Hi, I have a grading plan from a consultant which is all 3D polyine contours. What I have to do is clip out the grading of the site exterior from the site interior. All that i have is a 2D polyline which represents that boundary. Is there a way to clip out the 3D polyline contours with a 2D object? Is there a simple way to transform that object into something useful? Edit: I guess the easiest thing would be if I could clip non coplanar 3D poly's. I want my 2D poly boundary to be able to clip the contours above it. I've tried to extrude the poly and clip or subtract surfaces without any luck. Edit 2: The attached screenshot shows a corner where the teal boundary is the line I'd like to use to clip the 3D poly contours. There are thousands of contours with some crossing the teal boundary many times so I'm looking for the least "manual" way to do this as I can.

Hi, we recently started having to collaborate with clients using BIM and we're trying to find the best file type to do this. We have a large (5km long) grading plan from a client which is just composed of 3D polylines. I made some alterations to the file and exported it as a .dwg which went flawlessly. I also exported the file as IFC and I got a prompt that only "3 objects with IFC data were exported". All I can think of is that these would be the three stake objects that I placed on the plan, but I cannot see them or any of the 3D contours from before when I open up the exported IFC file in Vectorworks. Is there something I'm doing wrong - i want the IFC file to also show all of the 3D polylines for grading. Am I going about using IFC files incorrectly? Edit: When I import my exported IFC file back into a blank Vectorworks file, nothing comes in. I turn on all classes, layers, visibilities, etc. When I zoom to extents, I'm still just centered on the page looking at nothing.

Does anyone have a good tutorial on how to pull data from our titleblocks to create a sheet index? The sheet list help page in VW2020 is not helpful, I'm not seeing the drop downs or buttons for options it lists. We ahve all of our titleblocks as Title Block Boarders with linked sheet data - that's the data I want to pull from.

Both shadows and ambient occlusion are already turned off. It's not a cast shadow, it's a darkness that is applied to sloping or curving faces. Not sure where I turn this fun "feature" off...

Hi, I'm trying to figure out which rendering settings would best fit this bench detail and I'm not having much luck. Attached is a screenshot of the detail with OpenGL and outside lines drawn in the sheet layer viewport rendering. I'm using orthogonal views of my 3D modeled bench. I'd like it to look like a standard construction document elevation but as you can see circled in red, it adds in shading at my curved objects and angled vertical faces. Is there a setting to turn this off so everything is just white and outlined in black? When I use the Hidden Line render mode, my curved arm rests look like spider webs with all of the lines printing that make up the "smooth curve".

Hi all, Having recently downloaded VW 2020, I'm having trouble getting our workgroup folder to link up like we had it in VW 2019. It seems that the whole workgroup file structure has changed a little between VW 2019 - should I be linking to a different path than I did in VW 2019?

I'm looking to try dark mode myself - where do you change over to this setting? Edit: It appears that this is only an option for Mac users. Hopefully by the time Windows gets it, the kinks will be worked out.

I've been out of using AutoCAD for about a year but i still really miss the non-plot functionality! It was great for having things visible for you the drafter and not having to worry about turning things off when you go to publish.

Yes, in the OPI it says that the symbols are page based units. What is the difference and when would I use each type? Did I choose page based instead of world based without knowing it while setting up the symbol?

I'm stumped here but this is probably an easy fix where I just have to tick a box like usual... I have some paver symbols that are in my design layer which is at 1/8"=1'-0". When I make a sheet layer viewport of them at a viewport scale of 1/8"=1'-0", the symbols look correct. When I increase the viewport scale to 1"=1'-0", the symbols stay the same size as they were in a 1/8"=1'-0" viewport, essentially appearing 4x too small in my 1"=1'-0" viewport. How do I remedy this??

I'm trying to make the lines on my callouts thicker in my document so I changed the thickness under "Leader Attributes" in the OIP. It only increased the lineweight of the leader, not the shoulder lineweight as well (why would you ever beef up one but not the other...?). How do i beef up the shoulder line as well? Also, can i turn these callout attributes into a style or something like that which will update across my entire file? If it matters, these callouts were placed in a Sheet Layer Viewport Annotation.

BUMP. Has this been taken care of yet? It would be pretty darn helpful for a lot of my work, especially coming from CAD which has this functionality.

Ok, I'm really new to a lot of the terminology that you just used. What is your typical workflow for bringing in survey info and using it for a site model? Are site models part of your typical workflow when you get grading info? Thanks for taking the time to reply!!

Hey everyone, I'm curious what your workflow looks like for generating a base file from civil data. I've tried creating site models with some .dwg's that I've got, but the contours have no Z value and it's a PITA manually assigning Z values and manually closing so many contour lines. I'm wondering what the fastest and most efficient workflow is that you guys have developed and if it differs based on how big the site is (seeing that maybe it would slow down my computer). Often the majority of the grading for a project site is already done by a civil in a program like Civil 3D and there is a lot of data/metadata in those civil files. Instead of dumbing it down to .dwg, do any of you ask to recieve survey data as a .txt file? It seems that civil flies might be able to be exported as point files and it looks a lot easier to create a large site model using a survey .txt file. Would you have to have a separate survey .txt file for existing and proposed grading and then create two site models? Is there another file type that you prefer or anything that allows you to easily update or recreate site models as the grading changes throughout the project? Thanks!

Hi guys, I've created a custom formatted worksheet for our plant schedules that is just in a .vwx file on my desktop. I want everyone in my office to be able to have access to it via ourVW Workgroup. Is there a way for me to export just the worksheet into the Workgroup or do I maybe have to save the file it's in as a .sta template and access the worksheet in the Resource Manager form there? Any help is appreciated 🙂 Thanks!

Bumping this post - has this been added in 2019 yet? I'm trying to turn off the visibility of layers with the Visibility tool. I have 3 .dwg's directly imported into a .vwx file that is then viewported into another .vwx file. -Thanks

Hi there, I'm running VW Landmark 2019 and I'm wondering how you guys go about 2D planting plans? Working in the landscape architecture profession, our 2D plan sets are B&W and plants are generally easily distinguishable symbols. Using the Plant tool in Landmark, I am able to lay down certain plant species, but all of them are relatively artistic with colored fills. When I turn off the color fills, only the outer border remains and the plants are barely distinguishable (see attached photos). How do you all go about having distinguishable 2D plant symbols? Do you have to amend the pre-loaded Vectorworks ones? Thanks!

I'm a new user trying to change the linewieght of my plant tags. I don't see the "Create Plug-In" command but I do see a "Plug-In Manager". Should I be going through here? I'm using VW 2019 Landmark.
