I have turned everything to stop auto switching graphics and use the 3090 only, and all drivers are up to date.
Its odd, i've never had these kind of issues even with much lower spec'd computers. I guess i'll just keep fiddling. Hopefully i'll find some fix somewhere in the fine print.

I'm at a bit of a loss here. My computer ran pretty good but was getting dated so I upgraded my CPU, motherboard, ram, the whole shooting match. After putting it back together and starting fresh on a new high end M.2 as a boot drive and vectorworks drive only it runs awful for vectorworks. It has no problem with any of the rendering engines or video editing software I use, but vectorworks chokes a pretty well spec'd computer up on wireframe and openGL renders all of a sudden. I've been using vectorworks for years and never experienced this even while using a laptop so its a little bizarre to me.
Specs:
i9-13900k
64 gig's 6400mhz ddr5 ram
rtx3090
sabrent rocket m.2
Any help on getting it to be a little better optimized would be very much appreciated. I can't even move around a set of chairs without it crashing repeatedly on a current project. About to dust off the old ryzen 3900 and put it back in. TIA

I was sent a few 2022 files but I only have VW2021. Is there any method to open it or is the only option to upgrade or have the original file creator save it as an older file?

I have been a vectorworks user for quite a few years now and haven't really ever run into an issue where in a fairly basic lighting design just a simple shift-ctrl-drag duplication will instantly nuke the application. So far its only happened to me on JDC line 500's but its basically taken this job to a halt because I can't finish the design without it crashing over and over again.
Just wondering if its the fixture, or if its corrupted somehow. Every time I place this fixture it crashes instantly. Very bizarre.
Any help would be rad. TIA

In the interest of sticking with windows i gave the Lenovo a shot. It was hot garbage so i returned it and my mbp will be here today.
I went with a Max’d out p73 and it thermal throttled all cores down to 500 mhz under base clock at full load despite the package temp only being 65*C.
lesson learned. Thanks for the help guys!

Interesting takes.
At the moment I only use Vectorworks so other than that it will just be a general use laptop. I had always heard amazing things about the quadro cards but mostly in reference to friends that do editing. So perhaps I’m off base. And after looking at the fine bench scores for that particular Xeon vs the i9 counterpart it doesn’t seem to be a huge notable difference in multi threaded performance.
I saw that Lenovo carries isv certifications for vectorworks though so I wasn’t sure if that meant seeing there is very little information past just stating it exists. I’ve been leaning Mac just because in 95% of the videos and tutorials and stuff I watched when I was learning the software originally and nearly every webcast that’s done the people use Mac. Not to mention there are people that say they use the same MacBooks for years and years.
i appreciate the feedback. I’m just conflicted. Might be time to take a leap.
As you said, that Macbook is what you would do. That said how do you think these do in the heat department? Unless the fans on this razer are cranked all the way up the cpu is always boiling regardless of work load. They are built fairly similar so I’m worried that noise will always be cranking in my ear.

Ladies and Gentleman,
I've been getting infinitely frustrated with my current mobile Vectorworks solution so its time to upgrade. I have pretty much always been a windows guy but not opposed to a Macbook at all. There is a lot of conflict on optimization, ease of use, etc that I've considered over and over and cannot make a decision. For the amount of money each of these computers are I would really like to potentially future proof as much as possible as well. I can consult the equipment list that Vectorworks has published but I would really like some first hand info from people who have used similar equipment.
I have a well spec'd desktop computer that I do a lot of the work on, but I need something that won't turn its nose up at me if I need to render a file while I am away from my desk. I'm aware that laptop solutions will always take longer, and stay hotter, but i'd just like it to do this with the fewest amounts of crashes in between attempts. My current situation has it auto saving after each action. Current computer is a Razer Blade 15" i7 8750H, 16GB Ram, RTX 2060 6GB. Thermals throttling is absolutely horrible and it crashes constantly, tried it all.
I appreciate any help in advance thank you guys!

You just need to get the vectorworks vision dongle. Not a dongle from grandMA. They are like 45 bucks from vectorworks. It’s only for the vision software so if you ever switch computers you just need to make sure you bring the dongle with you.

When I spoke to the guys at vectorworks they said you for sure need to use a dongle in order to get around that hasp error. I ended up getting a dongle anyway, but if you aren’t committed to the MAonPC You could use some other artnet virtual console ie. obsidian onyx or magic q etc.

I just ended up using magicQ instead but easier to use for my purposes and has a pretty good visualizer too boot.

Hey guys,
I was just wondering if this was a thing that happens only in perspective and cannot be fixed. In ortho view the video preview is crisp and clear and in perspective its jumbled with 90% static.
Is there any way to remedy this so I can render a movie in a normal perspective with the video looking like this? Not a huge deal, but if I can fix it i'd like to.

This may sound like amateur hour, because it is exactly that. I am entirely self taught with all of this. I have looked everywhere and done all the research I can handle.
When using MAonPC do you need to have a dongle? When I go to select the DMX provider, or rather once the file is exported into Vision I get a HASP error. I really wish that when I spoke to the team about all of this prior to purchase they mentioned that without a console you can't really do anything in Vision. I purchased this mostly to put video on the LED screens to display my customers content with the rest of the stage elements, but also wanted to be able to have just a few basic lights to boot.
I'm happy to do more reading if someone could just point me in the right direction. Links to things that Jim have posted aren't going to help because i've read them top to bottom and still can't seem to find the answer i'm looking for.

I have a pretty stout computer that I use to do my drafting. It seems like no matter what I do if I open more than one relatively simple drawing it immediately crashes. Every crash happens with no error message or anything to let me know why. I keep all software and hardware fully up to date.
When I get into more complex technical line drawings my computer also just cannot process them and vectorworks just freezes completely and won't shut off until I reboot.
Hope to get this figured out because in the middle of a big tour design I'm a little sick of praying that auto save is doing its job when everything shuts off. If I need a different processor, graphics card, memory, mouse, chair, anything i'll get it.

I thought maybe this could be a contributing factor since they just came out with the 40 series cards they have been cranking out driver updates left and right they are bound to screw something up.
I'll revert a few versions to something more stable and give that a shot.
