased toward low cost and speedy renders.. (pick two.. cheap good or fast!).
Thanks all..

I'm familiar with Interiorcad.. I've been an owner, but can't really justify the purchase since they've raised prices.. I do design build, and cabinets are a part of what I do, but not the main thing, hence the need for estimating..

Thanks for the input and sample files, some good stuff to try, though, by way of a comment, seems like area of doors and drawer fronts, in categories by material would be a good ones to be available in the basic built-in criteria..

Hi All,
Is anyone aware of a worksheet criteria that would allow the extraction of square footage (or square inches, whatever) of cabinet doors and/or drawer fronts?
I can ballpark this with cabinet width and height, however, on this project, I have a significant number of "two sided" cabinets, and it would be convenient to extract the
square footage of those parts for estimating purposes, also possibly extract numbers for different door materials such as solid slab, shaker, or glassfront..
Thanks!

M1 Mac Studio. Not run into any major issues, there have been a couple of graphic glitches that resolve by restarting VW.

Repair utility mystery
in Troubleshooting
Posted
Hi Michael,
Yes, I found that to be true. The file was originally started for a project in 2015 that I'm revisiting.. it's been opened and updated several times, which I think
has caused some anomalies in addition to the differences in wall display in 2026.. def. a bit of a pain to go through the entire file for such things as screen plane items, wall cut planes, old door objects and it goes on and on. etc etc etc
